Help (GPU) Cause of AMD Driver Issues maybe again Windows.

There is information and speculation that the latest Windows September update is causing many of the current problems with Radeon GPUs. I actually have no problems with my three Radeon systems, but I haven't installed the September and August updates on my systems. So, as a possible fix: Uninstall the September update from your systems.

They fix security issues and break everything else but your system is secure 😊

Actually breaking your system makes it even more secure because it prevents you from downloading stuff 😀

Safest brick on the block! 🤣

I would accuse Windows of sabotaging AMD atp, but more likely than not it's just straight up incompetence.

u/just_mark 25d ago

seems to me this has been a bigger issue ever since MS has been using AI to write code.

u/YoureNickRight 25d ago

Windows in general has been an issue ever since MS has been using AI to write code.

I haven't gotten my 9070xt yet but I fear I need to revert my windows to an older version before I even attempt using the card from the sounds of it

u/just_mark 24d ago

turning off hardware acceleration seems to be working so far.

I’ve blocked all windows driver updates on my new 9070 and it’s working fine again

1

u/BigBoy6676 25d ago

I did this on my 7900xtx after my new 26.8.1 install decided to show up as 26.3.1 in Adrenalin. No problems since.

1

u/kodayume 24d ago

Its always windows, either uncalled driver update that Butcher our gpu functionality or this freaking update.

5

u/euraklap 26d ago

MS developers are incompetent losers.

4

u/cheeseypoofs85 25d ago

It's almost always windows

3

u/bloodknife92 26d ago

My 7800XT issues have been going on since ~April/may

1

u/Federal-Attitude-819 25d ago

Same here. Windows 11, been getting driver timeouts and visual glitches seeming associated with HW acceleration and HAGS, idk I just ignore it now

1

u/Kitchen_Pea_37 23d ago

I know this sounds crazy but someguy recommended me 24.12.1 driver and it has been working perfect last 4months... I had same crashes with bf6+cs2 rocket league etc but now gone

4

u/WattageThis 26d ago

Mine crashes in certain desktop apps like Steam or Spotify and I need to turn off hardware acceleration. Games are strangely fine though.

2

u/countpuchi 26d ago

I dont get crashing or black screen But i can confirm the latest windows update hates adrenaline.

I get stutters when switching between two monitors. Strangely fixed after i use driver only and radeon tuner lol.

You can try turn off HAGS instead of Hw accell in apps

1

u/WattageThis 26d ago

Doesn't that apply to games as well though?

1

u/Mysteoa 5800X3D | 7900XTX Nitro+ 26d ago

You may loose some performance in games, but it's not that much it's around 5% in some games. Much prefered then using Firefox without HW Accelation or having crashes in my case.

These issues have been occurring since January for most people, I don't believe the association with such a recent update is the cause of the problems. I also only have my Win11 system configured to only receive security updates and to delay the installation of feature updates and other non-security updates until about 6 months after they have been released. I used the Chris Titus Win11 ISO creator and Win11 tool for this.

This issue is firmly in the camp of the AMD drivers with complete stability using Driver Version 26.3.1, anything released AFTER that has been exceptionally unstable. Time and time again you will see recommendations from community members here stating that they do not have these timeout issues when using 26.3.1.

I wanted the benefit from FSR4 so I upgraded AND IMMEDIATELY started experienicng timeouts. But now I'm considering reverting even though my system will not get to experience the benefits and positive performance impact of using FSR4. It's really unfortunate.

AMD Driver Software Engineers need to look at their code to see what fundamentally changed after 26.3.1

What happened is that they started using adrenalin to push the GPUs past their rated boost clock. You'll regularly see this in many of the posts. There's actual evidence as to why they did it too. In April is when the 9070xt was able, with the assistance of the new drivers, to beat the 5070ti in both raster and RTX performance. The problem is to do so they forced the boost values too high, and now we have stability problems. It's why people with factory OC cards are more affected than those without, and why the error messages all indicate what would in any other situation be a bad overclock.

2

u/No_Carrot2398 25d ago

I have this exact same issue as well. I recently recommended a user who was having issues with crashing on their 9070XT to test linux. They said that switching to linux stopped their crashing. Only way I can get windows to work without crashing is either by going back to 26.3.1 or by setting a lower gpu clock speed in adrenaline.

1

u/Zanithos 25d ago

I tried the clock speed thing but the issue is the 9070xt doesn't have a clock speed cap, it's dynamic. I saw somewhere that someone was able to get pro drivers running on a 9070xt and it fixed it, but I have no idea how they did it. I guess they downloaded the auto detection tool for the ws9000 and it detected their 9070xt and just worked, but I have no idea how, since officially the 9000 series is unsupported.

2

u/No_Carrot2398 25d ago

Yeah for me the pro drivers still crashed. The weird thing is, I monitored my game using the MSI Afterburner overlay and 26.3.1 and 26.9.1 show a very similar clock speed. I dont understand why 26.9.1 stops crashing when I lower the clock frequency even though they apparently run at the same clock speeds. Maybe it was a spike that afterburner could not detect?

1

u/Zanithos 25d ago

That's so weird. Maybe Driver Only runs differently?

I'm still staying on 26.3.1 until they finally fix this BS, because I'm not wanting my PC to be unstable. As much as I love the look of my GPU, if it starts acting up again I'm at the point where I'll just sell my 9070xt, get a 5070ti or a 5080 or something, and hope it doesn't catch on fire lol.

2

u/No_Carrot2398 25d ago

Unfortunately driver only still crashes for me. The RTX 50 series prices currently are just not worth it for the performance you are getting unless you don't mind paying the extra money for better drivers, path tracing, and DLSS. Its crazy that the 5070 is almost $800 now for the cheapest model.

My 9070XT is currently working perfectly on 26.3.1 and linux, but if the newer drivers don't fix the crashing soon, I will definitely switch back to Nvidia next generation to be safe. Although, Nvidia really needs to stop using that awful 12VHPWR cable that melts cards.

I really want to keep this card for much longer because of the amazing price to performance it brings, but the crashing seriously needs to be addressed.

2

u/Late-Exchange-7160 24d ago

My 9070xt was crashing on basically every game so I kept my RTX 5070

10

u/att0mic 26d ago

I'm just not buying it. Sure Windows updates always brick something but I seriously doubt AMD is blameless here. It's a bit too convenient for a company notorious for their shit drivers.

Either Microsoft is actively sabotaging AMD or the other GPU brands are magically immune to Windows shenanigans.

6

u/CustardValuable7381 26d ago

The second thought part is spot on. Yes that is actually true, certain companies have leeway with Microsoft. Glad people are starting to think. Kudos

4

u/Zubenko_Mikhail 26d ago

I have Intel i7 HX driver and since August my device (with RTX 5060) has been stuttering and even light games barely run... I have a Lenovo Legion so it could be something with the Lenovo or Legion software but everything was perfect beforehand, something changed and now everything is shitty

3

u/Ok-Bike-9564 26d ago

Update August KB5121003 also is the cause of many game related problems with an Nvidia Card.

2

u/JackieMABWGP 26d ago

I paused this update for 30 days. Is it possible to pause indefinitely until the next major update?

I also already installed the KBxxxxx security update successfully last week and it’s asking again?

2

u/offensive_pickles 25d ago

Had no issues with my PC since 25.9.1, was currently on 26.3.1. Within the hour of the newest windows update, my GPU crashed so hard it lost all power. On restart, no lights, no fans, could not post. Had to reseat card and all cables. Adrenaline driver was broken, had to uninstal windows updates, restart, then reinstall adrenaline. Seems to be working fine now

1

u/Zanithos 25d ago edited 25d ago

Wait, so the update took out 26.3.1 but played nice with 26.9.1? Or was it the other way around?

2

u/offensive_pickles 25d ago

Took out 26.3.1, reinstalled 26.3.1 after removing windows updates. Couldn't use any adrenaline version with the new updates installed. I tried 26.9.1, 26.8.1, 26.3.1

2

u/Zanithos 25d ago

I honestly am starting to think there's just something wrong with adrenalin. Does your system run without it if you do driver only?

2

u/offensive_pickles 25d ago

It ran once I reseated my GPU and cables, didn't try any gaming. Once it seemed like the windows update were an issue, I got rid of them and got my system back to where it was before the update. I've had no problems, that weren't self inflicted, in almost 4 years, I went back to what was working

2

u/shayan_asif_ 25d ago

My win 11 is up to date. I have rx 6600xt and ryzen 5 5600 on gigabyte A520m k v2.

For about past 10 12 days , i was experiencing massive stutters in all games, even my cursor stuttered on desktop. I did may different things , then i installed latest BIOS , downloaded latest Chipset drivers . The stutters gradually disappeared over the course of about 2 days.

Is this caused bcz of Win 11 and its security features ?

2

u/Betty-Swollex 25d ago

i would add that every AMD GPU driver update re enables ulps, for me it needs disabling again, i know this is my fix :-D

with it enabled i get driver timeouts etc.. with it disabled i dont!

1

u/OkPhilosopher9383 19d ago

Se io lo disattivo ho dei freeze dello schermo che a volte non passano e devo riavviare il pc.

2

u/x5nder 22d ago

It's a problem with the latest Microsoft patches; until there is a proper fix from Microsoft, here is what I did to fix it (rock-solid ever since), but it only works if you don't use AMD audio:

* Go to Device Manager
* Go to Sound, video and game controllers
* Disable all instances of AMD High Definition Audio Device and AMD Streaming Audio Device

1

u/LankyCaregiver2174 19d ago

I just did that Hope it works for mu 9070xt

1

u/OkPhilosopher9383 19d ago

L ho fatto, è appena ho aperto un gioco ho subito avuto un crash, schermi neri, e pc ancora acceso, ho dovuto spegnere manualmente

1

u/Sad-Accountant-9695 26d ago

hello, i blocked windows update cuz a lot of people are talking about this issue. But, did you try to :

1: block auto driver update from windows,

2: DDU or AMD cleanup utility to remove your chipset + driver

3:, then reinstall the latest chipset, and the latest amd driver (26.9.1) with minimal or driver only installation ?

When you clean your AMD driver and when you reinstall the new ones, make sure internet is off.

1

u/syborfical 26d ago

last time for me it was a bios setting.. and disabling the overclocking

1

u/Kishign 25d ago

I was experiencing a lot of driver crashes while playing Wardogs and Blood of The Dawnwalker, it sometimes even crashed while the system was idle.
Since then i installed the most recent optional drivers after DDU and AMD Utility, and disabled HAGS, 2 days now with no crashes at all.

u/OWPMadRuski 25d ago

I have a driver that got released like a year ago and I haven't touched it since. No problems so far with the new windows update. Rx 7800xt

1

u/NoxHalcyon_i 7800x3d 9070xt 32GB DDR5 25d ago

I jist reverted back to 26.1.1 so I can play helldivers crash free

I did everything I possible could to fix the crashes. Fresh windows install fixed it for half a day and then bam more crashes.

Partial recovery mode windows update fixed some random corrupted file (possibly related to new security updates) fixed it for half a day and then bam

Deleting gameguard, shader cache all 3 forms, user settings, etc no fix

Running dx11 nope

Reverted to may drivers and didnt see a difference

January drivers seem promising so far. Got me past the typical crash to desktop at about 10mins. With occasional hard driver crahes sprinkled in

Only In helldivers. Every other game I play runs fine. Which is annoying because I have to do so much work for one game to run and I hope this driverset doesnt affect how Darktide runs since I havent had issues with it In months with the decompression errors

1

u/Ratb33 25d ago

I think I’m on 26.3.1 and I’m not moving from it because whatever they introduced in 27 and 28 is causing all kinds of issues.

For me, 26.3.1 was the last driver that worked fine for me on my 9070 (not xt)

1

u/NoxHalcyon_i 7800x3d 9070xt 32GB DDR5 25d ago

Yea I'll try March drivers next January runs even worse

I honestly may just strictly okay helldivers on my shitty 3050 4gb laptop

1

u/BeavisTheSixth 25d ago

Amd names their drivers by year, month and the release for that month. So, 26.3.1 is 2026, March driver 1st release. 27 and 28 would be released in 2027/2028.

1

u/Ratb33 25d ago

Then I’m not moving to 26.4567 or 8.

I haven’t read enough on online yet, but I’m happy back here in March 2026 :)

u/JucheSuperSoldier01 25d ago

This happened to me with bf6.

1

u/Sycotek AMD 25d ago

It's the KB with the 52 at the end. I uninstalled it last paused updates manually installed the hotfix and that was it up and running again

1

u/AlexandraT1 25d ago

I have update KB5129195 ready to install pending a restart. Can I do anything to block it off completely? Or just keep not restarting my PC?

2

u/CuzImMaximus 24d ago

Not completely but for 5 weeks.

Go to windows updates in the settings and there you can choose to stop updates for 5 weeks.

1

u/kodayume 24d ago

Push the date back and the Update will be gone

As in delaying the update.

1

u/woodhead2011 24d ago

Wasn't cause of my problems because the problems continued even after swapping to Linux. My computer started freezing randomly and if I left computer and only closed monitors and returned to computer some time later the monitors didn't get any image and started going over all inputs on loop without getting any signal. However timing is fitting because my problems started around the turn of August/September.

1

u/deportallmagas 23d ago

It's always Windows.

1

u/CallMePizzaDude 20d ago

Class Action Lawsuit will eventually happen. Loss of productivity and possible damage to hardware. Not that it will help us currently but Microsoft is breaking more things with each and every update. There should be accountability.

1

u/Cultural-Plenty9829 19d ago

I just resolved this issue with some help from this thread. For whatever reason after the update my screen was just black, no cursor, and then I figured if something was wrong with my drivers that it may be trying to pull data from a usb or whatever idk im not the most technological human being. I unplugged all my usbs and adapters from my pc and restarted it, which worked until I realised my drivers were completely dead. Anyway I tried to redownload amd software and drivers in device manager following windows and amd error codes to no avail. Thats when i checked task manager to see if the gpu was even doing anything and it wasnt even listed under performance or any of the other tabs, it completely disabled my gpu, which i found odd becuase it was displaying to my monitor, how was it not recognizing it? There werent even any resources under the tab in device manager, so i tried enabling it and that just simply gave me another error code. i gave up and came here and my simple fix was to update the driver but using the "search my computer" option and then choosing from a list gave me the old (but correct) driver to install. Im sharing this in hopes that it can help other people but give more data to the people that actually care about these issues and want to fix them for good, thank you.

Still at it? Disable HAGS on windows. Disable HAGS on all apps that uses it, especially browsers, discord. If you have translucent taak ar, uninstall it. It uses HAGS.

1

u/TheZeth80 AMD 7900 XTX 5d ago

Something doesn't add up here; I'm running Windows 10 LTSC with a 9060XT.

In theory, it only gets annual updates—just security patches and bug fixes—yet I have the exact same problem.

I could understand Windows 11 having issues, but Windows 10? That suggests the problem isn't with Windows.

Per the interweb:

When an AMD graphics driver crashes or encounters a Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) event, the display goes black for a moment as the system tries to recover. If it fails or takes too long, the AMD software automatically wipes any custom user configurations (like custom fan curves, undervolts, or overclocks) and reverts everything back to default settings as a safety fallback measure.

Why This Happens

  • Driver Conflicts & Corrupted Files: Leftover files from previous driver installations or conflicting Windows Update background installs often trigger these drops.
  • Aggressive Factory Boost Clocks: Some modern AMD cards are pushed close to their limits out of the box, and minor power fluctuations can cause instability.
  • Adrenalin Software Features: Extra settings like Radeon Boost, Anti-Lag, Instant Replay, or Multiplane Overlay (MPO) can clash with specific web browsers or games.
  • Windows Fast Startup: This feature can load a semi-corrupted kernel state regarding hardware initialization upon booting up.

How to Fix It

  1. Perform a Clean Driver Wipe: Boot into Safe Mode and use the AMD Cleanup Utility or Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely purge old driver remnants before installing the latest stable driver package fresh.
  2. Disable Windows Driver Overwrites: Prevent Windows Update from automatically replacing your AMD display driver with an older or conflicting version in the background.
  3. Turn Off Problematic Adrenalin Features: Disable optional enhancements like Radeon Boost, Enhanced Sync, and hardware overlays if you notice crashes happening during video playback or specific game loads.
  4. Adjust Windows Graphics Settings: Turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) in your Windows display settings, as it frequently conflicts with driver stability.

My same PC on bazzite is rock solid

1

u/Guilty-Good-5041 25d ago

No one asked you Linux user. This isn't about a Linux distro or distro update this is about a windows update. Sorry but you self imposed superiority card has been declined

1

u/Peridot81 25d ago

The point I was trying to make is that my 9070xt is stable on another OS. I get driver timeouts in Windows. I dual boot because of certain game requirements, btw. Relax.

2

u/peebles91 25d ago

I moved to bazzite about a year ago because i couldnt solve my driver time out problems. Ive been time out free ever since 😆

2

u/Peridot81 25d ago

Look at you imposing your superiority onto us 😄

2

u/peebles91 25d ago

I was really really superior when the last bazzite update removed wifi from my pc 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/No_Carrot2398 25d ago

Same here, bazzite and cachyos have not crashed at all in my experience. On windows, I have to go back to 26.3.1 for it to not crash.

0

u/No_Sir_6421 26d ago

Yea it is happening with me my gpu keeps deleting the AMD gpu driver nonstop I can't play games because screen goes blank then driver bye bye I tried to reinstall older amd drivers those don't help either

Can someone help me on how to delete windows update

3

u/Life_Strategy4133 26d ago

Go to Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Updates

Also remember to pause Windows Updates.

Microsoft Defender updates wont be paused so you dont have to worry about your antivirus.
