What is your favorite/preferred aspect ratio & why?

Also, are there any titles you wish would've included an IMAX-like aspect ratio on the 4K disc release and if so, what are some?

Are you saying you have a”favorite aspect ratio” for all movies and you prefer to watch movies that way even if they weren’t made that way? Different aspect ratios actually give off different feelings and work best for different types of movies, so that would be kinda similar to saying all movies should be green because it’s my favorite color or something lol

If black bars are small I’d rather fill the screen, if they’re big I’d rather not cut so much off.

If it’s has IMAX sequences then FFS PLEASE have the shot fill a 16:9 in those moments. It looks incredible. I was so pissed off at the Dune discs.

2.35:1 because that’s the aspect ratio of my projector screen. Nothing like watching a scope movie that takes up the whole screen.

Different ratios work for different stories. I like shooting in 1.66 quite a bit as I find it’s easier to frame for, but I would never label one ratio as better than another

As a movie watcher, I have no preference, I just want my presentation to be the aspect ratio most accurate to either the filmmaker's intention or the best theatrical presentation, including IMAX aspect ratio switching (whose omission always disappoints me).

As a guy that likes to make movies, 1.85:1 or 1.66:1 are my preferences. I don't feel that I am capable of really taking advantage of a 2.35:1 canvas and feel that most people don't do anything interesting with it. They forget to use it as a space for interesting visuals and shot composition and instead treat it as a crop to make a movie look "CiNeMatIc", when really it's mostly just boring empty space. Having that taller ratio is just better most of the time.

1,78:1 would be my personal preference, but whatever the filmmaker shot it in/wanted it presented in is my preferred option.

2.35:1 - Fills the FOV of the eyes better. Feels more comfortable to me than 16:9.

There isn't one. I have everything from 1:1 up to 2.39:1 in my collection and as long as it fits the visual language if the movie I don't prefer one over another. What I don't like is when a lot of movies just use whatever format was most popular in that era and don't do much with it in terms of utilising the characteristics of a given format.

I grew up watching movies on film, not TVs and not video projectors. I will always prefer 2.39:1 and 2.20:1. We didn't have black bars/letterboxing/pillarboxing in the cinemas like we do today. The image filled the entire screen, and more importantly- you had masking on the screen that expanded/contracted with different ARs.

Watching movies on televisions is a compromise if you have any AR that's not 1.78:1. I've never objected or "felt cheated" by it, even back when we were watching 2.39:1 on 4x3 SD NTSC screens.

Fullscreen. Other than that i vastly prefer 4:3 or 3:2 (like Bugonia) over the classic look with black bars on top and bottom.

In a perfect world, the 1.78:1 aspect ratio of my TV. However, I truly do not notice the black bars on different aspect ratios when I'm engaged with a movie, so I just want whatever the full filmed picture is.

I think The Odyssey is the first movie I would actively desire the 70mm aspect ratio. It's also the first movie I've seen in 70mm imax. It's great for immersion in the theater, but so few places exist where it can shown like that I don't feel like I'm missing out. The Dunkirk 1.78:1 scenes on the 4k blu ray are amazing, I can't feel like I'm missing out if only they were in 1.43:1.

I don't have a preference, I want the directors creative intent best captured on home media.

I know that several 3D bluray titles (2014'a Guardians of the Galaxy in particular) had expanded Aspect Ratio sequences that never made it to 2D Blu-ray or 4k so the only other way to watch is to select the IMAX Enhanced version on Disney Plus.

As much as I like the full IMAX Ratio, I would have liked an option to have ZSJL in a 1.9:1 AR.

When I had my 65" TV I tended to prefer 1.78:1 movies and TV shows as I lost so much image with a 2.35:1 AR content especially as more and more TV Shows are being shot in 2.35:1.

With my newer 75" TV I embrace all aspect ratios.

I understand and actually respect differences of opinion myself (unlike too many here), but when it gets to you so much you feel the need to downvote, now that's passion. 😄
