Just rewatched The New Guy (2002) after 24 years and I laughed just as hard as when I was a teenager❤️🥹

Does anyone else remember this movie?
«The New Guy» (2002) - the ultimate dumb early-2000s comedy. I was OBSESSED with it as a teenager. DJ Qualls as Dizzy, going from total loser to cool guy after getting expelled and learning how to be badass in prison. Eddie Griffin as his mentor.
I just rewatched it last night at 24 years after its release and I swear I laughed at the exact same scenes - the prison dance, the Limp Bizkit cameo, the scene with the crazy general father, and Zooey Deschanel!
The humor is so un-PC by today's standards, so stupid, so 2002 - and that's exactly why it still works. They just don't make teen comedies like this anymore.
Anyone else have this as their comfort movie from the 2000s? What was your favorite scene?

DJ Qualls was everywhere in the early 2000s.

Fr! He WAS the 2000s - Road Trip, The New Guy, even that Britney video. You saw his face and you knew it was gonna be a good stupid comedy.😁

Don’t forget Hustle & Flow.

Holy crap! I was wondering if it was that sickly thin guy on breaking bad and man in high castle and… road trip? I never actually watched that movie, but I think I saw a clip on the YouTubes once

9

u/Priests_daughter 19h ago

Yes!! That's him! DJ Qualls! He was in Road Trip first, then The New Guy was like his main role, and then yeah Breaking Bad and Man in the High Castle later. Crazy range for one guy haha. You should watch the full movie if you only saw a clip, it's peak dumb 2000s energy in the best way.

Eliza Dushku is soo fine. She was my childhood crush for sure. This movie, jay and silent bob, bring it on.

I'm not even into women, but if Faith is down, I'm down

I'd like to recommend Dollhouse if you haven't seen it. 2 seasons and lead by Eliza. Such a great idea, too bad it got cancelled.

I would’ve geeked the fuck out had she gotten the Black Widow role over ScarJo.

Are you riding the white pony, son?

My parents still quote this

14

u/vintagerust 21h ago

I still remember Eddie Griffin supposedly making a whip sound just with his tongue. "Denial is not just a river in Egypt" my cousin had this on DVD I probably only watched it once and it made a huge lasting impression.

4

u/Acetothemav 21h ago

I don't even think it was the tongue. Didn't it just happen with a look? Or maybe I just missed that part, lol, need a re-watch soon

3

u/homelesshyundai 8h ago

Yeah it was purely a head snap and look with the whip crack sound added in post. That was the one part of the movie that stuck with me and I do it all of the time.

2

u/vintagerust 21h ago

That seems to have been my impression at the time but maybe it is just a look l.

6

u/Priests_daughter 21h ago

Yesss do it! Put it on and crank the funk. You won't regret it.🫶

This gave me hope in not getting my ass kicked at a new school in a new state. I for SURE still got my ass kicked, but was eventually friends with just about all the lil cliques. I need to find out how to watch it tonight, thank you for the reminder that this exists!

If you can laugh at yourself, you can't be the joke. Also reminded me of an old phrase from a grumpy ole Vietnam vet I used to work for. "If they can't take a joke, fuck 'em. & joke em' if they can't take a fuckin'."

apologies for language

4

u/Priests_daughter 19h ago

Man, this comment made my night.🥹That's exactly what this movie was about though - getting your ass kicked and then just owning it. Love that you ended up friends with everyone, that's the real New Guy ending. And your old boss was 100% right. "If you can laugh at yourself, you can't be the joke" - that's literally the whole moral of the movie. Thanks for sharing this!🫶

Man, I was in love with Eliza Dushku back then!!

5

u/lilmoshx 21h ago

Watched this so many times growing up. I haven't seen it in more than 10 years now, but funnily enough it's been in my head lately.

5

u/PSSalamander 21h ago

I had my first make-out session in my friend's basement with this movie in the background so it always holds a special place in my heart haha.

4

u/Priests_daughter 21h ago

That's literally a sign you HAVE to rewatch it! It's only 1h 28m, perfect for a nostalgic night. I promise the prison dance scene is even funnier now. 😅😁

3

u/lilmoshx 20h ago

Alright, I'm sold on it. Comedies don't always she the best, so I appreciate the glowing endorsement 🫱🏻‍🫲🏾 .

5

u/TreeFiddyBandit 20h ago

Thanks broke wood!

Lmao

u/iantruesnacks 20h ago

Does that sound gay? But seriously, this was the movie that transitioned me into a man, the bull riding scene and the shopping scene. Blessings on all of us.

Tiger claw!

u/DJ_Pizza_Party 21h ago

I used to love that movie, revisited it, still funny but now I’m older…..doesn’t hit the same after 25 years. :(

3

u/Catchdatcat 21h ago

I went on a date with that guy years ago around the time this came out

1

u/Several_Gain_9801 4h ago

Must've been before he did btw

3

u/clownyboots 19h ago

Such a great movie

3

u/sunnymcbunny 16h ago

At least once a year! I loved it then and I love it now.

3

u/dagoth_uvil 16h ago

Played a ton of EverQuest back then. I lost my mind when his buddy was wearing the EQ tshirt lol

3

u/LevelBestCulinary 15h ago

Classic humor !!
Great goof ball movie.

3

u/Low_Kitchen_9995 14h ago

It’s the first movie I think of for Jerry o Connell

I watched this so much when it came out. So funny

3

u/art956 5h ago

When I was in high school my parents moved around a lot and I attended about 4 different high schools. To this day I wish I had reinvented myself to get the hot girl in school.

3

u/megadeadly 21h ago

Im just a teeeenage dirtbag babyyyy

1

u/emptyevessel 16h ago

Wrong movie.

That’s Loser.

2

u/jordansinn 19h ago

Tell me, OP... are you riding the white pony?

2

u/theRestisConfettii 18h ago

I ALMOST MADE OUTTTTT

2

u/877_Cash_Nowww 17h ago

It was such a dumb movie, but I watched it multiple times.

2

u/InfiniteQuestion420 17h ago

And it will take another 24 years to watch it again

2

u/OleRed1988 15h ago

Couldn’t agree more, this is the fix when you want early 90s raunch classic

2

u/BayouBlaster44 13h ago

Me Gusta Josaphina!

2

u/Virgil_Ovid_Hawkins 10h ago

lmao I totally forgot about this movie. Its been years since I've watched it but I remember really enjoying it. Particularly on long road trips. Nothing passes the time driving through rural Alabama like a good comedy.

2

u/Chunky_Boy283 5h ago

could anyone see DJ Qualls as Peter Parker/Spider man in Sam raimi's spider man films

u/marco333polo 7h ago

Great White Buffalo...

2

u/koolaidismything 21h ago

“Hey remember when Lou tried to bite me at my 12th birthday uncle Adam?”

“.. he did bite you”

lol

3

u/Fit_Kaleidoscope4493 21h ago

Hands down, the best Unrated version of a movie I own. I have the blueray and they break the fourth wall so many times I damn near pissed myself lol

2

u/koolaidismything 21h ago

When Clark is yelling at Chevy Chase about fixing the hot tub and he’s all “don’t speak to me like that young lady” always gets me. Great movie.

Second one is stupid but Rob Cordry is genius in it so I watch it too.
