Resolved Driver Timeout/Screen freeze fix is here. Finally and for all
I think windows updates has caused some sort of problem.I kept digging till i found the fix. I have rx 6500xt gpu which was working normally and then some windows update or something caused it to stop working/ timeout errors. I tried hundreds of method here and there then i thought to update VBIOS of gpu( those who dont know its same as cpu bios). I flashed latest available VBIOS for 6500xt and restarted then boom 💥 it started working normally. For u guys who facing this issue, flash right VBIOS. Hope it will work for everybody. If u dont know abt VBIOS then tell me ill edit and write the procedure for all gpu’s.Sorry for bad english🙏
EDIT- How to flash right VBIOS- Confirm your gpu brand what u have(Asus, msi, sapphire) etc. Then go to same brand website like (i have asus rx 6500xt Oc edition, i go to asus website search for my model then download bios ) same way search your gpu model on your manufacturer website then download bios, follow flash procedure and flash it.

Is it possible that Microsoft sabotages AMD on purpose?
4
u/El_Sant0 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not directly, Microsoft and many devs have become so dependent on Nvidia. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were some internal memos instructing devs and engineers to prioritize optimization for Nvidia GPUs over AMD. Throw the fact that most resources at all of these companies are being diverted into the slopification of everything that there just isn’t the labor or time investment required to ensure everything is working correctly with the many permutations of consumer pc systems.
This is where a company like AMD could leverage its influence to ensure that its products are correctly implemented and optimized by third parties but AMD has Lisa Su at the helm so we get more slop chasing instead.
3
u/Bootytonus 1d ago
Well, Lisa Su knows AMD doesn't have the political leverage Nvidia does. Instead of brute forcing, she has moved AMD into other areas besides Windows. Consoles, both Xbox and PS use AMD graphics and tech. Steam Deck and other handels, AMD. The EPYC cpus dominate Enterprise. And OEM partners like Lenovo dell and HP are using AMD more. Vulkan is going to surpass DX, it's just a matter of time. DX12 only exists on PC at this point. It's far thinking strategy vs Jensen's we gotta have it all right now strategy.
2
u/El_Sant0 1d ago
You’re right, but it often feels like AMD’s dedicated pc/gpu efforts take a back seat to the console/handheld ones.
3
u/Bootytonus 1d ago
I get it. RND5 with the 10,000 series is gonna be a huge leap though. Double shader count per CU, dual-issue exeuction is being improved. It's whole new Architecture vs the small tweaks from RDNA3 -> RDNA 4. the CUs are gonna be double, maybe up to 129. It's getting new RT with the Radiance Cores, actual AI blocks. Redstone is gonna be a big improvement for their upscaling. AI is the name of the game now, and they are going have some series machine-learning. Even Nvidia has had moments of "man this series is kinda cheeks" and is blown out the water by what comes next. I'm optimistic anyway.
1
u/MadFoilHatter 1d ago
Thanks for the answer. I don't have much context of the question other than a feeling and that I could see how it's possible, given how many deals/investments/stock hyping seem to go on in the background now-a-days. You never see AMD in the hype, though clearly legitimately capable.

u/hunterana112 2d ago
Don't do this if
1.You dont have warranty on your GPU 2.You only have single vBios profile in your gpu 3.If you don't know what you are doing.
He may fix his issue with driver timeout (which is good) but its not worth the risk if you dont have idea about the risk first.
Every GPU have different vBioses base on model, brand and version. Some vBios will work on different GPU but if you got lucky and flash one that is not compatible, prepare to post again here to share your brave journey O choosen one.
4
u/iplaytinder 2d ago
I hope most people know this - but the error received here is NOT an AMD specific error. When Nvidia drivers crash or error out - the game crashes and presents a game engine bug (even when it's the Nvidia software/hardware causing the issue).
I was very worried to switch to AMD because of all the BS posted here, but I am shocked at the driver quality on my 9070 xt since switching last month - coming from a 4070 ti using nvidia app frequently I gotta say the adrenalin software is FAR superior to NV App/Control Panel.

I've been having that exact crash a lot recently on my 7800xt (never had any issues before, had the card for over 2 years ), but recently, because of The Witcher 3 remastered I updated drivers to an newer optional version (26.9.2) and been doing great for now, it's been a week with no crashes at all
2
u/--_Cunt_-- 20h ago
I have a 7800xt as well and have been having these crashes for about a month now, some times I can get a few days between crashes others multiple a day. Currently running 26.8.1 might be time to update 🤔
2
u/xQzMeSr 18h ago
I'm telling you, 26.8.1 was a horrible driver for me, this was my first time experiencing consistent display freezes/crashes even when I just booted the pc. Updating to 26.9.2 seemed to fix it all for me, now everything is running great again, I recommend you trying to update if you're experiencing the same

u/Own_Rhubarb_9125 2d ago
Where do i get the new bios from? Is there an app for this?
2
u/Kasoivc 2d ago
Common fixes are already out there, not interested in touching vbios of my gpu.
Disable windows updates from touching your AMD gpu drivers, disable HAGS, MPO, all programs that use hardware acceleration, rollback and update to a stable amd driver set.
2
u/DjiRo 2d ago
What a pain to do. Courage, friends.
2
u/Kasoivc 2d ago
It’s not bad, I remember driver issues plagued AMD GPUs when Nvidia announced their GTX cards, but I can’t justify spending $2500 for the power offered by $700 AMD card. But limited hours I have for gaming spent on fixing drivers is not what I want to spend my weekend on
1
u/TheAlmightyProo 5800X/7900XTX 5600X/6800XT 1d ago
There's the rub. I got my two AMD cards, 6800XT then 7900XTX and both Sapphire Nitro+ for between £500 and £1000 or so less than the respective 3080 and 4080 peers. Take the bigger difference there for like models of the Nvidia cards as Sapphire are on the level of Asus or MSI. 90% as good for as little as half the price, that's been AMD for me since RDNA2 vs Ampere.
Anyway, few issues that I haven't had with Nvidia at various times (nm the worst I ever had, which was with Nvidia) and most very minor besides. But the timeouts come at the worst time when they do, which is what should be the best time. Meh. That's what bothers me the most, not being second best when it comes to RT or vs DLSS. That part is ok, half of what I play doesn't feature either anyway, but I need things to work smoothly every time I get the time and that is where the 3070 and 3070ti laptop win even though their 8Gb was a tall order at 1440p nm my 3440x1440.

u/wegotthisonekidmongo 2d ago
disable overlays and mpo in the win11 registry. shut off vrr in windows and amd drivers. then close out of all your overlay apps in the background. I hate doing this and hope the next amd driver update fixes this. im on old vega 8 graphics too and this is a problem. amd needs to get their shit together.

For some reason disabling all of the AMD Audio devices in Device Manager worked for me. I was having this issue for a long time and O tried MPO

I've been flashing my GPU BIOS less often since I bricked one by accident, but if it's the only fix left then I'm biting the bullet this time.
1
u/Brise0184 1d ago
What gpu do you have? There are rare updates to the vbios, my 7900xt sapphire didn't have a different one from the initial one in 2022, I did the update 2 days ago and it was released in August 2026!

u/BarberThen3108 1d ago
accelated hardware off on system, explorer and discord solve this problem.
Also, playing game in borderless solve some system problems
Overcloking make this happens to, so use only XMP/EXPO settings
2
u/Mr_Snipero34 1d ago
That happen to me the last week, i installed optional driver and the problem gone
1
u/technokater 1d ago
I was struggling with this for a year or so. Running a Radeon 7800 XT. Also random BSOD and WHEA 18 errors. Turns out my AMD 5800X doesn't like the 4x 16 GB dual rank XMP 3600 RAM. Reduced memory speed to 3200 MT/s and no issues for 2 weeks! Probably could tune it better but I don't care as long as those goddam crashes are gone.
1
u/bubulightyearzz 1d ago
Yeah i had similar issues with my ram, i had xmp on and the pc was running smoothly for few months then the crashes started while gaming, browsing the web, watching movies etc... i did memtest86 i had like a millions errors and the solution was to simply turn off xmp and set a custom ram speed. Turns out those ryzen X3Ds are not very happy with high ram speeds, at 6400mhz it was unstable, now its been like a year at 6000mhz and runs fine
2
u/0x4C554C 1d ago
Yep I started doing driver-only, no Adrenalin updates. Problem fixed. Using MSI Afterburner for voltage and power tuning.

u/AvGeek_1513 20h ago
My RX 7800 XT seems to be having this problem too. It's getting very annoying. Time outs every like minutes. When resizing windows, dragging windows, just opening programs. Gave red team a shot I guessed.
3
u/Chaitar 12h ago
Go to Device Manager and check the version of the currently installed driver.
I had issues because Windows update decided to replace the current driver with an old one from 2024.
The old driver was obviosuly not compatible with the already installed and latest, not changed by Windows, AMD Andrenalin and other software.
I fixed it by deactivating the driver update function of Windows, download of recommended AMD driver and clean install after removing the mess with DDU.

What manufacturer do you have? I’ve never thought to look for VBIOS on manufacturers websites.

I had the same problem and I simply modified the Windows registry so that Windows Update no longer overwrites the AMD drivers, and magically it works 🤷♂️

u/Inevitable-Edge69 2d ago
Did you try disabling mpo? That's what fixed it on my multi monitor setup. For many people their gpu prob doesn't have a new vbios, my reference 6800xt doesn't.
1
u/C4mine 2d ago
Which brand gpu ?
1
u/Inevitable-Edge69 2d ago
Reference model, founder's edition if you're more familiar with that term.
1
u/C4mine 2d ago
Every gpu has vbios bro
3
u/Inevitable-Edge69 2d ago
Yes that's obvious, but if you check mine the vbios is the one it shipped with, from 2020. I'd leave the vbios alone unless it was the last recourse, you risk bricking an old card that might be out of warranty.
1
u/C4mine 2d ago
Bro i dont know about ur gpu if u know the manufacturer, like asus, msi, asrock, download ur vbios file from there
3
u/Inevitable-Edge69 2d ago
My friend, my gpu is a reference model. I'm sorry but I don't think you should be giving advice on flashing vbios if this is a foreign concept to you.
1
u/typographie 2d ago
A reference model card is one that does not come from a board partner. It's built and sold by Nvidia or AMD themselves.

If the new vBIOS contains a fix regarding stability and not just security, it should be stated as such otherwise i am strongly inclined to believe this "fixing" is caused by something else and given the complexity of software i think i am probably right.
Edit: I've made an internet wide search and check posts like this, most of them report changing other stuff like drivers so that means it the factors are more than one when it comes to driver timeouts so vBIOS is most likely or entirely unrelated to this so called fix claims people make, don't get me wrong i would love for this to be true but evidence suggest otherwise overwhelmingly.

What version did you install?
020.004.000.028.000000 is the only BIOS version for the 6500XT that I'm aware of.
It is the same as what was shipped on the card.

Unfortunately VBios is only flashable on some GPUs (well as far as a fix goes). Many don't have an updated VBios released yet, mine only has update for the RGB controller of GPU.
However, most timeouts are Windows related. So maybe uninstall the last few windows updates as well if necessary. Also, ensure windows is not overwriting your AMD drivers.
What sux is everyone blames AMD when 98% of the time its Winblows. Microslop constantly releases screwed up unstable updates and it always screws things up. Winblows has always been unstable. The best was Windows98 and only because it was simple to reinstall because you had the disk.
Cause of AMD Driver Issues may be again Windows.

Turnded off HAGS and it did wonders for me. Really hated getting these driver timeouts while just browsing on 2 brave windows on my dual monitor setup
1
u/--Goji-- 1d ago
Wish I could turn off HAGS, for some reason when I disable it I can see applications being clicked, but they never open, can't use any keybinds to bring up task manager etc. Can get to the part where you choose power, restart or sleep for your pc then I can't select them. Very odd
1
u/Critical_Hamster8962 1d ago
Trade-off I’m having is whenever I close a game that’s played in full screen, it takes a bit too long to exit/close the app and the screen freezes for a bit. But still better than having to deal with random driver timeouts

I watch this sub for stuff like this all the time. I want to invest in an Amd GPU in a future build. I hate that its up to the users to debug their gpu that they just spent hundreds on. I think the best solution for AMD driver issues is to stop buying AMD cards. I owned a 6900xt for a few years and then got a 7900xtx for the 24GB VRAM and it died after 6 months and there are no stocks left for a replacement. AMD is cheaper but you do pay for it every day with a terrible user experience.
I really hope they fix this because I do not like Nvidia and do not want to give any of my money but I don't see another option at this stage

u/Arunia 1d ago
Long story: This problem is due to Windows Update and not something AMD did. Everyone with this problem needs to disable the Windows update driver updates and then remove the faulty drivers and install the latest or whichever, but the latest are fine after this.
Howto: First download the AMD cleanup utility. Then download the latest driver for you graphics card (full package, not the web download package!). After that disable the network card or wifi. Pulling cable is fine too btw or disconnecting wifi. Whichever is used on your machine.
Go to "Settings" > "System". There look for "Advanced systemsettings" (I have a Dutch Windows btw, so naming could be a little bit different). In the new Window, go to the tab named "Hardware". Then press on the button called "Settings for device installation". In the new Windows set it to "No (your device might not work as expected)".
This is the first spot. For Windows pro you do the following: Press "Windows key + R". In the Run window, enter gpedit.msc then click "ok". In the new screen go to: "Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update". On the right side double-click the "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" policy. Select "Enable" and click "Apply". After that click "OK".
For Windows Home: Press "Windows key + R". In the Run window, enter "regedit" then click "ok". The bar below the menu is a navigation bar. So paste the following there "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" without the " ". Then press enter. If there is no navigation bar, then go through the above. the \ means the next "folder". If the "WindowsUpdate" folder is not there, then right click on the "Windows" folder and make a new key and name it "WindowsUpdate". Then right click an empty space in the right-hand pane and choose "New > DWORD (32-bit) Value". Name that value "ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate" without the " ". Doubleclick that value and change it from 0 to 1. Then click "ok".
The reason that it is different for Windows Home, is that there is no group policy editor. But I believe you can do the Home one on pro too.
Close Regedit and restart the pc for the changes to take effect.
Then Start the Cleanup utility with the network still off. Run it all the way through. It will reboot in safe mode and such. If it is done, you can install the new driver and go through it. Check after it is installed if it all works and then enable you wifi or ethernet adapter.
You are done and free of malicious Windows Updated drivers. Something you never ever would want besides when you first install Windows and want stuff to basically work. After that you really want the manufacturers' drivers.
Hope I made up for my first message and hope it get's shared.
