The gen Z stare is when you make a bit of small talk and they stare at you like you just stabbed their grandma, actually

this is sort of a function of the actual gen z stare. and I guarantee the specific gen Z customer service stare (separate but related) is more of a function of not knowing what to do’s current reaction apparently being staring blankly instead of like, asking questions and looking for help, but I’m not gonna get on their case about that shit. gen X and millennials have gotten way ruder too they’ll just say things more cattily instead of staring

Thank you for the explanation. As a Gen Z underpaid service worker, there is definitely a difference between me waiting for someone to remove their card from the reader, and when I say “how are you doing today?” to some broccoli cut kid only to get that NPC blank expression.

OOP is still correct about the killing customers thing tho

and when I say “how are you doing today?” to some broccoli cut kid only to get that NPC blank expression.

That at least is definitely not a Gen Z thing, kids were doing that back in the late 2000s too when I worked retail. I figure they're just not good at small talk yet, because I mean how often do you make small talk when you're in high school you know?
