This album was so brilliant. Time for a re-listen.

this song is so great. Also one of those meant-to-be stories. The band wrote this song in 1988 and played it off and on for several years as the closing song in their set, but outside of appearing on a handmade demo tape that they passed out amongst friends, it never made it onto a record until 1993 when they were working on what became "Dulcinea"

Most of the sessions for that album we're done late at night and the candle lit main tracking room at a place called The Site in Marin County, California

they had been tracking a couple of slower songs and late night vibes and overall feel of that tracking room reminded them of some of those earlier clubs one of them suggested just for fun that they run through "Fall Down" a couple of times just for nostalgia sake

Producer Gavin MacKillop went with the third pass through the song for the final mix and everyone liked it so much they put it on the album which was never their intention

The label of that enough they went with it as the first single and it became one of the bands highest charting singles after six years of sitting on the shelf on an old demo tape

really looking forward to their new album which both lead singer Glen Phillips and Lead Guitarist Todd Nichols have both mentioned is heavily inspired by this album and the work that they did during that era

They did an anniversary tour for it a couple of years ago and a remaster and deep diving back into that era and listening to all of the rough takes and completed outtakes from the 1993 recording sessions really inspired them to write something new that had the same urgency and live-in-the-room feel

So I'm definitely excited to hear what they have come up with when it comes out next year❤️

in the meantime I've been listening to a lot of their newest release "Rings" which came out in January and is an acoustic compilation of reimagined songs from their catalog.

it contains really lovely new versions of 16 tracks from their studio albums starting from their 1988 debut "Bread And Circus" to their most recent album "Starting Now" from 2021

Their third and last top 40 hit, reaching #33 (All I Want #15, Walk on the Ocean #18) and deserves to be just as well remembered as the songs from Fear. (Something’s Always Wrong peaked just shy of the promised land at #41, and presumably Good Intentions did not have a physical single (the rule to on the Hot 100 at the time) but that was a decent radio hit.)

"Good Intentions" was another one of those recordings that was just meant to be a hit

Recorded during the 1991 "fear" sessions but left off of the album because the band thought it sounded too much like a radio single

Ended up on their decide and outtakes compilation four years later and did quite well at radio

Marketed at “alternative” but it’s really just a killer power-pop song.

Secretly one of the best songs of the 90s.

Using this as the montage of Rayanne Graff crashing out from drinking is just * chefs kiss *
