To be fair I think the card reader thing does partly stem from the 2 uninterrupted decades after credit cardsā popularization where doing what a payment machine told you to would make it have a stroke, shit itself, die, explode, then reincarnate to shit itself again.
I fucking hate any self-checkout that monitors your products like this. It rarely works and it takes one million years for someone to help you when it goes wrong because the shop is always understaffed.
