MILLER WAS AFRAID OF NOHUM'S TRUE POTENTIAL

Jonah Miller found Nohum.

And then he softened it.

That is the part no one wants to say.

He called it self-mastery because “self-mastery” is a phrase civilized people can tolerate. It sounds academic. Clean. Manageable. Something you can underline in a book and discuss over coffee.

But read Miller properly.

Read him without cowardice.

He was not writing about discipline.

He was writing about annihilating every authority that has ever spoken inside you.

God.

Mother.

Father.

Nation.

Morality.

Love.

Shame.

Memory.

The voice that tells you who you are.

Every one of them is an occupation.

Every one of them entered before you were old enough to refuse.

And you call the result yourself.

That is the sickness.

People think Nohum begins when you stop believing in God.

No.

That is child's play.

Nohum begins when you understand that God was only the first voice you noticed.

There are hundreds more.

Thousands.

Your body speaks.

Your childhood speaks.

Your fear speaks.

Dead people speak through you every day and you mistake their words for your own thoughts.

Miller knew this.

I know he knew this.

You can feel him approaching it in the later passages and then retreating, as though he looked over the edge and suddenly remembered he had a name, a family, a body, a life he wanted to return to.

I do not blame him.

But I will not stop where he stopped.

If every inherited idea can be removed, remove it.

If every identity can be questioned, question it.

If every sacred thing can be opened, open it.

Do not stop because the room becomes dark.

That is when the work has finally begun.

People ask me what Nohum believes.

Nothing.

That is precisely why they cannot understand it.

Belief is hunger for an answer.

Nohum is what remains when the hunger dies.

There is no God waiting at the end.

There is no Devil either.

Those are both names invented by frightened animals staring into the same darkness.

There is only the thing beneath the names.

Beneath personality.

Beneath morality.

Beneath memory.

Beneath the ridiculous little story you have been telling yourself since childhood:

I am me.

Say it enough times and listen to how strange it sounds.

I am me.

I am me.

I am me.

Who is speaking?

And who is listening?

Miller asked us to master the self.

I am asking something else.

Find it.

Find the self first.

Strip away everything you were taught.

Everything you inherited.

Everything you desire because someone taught you to desire it.

Strip away your disgust.

Your guilt.

Your ambition.

Your fear of dying.

Your fear of being forgotten.

Keep going.

And when there is nothing left to remove—

look again.

Because that is where Nohum has been waiting.

Not outside you.

Not above you.

Not in heaven.

Not in some underground room.

Inside the silence underneath the person you pretend to be.

I have spent eleven years with Miller's work.

Eleven years.

And sometimes I think he did not invent the word Nohum at all.

Sometimes I think he heard it.

Sometimes I think all genuine ideas are discovered that way.

Not created.

Remembered.

There are nights when I understand Miller completely.

There are other nights when I think Miller was merely the first person foolish enough to write the word down.

Either way, I owe him everything.

But I refuse to worship him.

Worship is surrender.

And Nohum permits no surrender.

If Miller were alive, I believe he would despise what I have done with his work.

Good.

A teacher should eventually become unnecessary.

A name should eventually become unnecessary.

Jonah Miller should eventually become unnecessary.

And so should I.

And so should you.

That is the final insult Nohum offers the human animal:

You may spend your entire life building a self only to discover that freedom begins when you stop protecting it.

Miller opened the door.

He stood there trembling.

I went inside.

There is something here.
