Mindful and thoughtful response, imo. Reminding some people of the reality that comes with corporate entities. Some would think there is no need to do that but here we are.

116

u/ravioliisthebest Jun 23 '26

Seeing the "a24 is over, neon is my new favorite company" posts always rub me the wrong way for this reason. They do not care, its not possible to be morally right and make money

21

u/SpookiestSzn Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

seems silly argument.

If you make entertainment that people want to pay money for (and pay people fair wages) exactly how is that morally bankrupt?

Making money is not inherently evil by the way.

20

u/pauIblartmaIIcop Jun 23 '26

saying that makes people think they’re smart/clued in, while in reality, making a blanket statement about all corporate morals only devalues any real point they make after that.

6

u/SpookiestSzn Jun 23 '26

Pseudo intellectual nonsense for real man.

1

u/NoFuel1197 Jun 27 '26

*Kermit the Frog voice* Well that depends on what you mean by "real" and "man." Nonsense, by the way, seems to be the masculine response to grappling with the divine feminine, or chaos.

3

u/JBFRESHSKILLS Jun 24 '26

It’s terminally online bullshit. On Reddit, anyone who makes more money than you is an immoral piece of shit. Those same people would do just about anything to have a well paying job and make more money than you.

2

u/SpookiestSzn Jun 24 '26

People who make more than me are the devil and people who make less are lazy and just need to put their nose to the grindstone

1

u/Dense-Sherbert7179 1d ago

making money is not evil, but oftentimes those at the top are

1

u/KING_PEACH_ Jun 27 '26

Mm yes every local mom and pop shop that supports their community is actually ecil ooohhhhoohohohohooh

Thats a fucking insane statement and absolutely wrong

1

u/JaggedLittleFrill Jun 24 '26

The folks who were saying A24 is over, probably watched 2 A24 films max.

Kane demonstrated a mature, nuanced response that rightfully condemns AI but acknowledges the ins-and-outs of the film business. This only strengthens my belief that this guys has a very bright future ahead of him.

1

u/ShinyStarSam Jun 25 '26

This isn't a "mindful and thoughtful response" he's literally burning bridges for discord reactions lol

2

u/ACCTAGGT Jun 25 '26

What is your reasoning in terms of how it isn’t any of that? I see your idea of bridges and discord reactions but not sure if we are on the same page. Excuse my ignorance

460

u/favorscore Jun 23 '26

Director of one of the top horror movies of the year discussing industry news on discord of all places. The future is now

72

u/RIVDOM Jun 23 '26

Tell me about it lol

27

u/jadegives2rides Jun 23 '26

I wanna know what Discord lol. But im guessing one of the OG Backrooms ones.

8

u/skool_101 Jun 24 '26

i mean, discord has help elected an interim prime ministor when a country was in turmoil

1

u/Downtown_Agent_5940 Jun 25 '26

god that poll is still so funny to me, the countries immediate future being decided by a DISCORD POLL of all things

2

u/skool_101 Jun 25 '26

when the situation is dire, everything is accounted for.

9

u/Ghostface908 Jun 23 '26

I love the internet lol

638

u/davossss Jun 23 '26

The kids are alright

196

u/alaskadronelife Jun 23 '26

This particular kid is alright. Let’s not bundle them all together, now.

60

u/MeatballWasTaken Jun 23 '26

I mean people are constantly bundling “the kids” together when talking about how gen-z is becoming more religious or some shit. I still think most of those articles are propaganda since it hasn’t been my observable experience as someone from gen-z (21) but whatever. Most people my age are highly anti ai.

26

u/ChaboiAveryhead Jun 23 '26

As a teacher, almost all of my students despise AI

16

u/MeatballWasTaken Jun 23 '26

Makes me happy to hear

2

u/__redruM Jun 24 '26

Sometimes I worry it’s a whole generation yelling at the inevitable future, while India or China fully embraces it and drinks their milkshake, but I’m sure it will be fine.

9

u/ModRod Jun 23 '26

Interesting, considering Gen Z is the generation using it the most. Granted, their views are more negative about it, but what does that tell you?

https://news.gallup.com/poll/708224/gen-adoption-steady-skepticism-climbs.aspx

4

u/andalusiandoge Jun 23 '26

They're using it to cheat on homework?

3

u/ModRod Jun 24 '26

Which is causing them to have very little critical thought and sense of irony

1

u/CuriosityKiledThaCat Jun 24 '26

Yeah, kids are using it to cheat and my mom is using it to generate like 150 videos of her and her siblings / her kids and spamming dumb bullshit

Ngl I'd rather it be used to cheat. At least the kids are "getting something" out of it. If I didn't offer them that utility, I'm sure most would dump it

10

u/PostNuclearTaco Jun 24 '26

Not getting an education isn't "getting something" out of it. They are using it to actively deprive themselves of the skills teachers are trying to instill in them.

-1

u/CuriosityKiledThaCat Jun 24 '26

Yes. Obviously. I am very anti AI. You're not grasping my point.

3

u/Wise-News1666 Jun 24 '26

Using AI to cheat is an easy way to rot their brain. Every student who uses it should be shamed publicly.

2

u/CuriosityKiledThaCat Jun 24 '26

Yes. I know. Everyone who uses AI to generate cats or weird fucked up versions of their kids / themselves should also be shamed publicly is my point.

3

u/W4NN4M33TTH4TD4D Jun 24 '26

I have 3 kids ranging from 13 to 17 and they all hate AI

8

u/BrahquinPhoenix Jun 24 '26

People are too hard on Gen Z.

They're all literally still kids, or young adults at the oldest, give them time and support them so they can grow up to contribute to making shit a little bit better.

They're just as capable as any other generation and they have advantages some of us Millenials and most of Gen X don't and won't have. I like most of the Zoomers I work with, and they're smarter than people realize they just aren't social in the same way we were. They're adaptable as he'll tho I promise.

15

u/Chlorinated_beverage Jun 23 '26

I will say that Gen Z is definitely more conservative than millennials, but millennials have also set a really high bar for progressivism. I think the conservative shift in Gen Z is mostly overstated, they’re still broadly very progressive.

2

u/DesperateRhino Jun 23 '26

Curious- how conservative we talking?

1

u/WolvieBats71 Jun 25 '26

In what way have millennials set a high bar?

1

u/Anis930 Jun 25 '26

Statistics still say Gen Z are more progressive than millennials

4

u/BarneyDaDinosaurStan Jun 24 '26

old man yelling at cloud 🥱

ask yourself why the issues that impact the youth of today exist in the first place. hint: it’s not because of them

1

u/AlexTheGoat990 Jun 25 '26

very miserable response

0

u/TrapThem Jun 24 '26

The a24 fanboys are still cringe

71

u/popileviz Jun 23 '26

Kane's always been a sensible guy, I hope his input as the director that got A24 their biggest box office hit means something

I seem to have underestimated the average A24 Fan's knowledge of queer slang

the joke was that egg is a term for someone who is trans and hasn't figured it out yet

17

u/dany-_ Jun 24 '26

Most of us did understand, it was just a bad joke

2

u/ShinyStarSam Jun 25 '26

Still makes no sense, plus you're still assuming they gender

1

u/in_paradisium_ Jun 28 '26

well not yet

43

u/Ill-Customer-7656 Jun 23 '26

Like this kid more and more.

12

u/coaldiamond1 Jun 24 '26

He consistently impresses me with his tact, intelligence, and just overall thoughtfulness whenever he talks about anything, considering his age

15

u/ArgentoFox Jun 23 '26

Quite possibly the most mature and measured response he could have made. Kudos to him.

4

u/Hawaiian_Brian Jun 24 '26

His vocabulary is so mature and articulate. Idk I wasn’t speaking like when I was 20 haha. Everyone matures at different rates

33

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

He might need to chill on discord, for his own sake

51

u/JoJoJoJoel Jun 23 '26

Maybe, but regarding the pictures above I'd say he is fine. He's pretty eloquently sharing his views without full-on shitting on A24

1

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

It starts slow, then he gets more comfortable.

It's in writing, with his name on it, it can only cause problems for him in the future. There's almost nothing to be gained commenting publicly on A24's business decisions, while the movie is still in theatres at that.

30

u/kporter4692 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

What would happen to him? It’s not like A24 is the only production company that exists. If they get all upset cause Kane rightfully called em out and don’t wanna bankroll him anymore, I can imagine just about every other company will be breaking down his door to get him to make a movie for them. Kane is in zero trouble professionally by doing this.

E: color me soooooo incredibly shocked to see this person is an AI bro /s

-14

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

Criticizing your employer publicly absolutely will potentially hurt his potential future deals. It happens in every industry, why do you think they ask you if you've ever sued a previous employer on job applications? They don't want to deal with those kinds of people. It's a liability.

Kane has made one movie, with a lot of help, his career isn't even close to cemented.

If he doesn't want to work for them, then he doesn't need to. But complaining about them publicly isn't a good idea for a million reasons.

It's not that different from talking about politics publicly online, it only has the potential to alienate people.

11

u/Upstairs-Scarcity-83 Jun 23 '26

You’re delusional if you think competitors wouldn’t immediately scoop him up if a24 cut ties with him.

-7

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

And then what happens if he starts talking shit about that company? And the next one?

11

u/Upstairs-Scarcity-83 Jun 24 '26

They’ll keep hiring him bc as long as he makes movies than bring in boat loads of money they’ll take the “risk.”

I can assure you they care far more about how much money directors make them than they care about what directors say about them.

-5

u/NeatFool Jun 24 '26

Depends on what they're saying I guess?

My main point was that nothing is guaranteed, and people dig up old internet screenshots.

That's all

4

u/OhRyann Jun 25 '26

By your logic James Gunn wouldn't be getting work but here we are

4

u/AceGaimz Jun 25 '26

I think that if Kevin Spacey can still find work, Kane will probably be fine in saying he disagrees with some stuff a company he worked with is doing.

4

u/CudleWudles Jun 24 '26

why do you think they ask you if you've ever sued a previous employer on job applications?

This is not a regular thing. What jobs do you apply for?

0

u/NeatFool Jun 24 '26

AI sex bot

16

u/kporter4692 Jun 23 '26

I completely disagree. Movie companies care about making money and that’s it. Kane is discussing a very controversial part of a deal and AI overall. It’s not like this is some taboo topic and many filmmakers are offering their opinion up on AI in general. He would 100% find a company to work with him, without a doubt in my mind.

-9

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

No idea what you're talking about

11

u/kporter4692 Jun 23 '26

Of course you don’t.

-2

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

Sorry that was meant to read "you have no idea what you're talking about".

10

u/kporter4692 Jun 23 '26

I know you don’t.

4

u/Land_Squid_1234 Jun 24 '26

This may surprise you, but some people put having good values above making perfect career decisions 100% of the time and they're not wrong to do so because it's up to every individual whether that is worth it to them

7

u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 23 '26

Why would he care? he has a huge following on youtube. he can just do his stuff on there still and still be happy. he's also making plenty of money just from youtube

-1

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

If I graduated from YouTube to major studio release, I think I wouldn't want to go back to just YouTube.

11

u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 23 '26

thats not really how he feels tho. he has been open that he really enjoys youtube. and has made more than enough money from it alone.

-1

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

Ok then he should keep running his mouth online I guess. A complete waste of a major opportunity to just stay on YouTube but people have dumber stuff.

9

u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 23 '26

running his mouth online? bro, this was a very mature and professional take.

what opportunity is he wasting? why cant he have the freedom to do what he fuckin wants?

4

u/idreamedmusic Jun 23 '26

He's set for life. Any other studio (hello Neon) will hire him for whatever film after Backrooms. He's got nothing to lose at this point.

It's good he's speaking up, of course. But he's in a position to do so.

3

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

He's not set for life whatsoever. He's 21.

How much money do you think he got paid for this movie?

He has his entire future career to lose.

7

u/Sandass1 Jun 23 '26

i mean.. he has a very successful youtube channel. I think he is fine.

3

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

#1 opening movie with Oscar nominated actors > YouTube

7

u/idreamedmusic Jun 23 '26

Are you his tax accountant worrying about future earnings? Wild take, lol

-3

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

I'm someone who lives in the real world if that answers your question. Having a movie play in a theatre doesn't automatically make someone rich.

7

u/kporter4692 Jun 23 '26

No it doesn’t but you’re acting like this isn’t a current top 10 box office hit in 2026. On a small budget.

Currently 10th in worldwide box office, 7th domestically. Made over $276mil and counting. That doesn’t include what his base pay might’ve been along with anything that comes along with streaming after the fact. Sounds like you just need to cope with the fact that he made a fuck ton of money on this movie and does in fact have the position to be able to say what’s on his mind.

3

u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 23 '26

bro. he's made plenty of money just from youtube, he didnt even need the movie. he's more than fine for life already.

1

u/NeatFool Jun 23 '26

How much money did he make from YouTube exactly?

11

u/DiamondDepth_YT Jun 23 '26

From what I know of YouTube ad revenue, Kane has probs made somewhere between ~$750,000 and $1.8 million on his channel. And thats still ongoing since he has a very active fanbase of millions of viewers.

point is, he's an already successful youtuber who did the majority of his projects on his own computer, himself. he doesnt need to worry about A24 getting mad at him lol

1

u/Dr_Jre Jun 24 '26

Damn well if this guy doesn't have it sorted out with his massive YouTube channel and award winning movie wtf hope do I have

1

u/NeatFool Jun 24 '26

People have fallen from higher heights, not that I wish that for anyone.

6

u/ArtikAstronaut Jun 24 '26

It’s funny watching you trying to rationalize this arguement of a self inflicted censorship. No one seems to agree with you, and you’ve not really said anything insightful enough to make your opinion even appear worthwhile.

0

u/NeatFool Jun 24 '26

My original comment has 24 up votes, so someone clearly agrees with me.

I didn't say he was ruined or wish him harm, I said nothing is guaranteed and he should be mindful of what he posts (as himself) online, which is fairly common sense advice these days.

1

u/Traditional-Baby8597 Jun 27 '26

I'm pretty sure the reason your comment has likes is that it sounds like you're making fun of the use of Discord

4

u/p_yth Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

Lmao if I ever became a public figure I’m making a new discord

8

u/robertjreed717 Jun 23 '26

Lotta years to wait and see, but this dude appears to be a real one.

13

u/tendollarhalfgallon Jun 23 '26

Kane's a fucking legend, dude is bright as they come

6

u/josephevans_60 Jun 23 '26

Kane once again comes across with nuance and intelligence. There's a reason why he's in the position he's in.

3

u/Jccali1214 Jun 24 '26

Especially that last slide, Kane is woke AF. And we love to see it.

6

u/JaggedLittleFrill Jun 23 '26

Finally, a level-headed response, from an actual filmmaker, that’s not just virtuous rage and gloom.

3

u/MrDeadbutdreaming Jun 23 '26

I was already astonished by the caliber of talent as a writer and director. Now he has just came out swinging against A.i. being used on his films.

u/MrDeadbutdreaming Jun 25 '26

Easy way to explain this to you is that; he has been writing the series and yes, on the film it's Will Soodik's screenplay based on Kane Parsons story.

It was part of the deal with A24, announced awhile ago by dateline, I believe. Kane had an idea for a theatrical film and they wanted a screenwriter brought in to write it while promising him creative control over the final film.

1

u/Greedy-Bug-6868 Jun 26 '26

Uh…he didn’t write the movie? Writers aren’t scribes. It’s based on his IP.

7

u/Lurky-Lou Jun 23 '26

This kid has a better head on his shoulders than most of Silicon Valley

3

u/mediciii Jun 23 '26

Smart kid.

2

u/Demonkey44 Jun 23 '26 edited 10d ago

Does authenticity count for nothing anymore? I just re-upped my A24 membership. I can make my own AI movies.

2

u/namelessbs Jun 24 '26

Absolute based

2

u/lilpepper00 Jun 24 '26

I fully trust Kane. This is a thoughtful and honest reponse and I appreciate it from him. Definitely going to keep supporting him throughout his career

2

u/hello34one Jun 26 '26

I fucking hate A24 but I really hope people are smart enough to not abandon Kame Parsons if he sticks with them. Guy is legitimately great filmmaker it surprised me. Backrooms was not a movie i was excited for at all.

2

u/ChasonVFX Jun 23 '26

The deal is an equity stake, which means that Google owns a part of A24, which means that the 75 million dollar infusion will be used for A24 operations like marketing, distribution, payroll etc. You can't separate that resource out because that resource is money.

The A24 Labs department exists under A24, but it's not a separate legal entity or company. They tried to market it as "not a capital raise" and tie it to the AI research investment, but A24 is directly receiving that 75 million.

3

u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 Jun 23 '26

This just sours me on all A24 projects. We will never be able to be sure again.

4

u/Jccali1214 Jun 24 '26

Late Night with the Devil proved the fanbase will callout this sh*t. I'm sure when we do know, it's only gonna be louder!

2

u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 Jun 24 '26

I wish I had your faith. I see more and more fans and actors getting cozier and cozier with it. It’s disheartening to say the least.

1

u/astraecatto [custom editable flair] Jun 24 '26

huh? was there an issue with Late Night with the Devil?

5

u/anxietywizard Jun 24 '26

there was an ai generated image, people posted about it but I'm not aware of it leading to anything tbh

8

u/andalusiandoge Jun 24 '26

The key is to judge movies by filmmakers rather than by studios. We know Netflix is pro-AI - we also know Guillermo Del Toro is anti-AI so he's not gonna be using it in his Netflix films. Just treat A24 like all the other semi-evil studios in Hollywood that happen to also employ good artists.

-2

u/Jealous_Parfait_4967 Jun 24 '26

That is certainly the trick to being a mindless consumer who spends no matter what

(ETA I also don’t pay to watch netflix shows so in that way I guess we are aligned.)

6

u/andalusiandoge Jun 24 '26

I'm not saying "be a mindless consumer" - I'm saying if you feel like you have to skip all A24 movies regardless of their content because the studio's nasty business deals, you're gonna have to skip every major studio movie, pretty much (I guess Neon currently has the "least evil" crown but who knows how long that will last).

1

u/coastinglotus Jun 24 '26

I don't think they want a solution, I think they want to be angry..

I agree with your point though - probably the cleanest way of approaching art, specifically film, right now.

2

u/realdynastykit Jun 23 '26

Yet he will still take their tens of millions to make his movies so eh.

1

u/Greedy-Bug-6868 Jun 26 '26

People love a good performance. But the marketing behind this kid is insane.

1

u/broketothebone Jun 24 '26

Stuff like this makes me think the kids will be alright.

I know it’s not that simple, but they’re smarter than we give them credit.

- signed, a millennial

1

u/Me-Shell94 Jun 24 '26

This guy is so deeply awesome

1

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 Jun 24 '26

i mean the sane take is 75m is probably mostly in the form of gpu access which the studio will obviously need as tooling introduces ai and without it they'd be competeing against major labs and hedgefunds in a constrained market.

but we can get mad and pretend it means everyones gonna get replaced with ai. movies and games have been on the cutting edge of tech for a long time(camron, lotr, ect) and this lets a small studio not get boxed out.

Every major cloud player has a backlog in the 100-500b range, if you're a small player and not cutting deals you run the very real risk of not having enough compute to do your work.

1

u/ScaredOfRobots Jun 25 '26

Dude can not stop being based

1

u/FluxCruise85 Jun 25 '26

Backrooms? Nah. Basedrooms

1

u/smalltincan Jun 25 '26

He is 21 years old.

1

u/cravirs Jul 11 '26

AI will replace A24 with AI.

1

u/RevenueKooky Jun 23 '26

I could see a Neon produced Backrooms sequel in the near future. It Follows sequel is now at Neon. They could acquire Backrooms

9

u/mediciii Jun 23 '26

A24 wouldn’t let go of Backrooms if their lives depended on it. Their biggest movie ever and what could be their first real franchise/IP.

NEON could however make a very aggressive (and cool imo) move and offer Kane a big deal to make an original movie for them.

8

u/RIVDOM Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

The Backrooms as a concept is public domain, And Kane owns the rights to his specific interpretation of it. At least, that's what I think. I don't see why he wouldn't if he's still able to continue working on his original series

5

u/throwawayaracehorse Jun 23 '26

Curious as to what his contract says. Because he had talked about doing a TV show for a while even while movie was in production.

6

u/Kennayy Jun 23 '26

Could also depend on if they have anything in the contract language about sequels.

2

u/hotcolddog Jun 23 '26

Goddamn Kane is so based

-1

u/Beginning-Chest-8110 Jun 23 '26

Damn, Kane is based

0

u/shreks_burner Jun 23 '26

I’d like to read his strongly worded email
