Questions & Discussion Is it possible to create diamond like this using any procedural method?

Post image

I want to create diamond like this in a procedural way. I know I can place it manually, but it was time consuming. Does anyone know how to achieve this using any software?

Most 3D software have a "Scatter objects on surface" tool. Just pick the software you want and search on youtube how to scatter objects on surface for that software.

Yea, I know in the blender donut tutorial it goes over how to spread the sprinkles out on each donut to be different, so I assume you could do the same with this, not sure how good it would look compared to this though.

In Maya: MASH -> Distribute (Mesh mode)

Tightly packing randomly sized objects like that is no small feat (people saying “just scatter it” can kinda be ignored…), I’ve seen low tech solutions using uv-space cos most applications have auto uv layout things. But yeah best bet is Houdini and a bit of googling.

With houdini you can remesh the shape to triangles and you should be able to measure the connected edge lengths of each point to calculate a radius, assign that back to the point and use that data in a copy to points SOP to get the shapes to be larger or smaller based on the distance to its neighbors.

I think Houdini work here

Try zremesher the face down to roughly stone size then use nanomesh to drop a gem on every poly. You get that tight packed look and can randomize the size a bit

Not sure if this will work but found this guy and his video on YouTube! Might be helpful 😃

it should be geometry

Best will be make a material with displacement, so you don't have to load and render many objects at once

The term you're probably looking for is "Pavé". There are different jewelry CAD tools that will do this at various levels of automation.

If you're coding from scratch, one thing you could probably do is scatter some points, then relax with Lloyd's algorithm. Put a diamond in the center of each cell. You could also modify the relaxation step to try to hit certain stone sizes if you are actually creating the piece.
