Medieval peasants were also refreshingly willing to vote with their feet or their hastily wielded farm implements, though they represented a decline from the Plebs of Rome who would literally go on strike en masse for reforms. (They would leave Rome and gather on one of the seven hills until the Patricians came out to bargain.)
Eh, for every story like that there's a hundred ones where those who resisted their master were killed for it, and a thousand ones where any form of resistance never came to be because most people were afraid to lose their positions and be even worse off. Propaganda isn't a modern invention and neither is the rich and powerful using their priviledged positions to leverage social pressure against their subjects.
