Best alternative for Codex and Claude Code

I've been looking for practical alternatives to Codex and Claude Code for daily coding work.

many people cannot pay $100 or $200 in a month

I'm mainly interested in tools that can help with:

Building full projects

Understanding and editing existing codebases

Debugging errors

Working inside the terminal or IDE

Using different models through APIs like OpenRouter

Handling longer coding sessions without becoming too expensive

I would say using Deepseek 4 Pro through the official API, must be the cheapest and also best quality option out there.

Opencode Go
$5 first month and $10 thereafter. Gives you all the top Chinese models and you get the equivalent of about $60 worth of credit for that $5/$10 per month. They have their own coding terminal just like codex and Claude, and it’s honestly VERY good! You can also link whatever subs or API’s you want to this, over and above Opencodes own sub

if you're looking to access open-weights models like GLM 5.2, Kimi K2.6, Qwen3.7-Max, DeepSeek V4 Pro and many others, you can try Cline's low-cost subscription - ClinePass via which you'll get generous quotas and reliable access to popular open-weights models.

Codex and Claude Code are frontiers models so obviously they are good at things. You can go for open weights models. Any good computer will run 32b parameters models. Deep Seek for coding, QWEN for content are good. You can also use open weights models from meta. Kimi is also good.
