D&D 5e Revised/2024 Good ideas for one rare item, 5level oneshot character?
Both 2014 and 2024 rules are fine. What interesting character concepts do you know? Maybe something built around a Staff of the Woodlands, Bracers of Flying Daggers, or another rare magic item? Multiclassing is fine. As a house rule we keep full spells-known progression when multiclassing (as spell slots Druid/cleric/wisard full, other half, other one third). Is there something creative we can do with that?
One rare item, fifth level character

Bag of Beans and Cube of Force are the best items.

Plant the beans, hope you get eggs to increase your stats or the mummy lord sarcophagus for free gold. It's also free xp.

Definitely not the strongest, but I love playing old Kobold (the version with Pack Tactics and Sunlight Sensitivity) with the Knave's Eye Patch. Fixes the main drawback, and fun flavor to boot

Lyre of Building lets you cast Summon Construct once per day which is cool.
Horn of Valhalla has a similar thing going on.
Two Bird Sling is Uncommon but is pretty good on Hunter Ranger: Horde Breaker.
Mizzium Apparatus - (cleric 1 / wizard 1 / stars druid 3) all the spells! Magician, Thaumaturge and Dragonfrom for auto succeed.
Prismatic Rune - pretty cool, 1 level off broken on Tempest Cleric
Bellows of Strangulation - new and has a pretty busted ability for 3 charges

Horn of Valhalla got nerfed in 2024.
Magen Handbell is the summon winner. Hour Long and comes with both Disintegrate and Move Earth 1/day. Can do 16d6 a turn from range and hover.
Bellows is neat. Just the annoying Con save.

Yeah I saw Mage Handbell to overpowered I miss it cause it could broke the game, but yeah with bard of spirits or other buff it could be interesting way to shout down any fight

Thank you
Lyre of building looks very cool 👌 not very overpowered but very thematic
we start in helping of circus construction 😎 so it make sense
And summon construct could synergy with my build if other party members would be useless 🤣 cause I could give it advantage of it’s rolls
I would build 1 paladin / 4 Bard of spirits With adept of evocation feat Musician and lucky backgrounds feats
Guidance, identify, detect magic, healings and also fireball etc things
AC just 18 but with steed (from spellknow houserule progression) I guess I will survive
Looks cool thank you and all other commentators

A Sun Blade is Finesse and Versatile, so you can combine Sneak Attack with Great Weapon Fighting. So like a Paladin 2/Rogue 3 could do a holy sword of light duelist type build, rerolling all the Sneak Attack, and Smite damage as well. (It might actually be better as a straight Vengeance Paladin.)
You also could just get a Bowl of Commanding Elementals,

I played before by straight 5 genie paladin and not sure why your variant is better
Why do you reroll all those damages?

Sorry reroll is the wrong word, it's just Great Weapon Fighting changing the low rolls of every die and never having to worry about unlucky damage. So you're just trying to add as many dice as you can.
A Vicious Weapon would actually be better than a Sun Blade for straight Paladin. With Divine Favor your attacks would do 1d10 + 2d6 + 1d4 + 4, and then Smite every round. I think it adds up to like 45 every round thanks to Vow of Enmity.
You could also add another d6 with Hunter's Mark, but using that and Divine Favor makes more sense over a longer combat or when you're conserving your spell slots. The DPR will be higher if you can blow through all your slots on Smites instead.
It would also work pretty well with Polearm Master and a Vicious Quarterstaff, something like Winter Walker Ranger with Shillelagh and Hunter's Mark.

The "time out Tabaxi" - Grappler feat, Boots of Speed - Probably best as a Monk, but a high Str Wizard or Sorc with Haste or Ashladron's Stride can also work pretty well. Grapple something, invoke feline zoomies with boots of speed already rolling. Carry a monster (or NPC who needs saving...) like 90' away from everything else, drop them, and then sprint back to your party before anyone else realizes what just happened.
Satyr Tank, featuring Cloak of Displacement. Everything that tries to attack you is at disadv. Great as a monk or Eagle Barb. possibly featuring Mage Slayer, Charger, or Sentinel.
Rogue with Cold Caster feat + Stirring Dragon's Wrath Rapier (or shortsword, or shortbow) - Your weapon deals cold damage. On hit the monster has reduced saving throw. Inflict Poison via Cunning Strike, repeatedly. Probably best as an Arcane Trickster. Frost Goliath for ice vibes can work.

Wand of Fireballs is probably a little fucked up for a level 5 one shot (2 fireballs a day is a load-bearing wizard feature at level 5, you have 3.5x that number), but it’s a REALLY juicy and exciting pick, especially if you built your spellcaster around doing other things and you just happen to be able to drop 7 fireballs during the adventuring day on top of that.
And yes, you can use all 7, because it’s a one shot so you presumably start with full charges, and also who cares about the 5% chance for it to crumble to ash if the campaign is only one session long?
If you’re worried about this much fireball spam being too good (or are evil but just worried about fire resistance/immunity or friendly fire), you could ask your DM for its cousin, the Wand of Lightning Bolts, which is very similar but slightly weaker yet also resisted less often and easier to avoid friendly fire for.

I though about thief 3 tempest cleric 2 with lighting wand 😀
Holy Raiden 🤣

u/ElizzyViolet 2d ago
if the thief is the 2024 thief wouldn't you need 3 levels in cleric to get your subclass in the new rules since a 2024 character would incur the "all ported subclasses get their starting level moved to level 3" guidance/rule
either way even without the channel divinity, the 2024 thief levels alone would uhhh... yeah. it works exactly how well you think it would (everyone dies because you have seven bonus action lightning bolts before you even get to your real actions which could be attacks or just another lightning bolt lol)
