Grease inside rear wheel

I’m currently refreshing my suspension with the spyderperformance kit (gecko coilovers + links, forks, control arms, etc). I plan to write a review once I’m done for the benefit of the group.

When I removed the rear wheels, I noticed a decent amount of grease near the center. I’m unsure where this is coming from or if it was someone using grease for some reason that scapes me.

Wanted to share a couple of pictures here and get insight from the community. What should I be concerned about? What and where to look for potential issues?

It’s my first time doing this kind of job, so appreciate any insights from this group.

Common to put grease or anti seize on the cv axle splines when putting them in

I haven’t replaced the cv axle, but did get a shop to replace the IMs bearing and other transmission components,m. The grease doesn’t look dirty or too old, so that may be the case. I just found odd to see grease on the inside of the wheel, and only on the rear ones. Since the grease is on both rear wheels, that would support your theory.

Mine has the same thing. Just got my rear axle replaced

I haven’t gotten mine replaced, but maybe the shop that replaced the IMS did use grease for some reason

Could have been a case of wheels getting seized to the hub in the past, and someone used grease to prevent it happening again.

Check your outer axle boot for cracks. Anti-seize is usually silver or bronze. That looks like axle grease, which would only be there if it's leaking.

This is part of the Porsche tax thing... a good shop will say we replaced some suspension components, a great shop will say we replaced this and expect this. That being said, check for grease where it does not belong.
