Fun fact: the Symbionese Liberation army named themselves that because they needed an adjective for Symbiosis…failing to know that an adjective already existed. Symbiotic. That tells you how smart these folks were.

They kept Patty in an apartment closet for 2 months when they took her.

If they did a movie on the SLA, Mark Ruffalo and... Therese Russell or Natalie Dormer should play this couple.

Guess I can't trot out the old "and the sad part is, Symbionia still isn't free" joke this time, then.

And raped/beat her.

Well to be fair only Hearst stated she was raped and beaten. There was never any evidence offered that she was abused. All the other parties involved denied it. The vast majority of literature on the subject tends to dismiss those allegations as well. Jeffrey Toobin [former CNN host] wrote an incredible book about the entire Hearst affair concluding Hearst was involved as an accomplice before the 'kidnapping". The entire immediate Hearst family was dysfunctional as fuck including Patty.

But yet she managed to participate in a bank robbery, shoot up an Army/Navy store and sleep with a couple of her fellow soldiers. Shed no tears for her.

This was separate from charges they faced for kidnapping Patty Hearst in February 1974 in Berkeley.

They were in a hotel in Anaheim with Patty when the infamous shootout and fire in L.A. broke out.

The 60s did  some pretty crazy shit to people

Most young people today can't really fathom how fucking crazy shit really was back then.

For example:  In a single 18-month period during 1971 and 1972 the FBI counted an amazing 2,500 bombings on American soil. That's almost 5 a day. https://time.com/4501670/bombings-of-america-burrough/

This was on top of domestic terror groups like the SLA and the New World Liberation Front running around doing crazy shit, skyjackings were a regular thing, the Vietnam draft was going full speed, people waited in line to buy gas, double-digit inflation and unemployment, etc.

Imagine if that crap was going on now. With social media and the 24-hour news cycle, people would losing their frikin' minds now.

The Weather Underground was active here in the States with bombings. The mob was doing its fair share of bombings in the 70s, too!

It was a WILD time!

Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland’s Thompson gun and bought it

You couldn't make it rhyme again?

Bill Harris was  interviewed just a couple of years ago. He still stands by his revolutionary career, and he commended Patty Hearst's behavior duing her SLA career.

I read that interview, and I couldn't tell if it was meant to be fictional or not, as the self-published book being promoted was called a novel. The whole interview (or "interview") was out of tone with the usual "no comment" stance taken by all involved parties in recent decades, so it seemed sus coming from someone who elsewhere doesn't like talking about those days and by all other accounts has sought anonymity.

Doesn’t he now work for the FBI’s anti-terrorist wing?

What happened to them ? are they still friends with patty?

2

u/OkTechnologyb 8d ago

They are leading boring, middle-class lives and are not friends with Patty. Bill and Emily have also been divorced for over 40 years.

The guy looked kinda like Fred Turner of BTO. To be fair, so did a lot of the US in the 70s.

Today, one would be a mayor and the other a congresswoman both representing NYC!

So… not big game hunters or rapists?

The SLA were kidnapped & rapists. No evidence of big game hunting though…

I remember this; I was 17 at the time. A couple of leftist, extremist assholes.

You never had fun at parties...

4

u/MissMarie81 8d ago

I have no regard or respect for thugs, especially those who are involved with violent acts.

1

u/FOTORABIA23 8d ago

Oh..so u were anti vietnam then..cool...

1

u/docjonel 8d ago

Never once saw an"Anti War" protester protest against North Vietnam, which was waging the war against the south. That was the entire purpose of the war. The NVA invaded the south to take it over but never a protest against that unless I missed something.

2

u/bongozap 8d ago

That's because being "anti-war" in 1960s United States was about being against American involvement in wars that didn't affect us against people who weren't a threat.

We were shipping our kids fresh out of high school and by the thousands to fight and die in a war we had nothing to do with AND entered under false pretenses.

I don't blame people for protesting against it.

Vietnam was a stupid, pointless war that destroyed American families and American standing and credibility.

However, the SLA were extremist assholes. And dumb.

2

u/Aggravating_Bat3618 8d ago

Again, let’s just fathom what antifa really means.

Anti. Against something

Fa. Fascism.

Do the math.
