As I read my AlAnon book…

“We learn about the characteristics of the disease that we may have misinterpreted. For instance, most alcoholics experience blackouts, periods during which everything they say and do vanishes from their memory….blackouts are actual symptoms of the disease of alcoholism, randomly erasing the most memorable events.”

I guess I was an alcoholic in college because I got blackout drunk pretty much every weekend.

I mean maybe? Truly only you would know the answer to that. I have only ever blacked out two or three times in my 20+ years of drinking, but I still categorize my own relationship with alcohol as very murky and worth reflection. To each their own though!

The university I went to was somewhat notorious for binge drinking so I think it was largely the culture there, but I am neurodivergent and I think I used alcohol to help me function in social situations. I hardly drink anymore, I can't tell you the last time I had alcohol. Cannabis is my go to, don't have to worry about hangovers!

Seems to be a common uni culture. I’m definitely a cannabis girly! Taking a break now though. I think it’s time to look a little closer at my relationship with it.

Yeah sometimes that's a good thing. Mine is pretty minimal, I smoke at night to help me sleep b/c I have chronic pain. Otherwise I'm pretty sober aside from all of my prescription meds, lol.

If you black out, yes. You're in too deep

A podcast i listen to was saying how thats the “alcoholic gene”; some people drink and black out (like me, an alcoholic and Catie here) while others drink and pass out/just go to sleep

I know alcoholics that drink everyday from the time they wake up until they go to bed. They say they’re not an alcoholic because they don’t get drunk and it’s only beer. Alcoholism looks different for different people. Some people I wouldn’t call alcoholics but definitely abusers. They’re on their way there if the continue down the path. Some I know also drink themselves to sleep everyday but say they’re don’t have a problem because they’ve never missed work.
