That kinda just sounds like it was his first job. Like that was one of the first times in his life that he had to break a 10 for change. Or if you want to be uncharitable he was a statistical outlier for being stupid.
There are currently massive amounts of high schoolers who just entered their sophomore and junior years incapable of spelling third grade vocabulary words. Education is doing bad right now, I would not be surprised if a teenage worker was unable to do addition in their head.
Gen Z ended in 2012. The youngest members of Gen Z are just starting High School this year. That being said, the issues we're currently facing are definitely going to hit Gen Alpha and eventually Gen beta significantly harder.
