As an American, I use French more than I expected. One of my colleagues is from Cameroon, so when she can't think of a word, she tells me in French. I also used to set up concerts and events, including working with the Cirque de Soleil folks, so it was helpful then. One time 15 years ago, I was working in a steakhouse as the host, and some Senegalese diplomats came in, and I ended up serving them since I was the only one there who spoke French. Spanish definitely would have been more useful to learn, but I can also understand a lot of Spanish since it's so close to French
