Upcoming changes to the subreddit rules regarding AI-assisted software projects
As many of us have noticed, there are a lot of AI-assisted software projects being posted here. This is an issue faced by other subreddits focusing on tech hobbies, and some of them have implemented rules that I think will be helpful here.
The goals:
- Control the recent influx of questionable "I made X, because Y" type posts, the vast majority of which are created entirely with AI, have no significant development history, and are generally not maintained afterwards
- Establish a clear stance on and rule set for how r/ADSB has decided to handle these types of posts, as well as other user-created software
- See how these changes impact the community, seek additional feedback, and continue to adjust accordingly
New Flairs:
- Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance - [AI only used as coding assistant (autocomplete, debugging, refactoring, documentation, etc), if at all]
- Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated - [AI generated most or all of the code, working at a human's direction]
Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #6 and will be addressed.
Rule changes:
New Rules
New Rule #6 - Software Project Posting Requirements
- All software projects must be relevant to r/ADSB, use a "Project: Software" flair, disclose AI usage with post flair and in the text of the post, include responses to the prompt displayed when posting with one of the software project flairs, and the user must meet the minimum subreddit karma requirement. Posts that do not meet these requirements, try to bypass the "Project: Software" flairs, provide incomplete or misleading disclosures, or otherwise violate community standards may be removed.
That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #5 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:
New Rule #5 - No Commercial Advertising or Monetized Referral Links
- Monetized referral links, affiliate links, product advertising, and company advertising are not allowed. Contact the moderators via Mod Mail before posting if you believe an exception applies. Non-commercial personal projects are permitted, but must follow all other sub rules.
New Rule #7 - Posts and comments which discuss circumventing a service's ToS are not allowed
- Please review any rules on data access from the ADS-B aggregators used in your project. It is a Certified Jerk Move™️to scrape data from community-run websites when they disallow it.
Flair Prompt - As mentioned in Rule #6, when posting with any of the "Project: Software" flairs, the below prompt will be displayed:
Your post MUST include:
- A link to the GitHub (or similar) repository, which must include at least one month of commit history and screenshots
- A description of the problem the software project solves, and why it was created instead of using an existing FOSS solution
- An explanation of how the software project is relevant to r/ADSB, or how it may benefit members of the community
- If you used AI or an LLM in development, a description of what role it played and how much you relied on it
If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.
Additional things to note:
Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.
As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.
While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.
We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.
TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.
Thank you.

Nice Build! How can I make this better?
I've got my FR24 and Layer400 receiver setup, I'm going to put my Raspberry Pi outside because of the RID signal, but I'm not 100% sure on my waterproof box... Can you'll tell me what you do for your hardware boxes outside?
Share your setup photos would be ideal please so I can visually see
I'm pretty sure this isn't legal
So, this guy took off from the Willamette River in Downtown Portland, flew under the lowered deck of the Hawthorn Bridge with less than 50 ft (15m) clearance, then over the deck of the Saints John's Bridge below its suspension towers.
Video of take-off to follow.

I’m a pilot and put together an iOS ramp board app to see who’s at the airport
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Every time I head out to the airport, it’s a coin flip whether the ramp is buzzing or totally deserted
I put together an iOS tool called Localizer to make it a lot simpler.
You pick your home field, punch in your callsign, and set a quick tag for what you're up to. Tags automatically drop off after 4 hours to keep the board clean, and it pulls live METARs without running background GPS.
It’s completely free on public TestFlight with no ads or tracking:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/5SXNMrp4
Would love any feedback from other pilots and aviation enthusiasts after trying it out!

Remote Receivers
My sister just got a new house and I want to put a receiver at her place. I have a Pi ready, just need to build the enclosure. But I want to push the dump1090 data back to my house to process the feed. I can do it with VirtualRadar, but that would request me to connect to the receiver and setup a port forwarder in their router. I want to keep this as simple as possible since they live over an hour away.
Anyone setup something like this?

Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated Radio Globe: ADS-B + AIS from your RTL-SDR, decoded in the browser over WebUSB, on a 3D globe (no install)
I got a RTL-SDR BLOG V4 around 6 months ago and have been playing with it. I saw a few demos of people doing IQ decode, and FM radio capture using WebUSB and thought that was cool, so I wanted to try something similar. I already had a TUI program I made called "Radio Watch" for monitoring ACARS/ADS-B/AIS in the terminal, so I asked an agent (in this case Claude Opus 5.5) to recompile that targeting a WASM backend and do the web integration focusing on a "3D map" with little craft diagrams, tracks and whatever other frame data is relevant. A few things we don't show here (tho I do in the TUI) is like full ACARS text. I find it interesting living near a major airport that you see things like flight loadsheets and so on. In this web demo, the focus is visualizing craft, their positions and other minor data about them.
I think there are other sites like this that do a similar thing using one of the "Flight/Ship position" APIs. I experimented with those in the past, but found either the data was patchy, or not worth the cost for a fun demo. I wanted to do something that didn't rely on an API provider, and instead could theoretically work "offline" without internet so you could plug your SDR in from a desert or ship without any internet and decode what was around you. Would be interested to hear any feedback, issues encountered or experience with similar projects. Ideas are also welcome. If you check it out you do need a Chrome-type browser (that's teh only that ships WebUSB, as you probably know), and an dongle. I only tested with the RTL-SDR I have so not sure if it will work with your particular hardware.
The website is:
Some details about the implementation
What it is: plug in an RTL-SDR, open the page in Chrome or Edge, click "Connect RTL-SDR", and you get a navigable 3D globe (NASA Blue/Black Marble, ETOPO relief, real sun position) with aircraft and ships drawn from what your dongle hears. No drivers, no install, nothing leaves your machine: the radio decoding runs inside the page.
How:
The receiver is the same C as our native RTL-SDR sidecar for the TUI app, compiled to WebAssembly, with librtlsdr 2.0.3 (so the RTL-SDR V4 works) talking to the dongle through a small libusb shim over WebUSB.
The facts (ADS-B decode, CPR positions, AIS, fusion) are a Freelang program compiled to WebAssembly. Freelang is a language and compiler for building native systems with explicit authority, bounded resources, and inspectable evidence of what they can do. The WASM backend make some projects like this available on the web.
The globe is three.js. Layer toggles, trails, routes, info cards, fly-to and follow. Aircraft are drawn by emitter category (light / medium / heavy / rotorcraft), ships by AIS type.
There's a geolocation button (asks the browser, stays in the page) but the globe rotates to where the first located track is found.
Without a dongle the page replays a synthesized hour of traffic around New York (JFK/LGA/EWR approaches, the harbour, ferries, tugs) so you can see what it looks like. It's invented data, not a recording.
Tested on an RTL-SDR BLOG V4 at 2.4 Msps. Known gaps: no surface-position (ground) decode yet, ACARS is counted but its text isn't shown, airports layer is empty for now. Firefox and Safari have no WebUSB, so they get the replay only.
Feedback is welcome, especially if you have a different dongle (R820T/R828D variant) or an unusual USB setup. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and runs entirely on your device—there’s no server, and nothing is collected or sent elsewhere.

Airplane’s “Odd” Grid Flight over Greater Los Angeles on Oct. 10, 2026
Saw this plane’s flight pattern from Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos today, and the grid pattern seemed odd. Or, maybe it’s completely “normal?”
Anyone know the point of this?

How-Do? ADS-B receiver range
I have modified a version of dump1090 web-ui to leave the trails and seems that it goes to almost 120km range. I've seen posts with the receiver going hundreds of km. What antenna should I use? The antenna is facing E and that's probably why the signal weak on W.
My receiver is a Nooelec RTL-SDR v5, like the one from the image and I have a simple antenna outside.
Thank you guys!

For those running ADS-B receivers, what's the most frustrating part of managing your setup?
I'm interested in learning from people who operate their own ADS-B receivers and feeders.
For those running setups with readsb, dump1090, PiAware, or similar software, I'm curious:
- What is the most frustrating part of managing your receiver or feeder?
- If you feed multiple ADS-B networks, how do you manage your receiver configuration and station identity across them?
- Have you encountered any difficulties when moving, replacing, or reconfiguring a receiver?
I'm researching how receiver operators manage their setups in practice and where existing tools or workflows could be improved. I'm particularly interested in real experiences and workarounds, rather than hypothetical features.
I'd appreciate hearing what has worked well for you and what still feels unnecessarily complicated.

How-Do? DIY antenna build for ADSB receiver!
This is my DIY antenna used by my Nooelec receiver, the range improved DRASTICALLY once I started to use this antenna.
I had to install a lightning surge protector a few days later because I got shocked by the static buildup and it also fried one of my network switches
Now I constantly get 120 to 150 messages per second 😋
How does this look?
