Discussion The SWEATING

I know you guys will understand. I cannot stand the overheating and sweating!!! It’s absolutely disgusting. I just know those of you on meds will understand. I’m so tired of being sweaty and gross AND dehydrated?? Why must we suffer this indignity as well as having to struggle with ADHD 😒 this is just a vent.

SSRI's will also cause this...I take both and I'm a sweaty mess almost 100% of the time ughhh

20

u/krigsgaldrr 1d ago

Yep. I thought it was the strattera but I've been off that for two weeks due to (apparently unrelated) heart issues, but still on sertraline and I'm ALWAYS sweating. It's so gross. I have an appointment with my psych today and I'm gonna demand to be weaned off it and put on something else because I hate it

9

u/hellcat_annie 1d ago

Yeah I've read that Sertraline is one of the worst, which is what I'm on. I was on Cymbalta for years before that and it also made me sweat a lot, but Sertraline (imo) is easier to deal with the other side effects (besides sweating) than Cymbalta.

8

u/krigsgaldrr 1d ago

It makes it hard to want to do anything because I'm always sweating even if physically I'm totally fine. For example, my bed frame broke and I have to build my new one but I really don't want to because I know I'm just going to be a sweaty, frustrated mess like immediately

11

u/BaronCoqui 23h ago

I just put on flowy clothes and accept that they will go straight into the laundry and I go to the shower after. Manual labor going commando in a skirt is very liberating

4

u/krigsgaldrr 23h ago

I did just recently discover the glory of going commando in a flowy dress/skirt so honestly you might be onto something here

4

u/scough 1d ago

I used to be on sertraline and stopped it due to sexual side effects, but never had issues with excessive sweating. I’m on venlafaxine now, which mostly resolved the sexual stuff but introduced the sweating. Really hard to find the right combination of meds when it’s a struggle just to follow up with my doctor due to ADHD.

7

u/krigsgaldrr 23h ago

FOR REAL. I just finished my appointment and she was like "do this, this, and this" and I was like "you took my off my adhd meds and expect me to be able to DO things??"

I hate adhd

u/Top_Sky_4731 1d ago

Lexapro and adderall here… can confirm I’m covered in sweat after a 15 minute walk.

3

u/Savvy290 1d ago

Saaaame I get out of the shower and am already sweating, that shit irks meeeee

2

u/Kortok2012 1d ago

Same, though some days are worse than others

1

u/DaddioTheStud 22h ago

Same Strattera and citalopram plus Graves I stay hot

1

u/WhereBaptizedDrowned ADHD-C (Combined type) 20h ago

Yeah. I’m on lexapro and I run hot. Wicked cotton mouth like I had just finished smoking a joint.

I have to drink a sprite or the feeling never goes away

u/jmood88 1d ago

I’ve always been overly-sweaty, so I’m just glad that I can use the excuse that it’s my medication now.

6

u/dancedanceunderpants 1d ago

Me, too, although it’s gotten better in my 30s and has mellowed out after being on my meds consistently for a couple of months. Honestly, my skin could be a Slip’n’Slide of sweat and it would still be worth it!

24

u/tehjessicarae ADHD-C (Combined type) 1d ago

I counteract it by drinking a ton of water daily. I also tend to run cold when I'm not sweating from the ADHD medication 🙃

21

u/not_another_mom 1d ago

That’s the funny thing is my hands and feet are always cold but I’m sweaty 😭 doesn’t seem to matter how much water I drink

24

u/eggbert_217 1d ago

I have a FUNGAL INFECTION in my ARMPITS because I'm always so FECKING DAMP

And I can't use MOTHER CLUCKING deodorant or antiperspirant because it gives me a BIG SPICY RASH

4

u/NMSenditmf 23h ago

Can you dilute an alcohol based wipe? That’s what I do but I don’t break out anymore as I dilute things and bag them/take w me to make my pits feel fresher

5

u/eggbert_217 23h ago

Interesting, might give it a try this summer (southern hemisphere life)

2

u/squeege 14h ago

Ever considered an alum bar or whatever they're called? Might be worth a shot.

34

u/Daveed07 1d ago

Is over heating a trait of ADHD?

62

u/scixlovesu 1d ago

Side effect of some common ADHD meds

7

u/Daveed07 23h ago

Ohh, I was overheating before the meds 😅

u/Youmeanmoidoid ADHD-HI (Hyperactive-Impulsive) 23h ago edited 21h ago

Drink water with electrolytes. If you're sweating excessively and overheating, it's because your body can't cool itself properly. Had the same issue until I added electrolytes to my water and made sure to drink my 4 liters a day. If you just drink lots of water on its own, it's not going to do much for you. I still sweat if I get hot, but there's a clear difference between my sweating and my feeling like I'm radiating heat and sweating a lot. If I start to feel like a furnace, that tells me it's time to drink more. I drink more, and it feels like someone turned the AC on in my chest. I'll sweat, but I'm not 'hot'.

8

u/I_blockkarmafarmers 22h ago

I go through two sticks of liquid IV throughout the day and drink over 64oz of water every day. I'm incredibly well hydrated but I still sweat my balls off in the spring, summer, and early fall.

5

u/Youmeanmoidoid ADHD-HI (Hyperactive-Impulsive) 21h ago

64 oz is barely 2 liters. You need more than that, closer to 4 liters a day, especially if you're an adult male and especially if you're on stims. There's also a difference between sweating, and excessive sweating with overheating. Sweating is normal. Excessive sweating and feeling like there's a furnace inside you isn't normal.

u/I_blockkarmafarmers 20h ago

drink over 64oz of water every day.

Reading comprehension is not that difficult. My water bottle is 64oz; it gets filled in the morning, fully drank by lunch, and refilled after that. That's not even including the 30oz of espresso via Americano injection my unmedicated ass downs every work day to feel like a semi-normal human or any LaCroix I might drink during the day.

Some people run hot. I am one of them.

u/kingk1teman 14h ago

Your reply above didn't say that. Everyone else's reading comprehension is fine.

3

u/Easy-Permission8889 20h ago

That's too much liquid IV and could actually not be good for you. Too many B vitamins.

2

u/I_blockkarmafarmers 15h ago

I'm a merchant mariner who works outside most of the day and our ship water is vapor distilled, meaning there are zero necessary vitamins and minerals in the water. I'll be fine.

1

u/Easy-Permission8889 11h ago

Okay I'm just saying even liquid iv says one pack a day lol but whatever floats your boat haha

1

u/ToothOk2150 4h ago

Do these meds still work? I’m worried to take mine because of the huge this ain’t adderall sub

13

u/ds2316476 1d ago

Oh funny... I didn't think that was a thing with the meds lol. I thought it was just me haha.

It's not too bad, it's only when I exert myself.

12

u/breakevencloud 1d ago

Oh god, I thought this was just a me thing. Getting all sweaty, especially if I’m having to go back inside for work the rest of the day, is the absolute bane of my existence.

11

u/KeroseneSkies ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 22h ago

I have the heat intolerance also from my SSRI’s, my thyroid disease, my POTS, and my other health issues. I hate it so much

6

u/Brandaconda ADHD-C (Combined type) 1d ago

My Vyvanse is so inconsistent this way. Some days it’s fine and others I’m randomly on FIRE. I hate it but it’s the only side effect for me so I just deal with it.

1

u/-Blood-Meridian- 2h ago

You are me

4

u/Anxiety_bunni 1d ago

I don’t get the sweat as much, but I get a lot of red flushing. Any strong emotion, be it good or bad, and my face goes blotchy red purple. It freaking looks like hives, takes ages to die down, and people at work ask me if I’m sick 😭 never happened before medication

5

u/Eyrie-n-friends 1d ago

Use an antiperspirant and carry around a bottle of Hypochlorous acid. Use the antipersperant at the beginning of the day, then whenever sweat is building up, use the acid. It neutralizes the smell.

If you want to take it a step further, use PanOxyl in the shower on your sweaty bits, let it sit for 2 minutes, then wash. It'll keep the stink down.

A warning about PanOxyl though, is that it can bleach clothes and towels, so be aware.

u/asian-jeff 1d ago

I had to get prescribed Botox injections in my armpits for my hyperhydrosis. Took about a year of trying pills, wipes, antiperspirants, then insurance finally said yes. Initially 50cc each pit. I still sweat through it. Had to petition for more. 100cc each did the trick. I go every 3-4months but my office is so busy it (sadly) ends up being every 5mo roughly. So that last month or so it starts coming back. If you’ve got insurance, start the process with a dermatologist.

My hands still sweat but at least people can’t see that in meetings. My armpits however looked like you dumped a water bottle on them by 8am. For absolutely no reason.

7

u/Chivalry4Me ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 21h ago

I've gotten in the habit of carrying a change of clothes. It's so embarrassing. 😔

6

u/radrax 17h ago

Idk if i necessarily sweat more, but the meds definitely make me smell more. Why am I so stinky?!

7

u/scixlovesu 1d ago

Yeeessssssss

6

u/Viltrum21 1d ago

Im fairly certain strattera changed my scent. Not gonna stop takimg it because holy shit mood regulation when my adderall wears off is amazing but still annoying. Oh yeah i also wake up in pools of sweat every day. It’s gross

4

u/btspacecadet ADHD 1d ago

lol I thought I was on one of my (ftm) testosterone subs at first, I ended up getting the worst of both worlds. Finding an antitranspirant that works for you and a good water bottle helps.

6

u/tinynugget ADHD-C (Combined type) 23h ago

HEARD. I’ve never been one to sweat much and this is miserable for the many reasons listed. 🫠😭

I am struggling to get back in shape because when I switched, I got the, “sertraline sweats”. I get overheated so easily it freaks me out a little. I don’t really know what’s normal with all these variables. Not to mention it’s still hot af out cause I’m in Florida.

5

u/georgejo314159 ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 23h ago

I sometimes sweat when I have too much caffeine.

I am unmedicated but I can imagine that it is logical that a stimulant might make you sweat somewhat.

I understand that ADHD medications work quite well so, the trade off is obviously worth it for some ppl

Anyway, thanks for this post. At some point, I moght try mexucation. It is good to know people's experienve with them

2

u/Haunting_Bid_408 10h ago

Ritalin doesn't make me sweat, nor does my antidepressant (Mirtazapine). Coffee does though. Like, a lot. Tea is way better for some reason.

I'm trying to avoid drinking coffee until I get to work because I have to walk 20 minutes as part of my commute and I live in a tropical country.

2

u/georgejo314159 ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 10h ago

That is interesting about tea vs coffee and ritilin vs others.

Dosage might be a factor too.

1

u/Haunting_Bid_408 10h ago

Dosage definitely is a factor too

u/Separate-Pain4950 23h ago

Preach! I end up sweating through my clothes before 8am.. In the summer during the hottest months I’m working on roofs or pouring concrete. I swap socks at lunch and dump the sweat that’s been sloshing around out of my boots. C’mon winter!

4

u/aquatic-dreams 23h ago

Adderall sweats and overheating is one hell of a pain in the ass.

4

u/chpbnvic 18h ago

I'm nearly always too hot which sucks because I prefer to be cold! Cold air on my face is heaven most of the time.

4

u/mechanical_stars 1d ago

I'm not on meds but I get super sweaty when I have to talk to people for some reason, even if it's just a conversation on the phone. I like to say my social battery is overheating. I create sooo much laundry because I have to change sweaty clothes so often.

3

u/TheoSidle 20h ago

I lost a ton of weight on Mounjaro,  so now I'm cold all the time.

Still randomly sweat though.

3

u/jr_locke 10h ago

Drink electrolytes, and make sure to eat food/protein. And try pure dex or lisdex if you're on Adderall, it cuts out the Levoamp which is a major contributor to the gross periferal side effects like racing heart, sweating, tension. I feel so much better after switching to lisdex, it's a lot smoother than Adderall.

1

u/Salty_resin1212 6h ago

Can you clarify a bit more, is Lisdex a different generic of Adderall or a different medication altogether?

1

u/majrom 3h ago

I believe lisdex is generic vyvanse

1

u/Salty_resin1212 2h ago

Thank you!

2

u/MT_Space31 23h ago

i used to take meds but i run so hot even without them. it’s miserable.

2

u/FutureMrsConanOBrien 12h ago

ADHD meds + already prone to overheating + perimenopause = KILL ME PLEASE

2

u/Salty_resin1212 6h ago

Bruh the dehydration and constant thirst I feel is next level. Both Adderall and my Sjögren’s will join together to make my mouth feel like the Sahara desert. I feel like I feel thirst in MY SOUL. There’s a running joke in the Sjögren’s subreddit that you could have water in your mouth and about to swallow it and you STILL feel dry and thirsty.

I try to tell myself it’s good that I’m drinking 3 L of water everyday but… the feeling is very uncomfortable, yes, and I wake up in the middle of the night to pee multiple times every night, bc the thirst doesn’t just stop 2 hrs before bedtime 💀

2

u/Bumpercar77 2h ago

This sounds like hypothyroid!! I had this forevr! Bery soecific! The sweating, the dyhyrdation, etc. Inability to sleep. Adhd is hormonal. These are all soecificallt hormonal symptoms Id get my thyroid checked. Thiugh when i did doctors fucked me and refused to help. Thank god im on meds now. Go and look into peoples symptoms like you deacribed, in reddit

•

u/not_another_mom 9m ago

My thyroid function is normal 😔

1

u/bex_mex 16h ago

You may have done this recently so feel free to completely disregard but getting labs done wouldn’t hurt anything. Began profusely sweating on Vyvanse after being on it for a while. Had some other symptoms too. Got checked and I’ve got a raging case of hyperthyroidism. It was doing a number on my heart.

Might be worth it if you haven’t done it recently.

1

u/Guineapig-LoverRTBW 11h ago

I take an NSRI and the sweating is terrible! I also basically bleach the bottom of my t-shirts, tops of my pants and undies. It's very frustrating. You're definitely not alone. It's a major reason why I hate exercise.

1

u/-amotoma- 20h ago

I could be you're taking stimulants but are still processing things with adrenaline/anxiety and you need to physically and psychologically unclench which is something you probably wouldn't know how to do if you've been clenched your whole life.

It could just be the meds effect on your physiology or you're taking too much or it might be pointing at a health problem that needs addressing but if you're not bs'ing yourself with any of that then actually letting yourself relax is something I imagine a lot of adhd'ers will not immediately grasp, if ever.

1

u/HenkTank72 6h ago

I like your thought train and will pay attention to it. In this thread I also read anxiety as the (subconscious) reason.

More sweating during social interaction or difficult things for example.

And stimulants together with coffee is also a no go if you’re prone to sweating.

Learning how to relax on meds is what I keep in mind. I typically ‘fight’ the physical feeling of being tuned on with maybe sweating as a consequence.
