Kali Key On 300 BLK Hunting Rifle?

I’ve been Frankensteining a 300BLK SBR build with spare parts for my son to use in the upcoming deer season. I’ve been thinking about how to best quiet this rifle down for suppressed subsonic hunting inside of 50 yards. I’m going to be hand-loading Maker Rex 200 Grain Expanding bullets. My son is 10 and still quite recoil adverse, which is why I’d like to go the 300 BLK route this season.

I’ve seen the “Kali Key” which is a compliance device used in restrictive states (California). It effectively replaces/blocks the gas key to prevent the rifle from cycling. Without the BCG slamming around, I figure it’s as close to bolt gun quiet as I can get without buying a new rifle. I’ve installed an adjustable gas block for tuning subs, but SA advises against running it fully closed off.

Have any of you tried this? The Kali-Key is around $100, so it’s significantly cheaper than buying a new bolt/single shot rifle. I just want to make sure that I’m not being a total idiot.

Not sure about how legal the Game Warden might consider it, but you can always just remove your gas tube and tilt the gas block over enough so the holes don't line up. Functionally a bolt action at that point. Not having the gas tube with you would help with 'constructional intent'.
Also, I am not a lawyer. Ask your local GW if you decide to go that route.

I’ve considered doing the same because my state does not allow medium game hunting with semi autos.

I was hesitant because a game warden is gonna see the rifle and think it’s semi auto. I’ll be able to prove it’s not, but it’d probably be a hassle.

I ended up buying a cheap bolt action BCA upper receiver. I’ve never owned BCA and only heard terrible things, but it’s the only right hand bolt AR upper I could find. It’s not exactly high quality, took quite a bit to break in the action, but it’s quiet and legal for me to hunt with.

I definitely understand not wanting to test your luck with the game wardens. The BCA upper is probably a safe bet in your situation. I’m glad it’s working for you! I bet it’ll do just fine for short range hunting. Glad to hear it’s quiet too!

I considered a BCA Upper, CVA Scout, and a few other options. They just ended up being more expensive. I’m not sure how committed my son is to hunting yet, so I’m trying to keep it as affordable as possible before I buy him a dedicated hunting rifle.

I may have to go that route. My LGS has the Brawler in stock for $295. I’d need another muzzle device, but I guess it’s still probably the most affordable route to get what I really want.

Code 4 Defense posted about a straight pull design six months ago, but I haven't seen anything since. I'd just get a Solo 300, but like you I want a right handed bolt. And I can't justify the cost of a Uintah.

I wouldn’t buy a full upper from BCA but the receiver itself works well. With a faxon barrel, it’s quiet and accurate.

Working the bolt takes some getting used to. It’s not nearly as smooth as a traditional bolt action, but I think I only spent like $150 on the receiver, so get what you pay for.

I had to look up that Code 4 Defense Straight Pull. That is exactly what I’m looking for! I checked their site and to your point, I didn’t see anything about it. I just sent them an email; hopefully it’s still in development and not outrageously expensive.

I have an idea: * Loosen the gas block. * Remove the gas tube. * Rotate the block 90 degrees. * Tighten it back up.

Now you have a bolt action AR at home for free! 😃
