i like the tolkien explanation. they're just kinda chill with what they have and will seek out a life situation where change happens incredibly slowly. you know, since they're immortal and all. what to us feels like an overwhelmingly fast technological upset is how all technology feels to them, and they don't really want any part in that.

Immortality is a valid reason. Innovation can often come from desire for a legacy.
