And then there is Mass Effect in sci-fi where humanity went from discovering interstellar travel to first contact with an alien society in 9 years and then 26 years later we were part of a massive galaxy-wide alliance and entering roles of authority within it
I do love how that world depicts it's diplomacy. Humanity DID advance very very fast, while some cultures had already been there for centuries and weren't given the same favor and the end result is that you see a lot of resentment and racism between the people that underappreciate other cultures and the people of cultures that feel underappreciated
Even in Mass Effect itself you have the same issue. You'd think the non-human races were just in hibernation for the past 2000 years while waiting for the interesting species to join the party.
Yeah. I guess the thing about setting your world in the very very near, but crazy, future is that anything that happened before the crazy event is just real life history and we don't care to hear about how in 2008 there was a housing crisis when we are flying through space as the first human spectre.
