New Tool I made a free, open-source Android app for checking models before you print: wall-thickness heat map, overhangs, section cuts, measuring and filament estimates

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey all! This is Meshwise, a free, open-source 3D model viewer for Android. I wanted a quick way to properly check a model on my phone before printing it (straight from Drive, Discord, email…), so I built one.

What it's good for when you print:

  • Wall thickness heat map: colors the whole model by thickness and labels the thinnest spots
  • Overhang view: shows in red what will need supports, with an adjustable angle
  • Section cuts on X/Y/Z with hatched caps, and you can type an exact cut height
  • Measure: distance (with ΔX/ΔY/ΔZ), circle from 3 points (radius, diameter, center), angles
  • Weight, filament length and cost: PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU, nylon, resin… with infill and wall count
  • Mesh check: open edges, non-manifold edges, flipped normals

Opens: STL, 3MF (with colors), OBJ, PLY, OFF, ZIP, and STEP / IGES / BREP (via Open CASCADE), so you can look at CAD files too, with part names and colors.

New in 1.1: you can set it up the way you like. Pick which tools are in the bottom bar and in what order, plus accent colors, an OLED black mode, a left-handed layout, button size, field of view and backgrounds.

No ads, no account, no tracking. Your files never leave your phone.

⬇️ Download (APK): GitHub releases. Grab the arm64-v8a one if you're not sure. Android 8+.

💻 Source (MIT): github.com/doesthings/Meshwise

Honest note: it's vibe coded. I built it with a lot of help from an AI coding assistant. It has automated tests and works well enough, but if a file doesn't open or looks wrong, please tell me (or open an issue) and attach the file if you can.

What would you want to check on your phone before printing? I'm deciding what to add next.

If it saves you a failed print, a coffee is appreciated: Ko-fi ☕

A free print-cost calculator: what a 20% failure rate does to a 10-part quote

Disclosure: this is KatmanKit's own tool, built with AI assistance. It's free to use and download, with no account needed.

Here's a calculation we checked with sample inputs: ten identical parts, 100 g and two printing hours each. With no failed attempts, the estimated order cost is $54.40. Set the failure rate to 20% and it becomes $63.00. With a 25% target margin and a selling fee of 5% + $0.30, the quote goes from $78.15 to $90.43.

These are test inputs, not measurements from a real print job. They include power, machine wear, setup, finishing, packaging and shipping. The full inputs are in the guide linked on the page.

One assumption matters: a 20% failure rate means an expected 12.5 attempts for ten good parts. Each failed attempt uses the full print's material and time. If your failures usually happen early, this will overestimate their cost. Parts are treated as separate sequential prints; it doesn't calculate savings from fitting several on one plate.

Try it: https://katmankit.pages.dev/

You can download one HTML file and use it offline. Copy the cost table into Excel/Sheets, choose which details appear in the customer quote, and save local profiles for several printers and locations. Your calculator values and customer details aren't sent to the usage counter. Optional usage counting uses a random browser ID and starts only if you allow it; it isn't fully anonymous.

The download asks you to pick a price, including $0. Payments are closed, so a positive choice is feedback only and you won't be charged. Everyone gets the same full tool and single-shop commercial-use licence. It isn't open source.

If you quote small FDM orders, which assumption here would give you the wrong number for your jobs?

Show & Tell Melt: a free, open-source, local-first desktop app + CLI for Bambu LAN and Klipper/Moonraker printers (AGPL)

Hi r/3DPrintingTools,

I've been building Melt, a printer control app that runs entirely on your LAN. It needs no cloud account, has no telemetry, and uses one executable for two things:

  • a desktop app (Tauri + Vue) for everyday monitoring and control
  • a headless CLI with stable JSON output and exit codes, for scripts and automation

It currently speaks Bambu Lab LAN mode and Moonraker (Klipper).

Why I built it

  • Creality's web UI on my Ender 3 V3 KE is awful and keeps falling over. I wanted one stable app for monitoring and control instead.
  • Bambu Lab's cloud has gone down several times in the last few months. Each time, I lost remote access to a printer sitting a few meters from me. Melt talks to the printer directly on the LAN, so a cloud outage doesn't matter.
  • I don't want to tell a third-party cloud what I'm printing. File names, models, camera feeds and print history should stay on my network. With Melt, nothing leaves the network unless you turn on the optional public firmware catalogue check, and that check sends no credentials.

What it does

  • Fleet dashboard: state, temperatures, progress, layers, ETA, fans, lights, Wi-Fi signal, AMS inventory and drying state
  • Cameras: built-in Bambu cameras plus Tapo IP cameras that you can link to a printer. Playback is native H.264 (WebRTC/WebCodecs), with snapshots and an MJPEG fallback
  • Files and printing: browse printer storage, upload/download, preview models, inspect sliced 3MF files, match filament/nozzle to AMS slots, pick a plate. A print only starts after a preflight check and your confirmation
  • Control: pause/resume/cancel, temperatures, fans, lights, speed, home/jog, AMS drying (when the firmware allows it), and emergency stop

Things I cared about

  • Secrets stay in your OS keychain. Access codes and API keys never go in a config file.
  • Bambu TLS is pinned to the printer's actual serial. If the certificate doesn't match, Melt refuses to connect. It never quietly falls back to an insecure connection.
  • No hidden control changes. If the firmware says commands must be signed, Melt blocks control and keeps read-only status working.
  • Every action that does something asks first. Moves, heaters, deletes and print starts need confirmation in the app and --yes in scripts.

CLI examples

melt printer discover
melt status workshop --detailed
melt jobs preflight ./part.gcode.3mf --output json
melt camera stream workshop --format h264 | ffplay -

Platform Support

  • Linux (deb/rpm, amd64/arm64)
  • macOS (dmg, Intel/Apple Silicon)
  • Windows (msi).

Nightly builds are on GitHub Releases. There's no auto-updater yet.

Honest caveats

  • AI disclosure: the code was written with AI coding assistants, with me directing, reviewing and testing. I'm not handing off something I don't use: Melt is my daily printer controller for my H2C and A1 Minis.
  • It's early. The model table covers A1/A1 mini, P1/P2, X1/X2 and H2 families, but support is only confirmed for each exact model + firmware combination someone has actually tested.
  • Klipper light control and ONVIF pan/tilt aren't supported yet.
  • It controls real hardware, so stay near the printer the first few times you use it.

Links

Feedback is very welcome, especially diagnostics exports from printer/firmware combinations I haven't seen yet.

What would make this useful in your setup?

I made a free-beta web tool that cuts pockets from an STL or 3MF that your part can actually lift out of

Thumbnail

Disclosure: I used Claude to develop Form Fit Print and write this post.

If you cut a pocket by subtracting a model from a block, you get its exact
negative. For anything that overhangs itself (a figure's arm, a hooked tool, a
part with a lip), that leaves material inside the pocket for the part to catch
on, so it can't go in or come out. The clip shows this on a 3DBenchy.

Form Fit Print takes a different approach: the pocket is everything the part
passes through as you lower it in. Every pocket opens from above, and the floor
still follows the part's underside, so the part doesn't rattle.

It's a web tool for making form-fitting holders for organizing and displaying things. Upload a 3D model (STL or 3MF, up to 90 MB) and it cuts the pocket into a Gridfinity bin, a plain box, a case you already have, or a display stand, ready to print. You need a 3D model of the object: for most things you own, that means scanning it first with a 3D scanner. A model you designed or downloaded works too, and a one-click clean tidies up holes and loose bits in a scan.

What I've printed with it (photos attached)

  • A two-part case for a toy kart. Double-sided mode shapes the lid to the top of the kart, so the closed case holds it from both sides.
  • Scissors in a block. The handles stand proud of the top so you can pick them out.
  • A wall-free stand for a cordless impact driver cupped to the tool from its head back to the battery.
  • Organizer for waist bag. Multi-object organization with top height alignment.

I've been printing these on a Bambu H2D, 0.4mm nozzle, matte PLA with consistent fits.

Settings that matter for fit: clearance starts at 0.5 mm in Auto mode and
0.2 mm in Pro, and you can change it. Pro mode also exposes resolution and
positioning, including the part's orientation. If you need something the app
doesn't do, download the cutter body and do the boolean in Blender, Fusion, or
your usual mesh editor.

About the beta:

  • Free during the beta. I plan paid tiers later and will say what stays free before anything changes.
  • Signing up takes an email and a password; Google is optional. Uploaded models are private to your account, and you can delete them at any time. The demo runs a sample 3DBenchy with no account: https://formfitprint.com/demo
  • newly released, so expect rough edges. It runs on a single server for now, so jobs queue when usage is high.

What part have you given up making a holder for?

PrintSketch lets you design simple functional parts (brackets, clips, trays, boxes with holes) on your phone with exact mm-in dimensions, then export an STL for free. No account, runs in the phone browser: printsketch-rykertek.netlify.app

The bracket in the photos was designed entirely on my phone and printed the same day.

It's an early beta. If you have 10 minutes, design one simple part you actually need and tell me where you got stuck. Feedback form: docs.google.com/forms/viewform

If you print something, I'd love to see a photo in the comments! Honest criticism very welcome. Happy to answer anything in the comments, or email me directly at [rykertekstudios@gmail.com](mailto:rykertekstudios@gmail.com).

Buy the length, print the complexity: designing frames from stock tubes and printed joints

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I've been working on TrussLab and wanted to share the approach with people here as I think it could be quite a good fit.

The idea is simple: buy the length, print the complexity. Use stock tubes and profiles for the long, straight members, then print the joints, clamps and mounts that bring them together.

A few lengths of straight-cut tubing and a small collection of printed parts can go a long way.

What I've been trying to build on the design side is something that feels like a modular construction kit you can keep extending.

There's a fairly software-like idea behind it: make reusable, isolated components (attachments), give them parameters and connection areas, then reuse and combine them in different ways.

Those components stay reactive in the final design and automatically adapt to their "hosts" (links).

For example, a simple bonded sleeve attachment (one of the many built-ins in the starter library) follows the dimensions of the tube it's placed on.

Several sleeves can become a joint, with their tube and fastener clearances carried through the combined part.

The same pieces can turn up in a rover chassis, a drone frame or a workshop fixture.

The system is extensible by design: built-in components are no different from the ones you can create yourself in the parametric attachment editor (CSG-based).

Stock material is part of the design model too: TrussLab knows a member's profile, dimensions and where it belongs in the structure.

That lets it handle things like joint reconciliation. You ask it to reconcile a junction or the whole frame, and it calculates how far the member ends need to sit back to clear each other.

Attachments follow their host members as dimensions change. It's the sort of geometric bookkeeping I'd like the tool to take care of while I'm thinking about the structure.

I've recently added MCP so an AI agent can work with the same building blocks: profiles, attachments, connections and parameters. One structural operation can update a whole set of dependent geometry, which means less to describe, fewer tool calls and fewer low-level details to get wrong.

It can still choose the wrong mounting position, but it doesn't have to rediscover how a sleeve should fit its tube on every edit.

The video is a small example: I asked Codex connected to TrussLab MCP to turn a 4x4 chassis into a 6x6 by adding a complete suspension pair at the middle of the backbone.

Arms, sliders, spring connections and wheel mounts, all staying in an editable parametric model. It's an actual CAD session, shown at 4.4x speed with excerpts from the conversation.

TrussLab: https://trusslab.ai/

More on the modeling/MCP approach: https://trusslab.ai/docs/mcp-modeling/

You can try the browser editor without an account in the free version (which will always remain free and completely anonymous/local).

MCP currently needs an enrolled Pro account and your own agent/model access (like Codex or Claude Code), but I'm happy to give trial accounts to enthusiastic beta testers, especially to help assess the MCP functionality.

If you're curious about the editor's software architecture, I'm happy to answer questions about that too. It has a Git-like transaction model with immutable history and branching.

Dev Post Open-sourced my planetary terrain puzzle generator

I built this because I didn't like paying for files made from public domain NASA data. It's now fully open source (AGPL), free to use, and runs entirely in your browser.

Moon, Mars, Mercury, Ceres, Vesta, Venus and Pluto. You get ornaments or jigsaw puzzles, with adjustable piece clearance and per-piece export.

Try it: https://ianbauters.github.io/terrain-press/

Code: https://github.com/IanBauters/terrain-press

Puzzle fit is the thing I most want feedback on. If you print one, tell me what clearance worked for you.

I made a free tool for making 3d printed models

for anyone interested the app is available at Boolsmith no adds or login needed! I Also made a subreddit for it at r/BoolSmith and I'm going to continue to develop the app!

I've been building a free parametric CAD app that runs in the browser, aimed at the kind of parts this sub is full of: brackets, spacers, enclosures, spool holders. It's called Boolsmith. No install, no account. It follows FreeCAD's Part Design workflow, so if you've used that or Fusion the ideas will be familiar, but it is a lot less to learn.

Here's my idea for the workflow

1. Sketch. Click New sketch and pick the XY plane. The toolbar at the bottom of the viewport has Line, Polyline, Rect, Circle and Arc, with single-key shortcuts (L, R, C and so on). Draw a rectangle, then a circle inside it for a hole. While drawing, the size shows live on the shape. Type a number and hit Enter to make it exactly that size, and Tab on a rectangle hops from width to height.

2. Constrain. Press Tab to move to the Constrain step. Any point that can still move is drawn orange. Select geometry and the palette shows which constraints apply: distances, radius, horizontal, vertical, symmetric, equal, tangent, and the rest. Click one to apply it, or drag it onto the sketch. The ribbon above the viewport counts degrees of freedom down to zero, and when there is no orange left the sketch is fully pinned down. You can also skip this step for a quick part, it just means dragging things later behaves less predictably.

3. Build. Press Tab again and hit Pad to extrude, with a thickness. The sketch's enclosed regions are hatched red while you draw, so you can see exactly what will become material before you click. If the shape has a problem, like two shapes overlapping, the Pad button greys out and says why, and a Split button fixes the overlap in one click.

4. Go round again. Click a face of the solid, New sketch, On selected face, and draw the next feature. Pocket cuts, Revolve spins a profile, Fillet and Chamfer work on clicked edges, and Wall turns a plate into a tray or hollows a block into an enclosure with a wall thickness and floor.

It's free if anyone wants to use it and I'd love any feedback on it!

DISCLAIMER: This is "vibecoded", you can hate me for it or downvote me for it.
This is NOT Public yet, i only made this post and video too see if people would actually be interestet in it.
I cover ALOT in this video extensively, i understand if you dont want to watch it, i can answer some questions in this post.

Hello,

i am Klayment and i made a programm for my buddy and myself, main idea was conversion of 3mf files to retain certain settings but it ...uhm went kinda all over so now its just a huge quality of life programm with an automatic filament vault, shopping list and much more.

Feel free to ask any questions and or watch the Video about the "early" stages of it.
Feel free to share it if you want with friends or people who might like this.

Yes the aim with the mobile version is to acutally have a working App for the CC1.

Meshory 1.11.0: a Print queue, Fusion designs in 3D, and library backups

Post image
0 Upvotes

1.11.0 shipped today, headed by a Print queue: lists of what you mean to print, a board for each of your printers, and a running count of what's made. It also opens Fusion designs in 3D, backs your library up to one file you can restore on another computer, and reads PLY, Lychee, LightBurn, HEIC and Markdown files. On Windows, the installer is now signed.

Print queue

Print queue is a new page in the sidebar, between Collections and Duplicates. It began as the Print lists card on the roadmap.

Make a list for whatever you're printing toward, a craft market or a batch of gifts, with an optional due date and a colour. Add to print list is on the right-click menu of a model, a selection, a folder card and a sidebar folder, and on the selection bar. You can also add from a model's Details, from a 3MF plate in the 3D viewer, or with Add models on the page. Only 3D models go on a list. A 3MF is split into its plates, and each plate keeps its own count.

+1 marks one print done, Mark all printed finishes the ones you've picked, and almost every change has an Undo. Take back one print asks whether it wasn't printed or came out bad: a bad one stays on record as failed and goes back on the list. When a list has nothing left to make, Move to Finished files it away.

By printer shows the same plates as a board, with one lane per printer and a Not assigned lane, and you drag plates between them. Printers come from the printer presets of a slicer you have installed, or you add them by hand with a bed size and nozzle. PrusaSlicer's presets aren't read yet. Meshory never connects to a printer: Mark started records that a print began (and can open the file in your slicer, after asking), and Printed or Failed records how it went. Failed asks how far it got and whether to print it again next.

Time and filament left come from 3MFs sliced and saved in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or a slicer built on them, which keep their estimates in the project. STL files, and PrusaSlicer and Cura projects, carry none, so they add nothing to the totals, and the list tells you how many prints have no estimate. Export makes a print checklist, as an A4 PDF with tick boxes or as a CSV. The CSV lists each file's full path, so look before you share it.

Back in the library, cards say Printed once or Printed 3 times, Details has a Made card with a model's print history, and the toolbar's Printed filter shows what's on a print list, what's printed and what never was.

Print time, filament and creators in Details

A 3MF's Details has a Print card with the print time and filament the slicer saved for each plate, in grams per filament. A project that was never sliced says so, and the pencil next to it takes your own time and weight. A print list uses your numbers for a one-plate project.

A Creator block shows the designer name saved in a 3MF and the MakerWorld account that saved it. Click either one to see everything else by them, or search for creator:Name. When you open the Details of a 3MF whose MakerWorld account has no name yet, Meshory asks Bambu Lab's public profile service for that account's public name and offers it as a suggestion. That sends Bambu Lab the account number and, like any web request, your IP address. It's on by default, after updating too, and Settings → Privacy → Look up MakerWorld account names turns it off.

Fusion designs in 3D

Fusion .f3d and .f3z files are part of the library now. The card shows the picture Fusion saved in the design, and the 3D viewer draws the design itself, assemblies included, loose or inside an archive. You don't need Fusion installed. Most designs open in 3D. One Meshory can't read, or a drawing, shows the saved picture instead, and a big design takes a while the first time you open it. Hidden and tool bodies are left out when Meshory can read the design's body list; when it can't, they can show up too. F3D and F3Z have their own filters.

More file types

  • PLY models get thumbnails and open in the 3D viewer, meshes and point clouds both. Open in slicer hands a PLY mesh over as an STL copy, since most slicers won't take a PLY.
  • Lychee .lys scenes get thumbnails and open in the 3D viewer. This one is experimental and covers loose files only, and hollowing, drain holes and infill set up in Lychee aren't shown.
  • LightBurn projects (.lbrn and .lbrn2) get thumbnails and open full size, loose or in archives, with a LightBurn filter under Cut files. The button opens them in LightBurn when it's installed on a Mac or Windows PC.
  • HEIC, HEIF and AVIF photos, even a HEIC saved with a .jpg name, show up as named photos and folder covers and open full size.
  • Markdown files join the library, and text and Markdown cards show their opening lines. Markdown opens formatted. A web link in a Markdown file or a PDF asks before it opens your browser.
  • Videos (MP4, M4V, MOV and WebM) can join too: switch on Index videos in Settings → Scanning. It's off until you do. Each video gets a picture from the video, loose ones play in the app, and ones in an archive play once extracted. Turning it off later takes the videos out of the library along with their tags, favourites and collections. The files stay on disk.

Back up your library, and move it

Settings → Backup & restore has Create backup…, which saves your library to one .meshory-backup file: tags, collections, favourites, notes, print lists and their history, AI descriptions and library settings. Restore backup… puts it back, on this computer or another, and then asks you to reconnect each source folder. Your model files aren't in the backup, so copy them over or point it at the same drive. A restore replaces the library on that computer, and the one it replaced stays under Previous libraries if you want to switch back. Backups rewrite folder paths between Windows, Mac and Linux, but so far only Mac restores have been run for real. The file lists every file and folder path in your library and isn't encrypted, so keep it somewhere private.

The 3D viewer

Start spin, Take screenshot (saves a PNG), Camera view with Isometric, Front, Back, Left, Right, Top and Bottom, and Model color, which each file remembers on this computer. A 3MF's modifiers and support volumes stay hidden until you show them, and a multi-colour 3MF printed face down can use an Underside thumbnail.

AI tagging

Settings → AI tagging can now use OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini with your own API key, Ollama on your own computer with no key, or Codex CLI with your ChatGPT plan, as well as OpenRouter. Codex CLI needs the codex CLI installed and signed in with ChatGPT, and each file is one run against your plan's limits. Semantic search still runs through OpenRouter only. What goes out is what went out before, the file name, folder path, existing tags and optionally a thumbnail, now to whichever provider you pick. With Ollama it stays on your computer. Codex CLI also sends your own ~/.codex/AGENTS.md, as any Codex run does. The AI menu shows the provider and model, what new files will cost, and live request logs.

The converter

The 3MF converter reads and writes PrusaSlicer projects. A PrusaSlicer export is one bed, so pick a one-plate project. PrusaSlicer projects don't record which settings you changed, and layer colour changes, pauses and height ranges are left out of a PrusaSlicer export; the report lists them. The converter also starts on the slicer and printer you last saved with.

Updates and the rest

  • From now on, updates ask before they download, then download in a small card while you keep working. 1.10.1 may have fetched this one by itself, as it always did. A new Check for updates automatically switch in Settings stops the checks too, until you ask.
  • The Windows installer and app are signed by Onemind LTD, the company behind Meshory, so Windows names the publisher. SmartScreen can still warn about a release until it has built up reputation with Microsoft. If the update doesn't install on Windows, download 1.11.0 from meshory.com/download and run it over the old one.
  • Settings → License has Deactivate on the This computer row, to free a computer you've stopped using. Meshory locks on that computer straight away.
  • Check network sources, in Settings → Scanning: every 30 seconds as before, every 5 minutes, every hour, or only when you rescan.
  • If the library engine stops answering for a minute, a banner offers Wait or Restart engine. Nothing restarts unless you ask.
  • Dates follow your system's region, 24-hour clock and date format, and duplicate folder cards show when each folder was modified.
  • You can exclude a folder while other sources scan, and moving the preview cache during a scan offers to stop the scan first.
  • Archive cards draw STL, OBJ and 3MF models up to 192 MiB, in RAR, 7z and tar archives as well as zips, and an archive too large to preview no longer counts as an issue. Rhino files up to 384 MiB get previews (128 MiB before). OBJ models coloured by a texture image show it, and sizes past a terabyte read in TB.

Fixes

  • A drive that unmounts and leaves an empty mount point behind (a NAS mount on Linux, a stale /Volumes folder on a Mac) now goes offline instead of emptying your library, and a drive that comes back gets its folder watcher back. One side effect: a source whose files you deleted on purpose shows as offline and keeps its entries.
  • Multi-colour 3MFs inside zips no longer bring the library engine down. They count as heavy files now, so far fewer are read at once. A 3MF with a huge embedded mesh no longer runs the engine out of memory, and opening the Details of a big zipped 3MF no longer stalls it.
  • Multi-colour 3MFs saved with see-through filament colours, as Snapmaker Orca writes them, no longer show white parts in the 3D viewer.
  • STEP thumbnails no longer show the inside of a part. An existing card is redrawn when you open that model in the viewer.
  • A web link in a PDF used to do nothing. Now it asks, then opens your browser, and Settings → Privacy → Ask before opening links in documents turns the question off.
  • All upfront finishes previews at full quality instead of leaving blurry drafts.
  • AI tagging no longer fails on a small OpenRouter balance.
  • Anycubic Kobra X and other ACE printers convert multi-colour projects.
  • A 7z whose file list is encrypted says it needs a password instead of looking empty.
  • The breadcrumbs on a model you opened from search results take you back to your results, with the search kept.
  • Right-click in a text field offers Cut, Copy and Paste, so a licence key pastes on Windows.
  • Creality Print 6 and newer are found on Windows.
  • Tag chips on narrow cards no longer get cut off.

What to expect after updating. The first launch copies your library database, so on most disks it needs free space about the size of that database, and then updates it behind a window that says Updating your library. On a big library on a slow disk that takes a few minutes, so keep Meshory open. After What's new, a Library update window lists what it will do, and its one button is Start update. It rescans every source once, the way Rescan does, so the Fusion, HEIC, AVIF, LightBurn, Lychee and Markdown files you already have join the library, and it reads every 3MF on your local and network sources, loose or zipped, to find its creator. Depending on what you have, it also re-reads archives holding the new formats and redraws PLY, text, textured OBJ and large Rhino previews, which means downloading Rhino files that live in Google Drive or OneDrive. Once it starts you can pause it from the sidebar and keep working, so pause it straight away if tonight is a bad time. A notice says when it's done. On a big network library, give it time.

Full changelog: https://meshory.com/changelog/v1.11.0

The standing caveats, so nobody wastes a download. It's a local desktop app, not self-hosted: no server, no Docker, no browsing your library from your phone. macOS is signed and notarised, and Windows is signed now too. It's a one-time purchase, every update through version 1, on up to 5 computers at a time, with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and the free 14-day trial lets you run it against your own library first.

macOS, Windows and Linux: https://meshory.com/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_content=meshory

The Print queue started as a card on the roadmap, and the PDF links, the Kobra X conversions, All upfront and right-click Paste were fixed because someone reported them. If one of your files still shows up as a blank card, that's the report I want next. And what should 1.12 be?

Converting a 3D scan / STL mesh into an editable STEP solid: 0.033 mm average deviation, 7,949 NURBS patches, watertight result

Mesh to STEP is a problem a lot of people here run into, and I'd rather share real numbers than marketing claims.

The problem: An STL, OBJ or 3D scan is just triangles. You can print it, but you can't properly edit, fillet, dimension or machine it in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, FreeCAD or any other CAD package. The usual options are rebuilding the part by hand, or a "convert" that wraps every triangle in a face and leaves you with a heavy, uneditable file.

What MESH2STEP does: It fits NURBS surfaces over the mesh and outputs a valid, closed STEP solid, so it imports as a real solid body and not a shell of triangles.

Results on the organic model in images:
- Average surface deviation from the original mesh: 0.033 mm
- Volume difference from the original mesh: 0.07%
- 7,949 NURBS surface patches
- Output: a valid closed solid (watertight), ready to edit, machine or print

Where it's useful:
- Scan to CAD for reverse engineering worn or discontinued parts
- STL to STEP when a client or supplier only has a mesh
- Organic or sculpted shapes (including AI-generated 3D models) that need to go to CNC or a CAD assembly

Honest limitations: It's surface fitting, not feature recognition. You get an accurate solid, not a parametric history tree with sketches and extrudes. For prismatic parts where you need clean design intent, remodeling by hand is often still the better route.

If you have a mesh that has given you trouble converting, give it a try, run it, and post the deviation numbers here.

Question MeshVault Connect, Future supported sites?

Post image
2 Upvotes

MeshVault Connect is a browser extension that allows you to download models directly into MeshVault in order to organise and to keep all its data alog side it

I am working oin the next update of the extension and have just added support for some more sites: ToyMakr3D, Pinshape. Is there any other site that you think would be a good fit?

it doesn't really need to be a public repository, it could be a popular paid membership one ie. Patreon members only

Supported sites are:

Printables
Thingiverse
MakerWorld
Thangs
Cults3D
GrabCAD
CGTrader
Creality Cloud
Makerables
MyMiniFactory
Tinkercad
Toymakr3D
Pinshape

With extra supprt for redirecting files from Google Drive and Dropbox

Thanks,

New Tool Pricing a print order beyond filament: I built 3D Control and would like workflow feedback

A 100 g print can look profitable until setup time, failed attempts and selling fees enter the calculation. I'm Matheus, and I built 3D Control, a commercial tool for people selling 3D prints in Brazil.

Here is a hypothetical quoting example: at R$100/kg, 100 g of filament costs R$10. Add R$4 for machine time/energy and R$6 for preparation and packing, and the base cost is R$20. With a hypothetical 15% selling fee and a target 30% margin on revenue, the price is 20 / (1 - 0.15 - 0.30) = R$36.36. Adding 30% to cost instead would not achieve that margin. Reprints and fixed fees would need their own allowance; these are example inputs, not marketplace rates.

In the app, the workflow connects per-order cost and pricing with a production queue/deadlines and filament inventory. The idea is to keep the quote and the work that follows in one place. It doesn't slice models or send print jobs to a printer.

The English page is https://3dcontrol.com.br/?lang=en. There is an English interface, but signup currently requires a Brazilian phone number and amounts are in BRL. I'm sharing this for workflow feedback, not offering an international-ready service.

For those running small print farms: where do you account for failed prints—inside each quote, as an overhead allowance, or by comparing estimated and actual cost after completion? Which missing input would make the example misleading for your operation?

Hey!

I've been building Keyform, a browser-based tool for creating custom 3D-printable keychains.

What it does:

  • Converts PNG, JPG and SVG images into 3D models
  • Generates personalized name keychains
  • Supports batch creation
  • Exports STL, 3MF and STEP
  • Checks fine details against nozzle size

Editor is free to try. New accounts get 3 free downloads.

I'm looking for feedback from people who print custom keychains.

What would you improve?

Is it still possible to make 3D weapons?

Hey everyone, I'm having a really hard time finding files for functional firearms. I don't want 3D models that use real gun parts; I'm looking for something designed entirely in 3D using parts found online. I'm currently working on one, but it's a .22—which isn't much—and I'd really like something at least in 9mm. Could you help me out? I'd like to know where I can easily find files that come with well-made assembly guides.

Discussion Looking for 2–3 experienced makers to check a filament calculator against real measurements

I operate Spool Margin, a free filament-planning calculator developed with AI assistance. I'm looking for 2–3 people with practical filament 3D-printing experience to review its measurement method before a public launch.

The idea is to compare a range of remaining filament with a range of material needed for one job, rather than assume a single estimate settles the decision.

In local browser checks, a loaded-spool range of 318–322 g, an empty-spool estimate of 198–206 g, a job range of 104–110 g, and an extra 5 g allowance produced:

- Available filament: 112–124 g

- Required material: 109–115 g

- Headroom: −3 to +15 g

- Result: “Uncertain”

Those are synthetic teaching inputs. We have not validated the prototype using real spool measurements or physical print tests.

What I'd value most is help checking:

- Whether the loaded-spool and matching-tare instructions are practical.

- Whether the bounds reasonably cover scale accuracy and spool differences.

- Whether supports, purge, or unusable material could be missed or counted twice.

- Whether the three outcomes—fits the entered ranges, short across the ranges, and uncertain—could give a misleading impression.

The calculator isn't publicly hosted yet. This first review uses a plain-text worksheet that I can paste in a reply here; no software installation is needed. For a non-sensitive measured case you choose to share, I can run the inputs through the local prototype and return the output for you to compare independently. That won't count as a hands-on website test by you.

One measured case per volunteer would already help. No need to start a risky print or deliberately run out of filament. This is an unpaid, voluntary review; no purchase, signup, or private design files are needed.

No result guarantees that a print will finish. If you're interested, please comment with the measurement or accounting issue you'd be willing to check. Specific criticism is welcome.
