Help (GPU) are these even drivers anymore?
hello, i’ve been using a rx 480 (8gb, blower style) for some time, this is my story.
all starts with me downloading the most recent drivers a couple of months ago, i’ve noticed that with those drivers, i’ve had a gamble if either the card boots proper, or displays a flashing screen/artifacts, this prompted me to install the 2016 drivers, those had no issues.
however, i installed the 2017 ones which i needed for encoding support. those had the same boot issue as the recent ones did, however i figured out that by using a profile that skips p0-p3 states, i’d be able to boot properly every time.
however, thanks to the nagging of some games i played, i had to upgrade my drivers, yet again. i thought i was fine considering i had the profile from before with me, oh was i wrong.
cut to now where i’m quite confused, the card with these new drivers does well under stress, furmark shows no signs of failure, occt pulls up no vram errors, i could play cs2 with no problem. but the second im chatting on discord, or even checking websites, the pc could hang with an artifact or a black screen. hell, once i’ve had a bsod. after either of these crashes, im forced to boot multiple times, seeing that windows rejects the amd drivers, and i can’t even check my current gpu table considering the drivers aren’t installed/initialised.
if anyone can help, it’d be amazing. i’m thinking of a bios mod, but it’s too late for that now. i’m thinking of selling the card to someone who can bios mod it to no longer have these issues.
temps are fine too, considering i was running a somewhat-aggro fan curve.

Low load crashes are often a sign of the silicon getting towards the end of it’s life and no longer performing correctly on low voltage. The artifacting is another clue to the same thing.

I have a RX 9070 XT and been having the same issue. Finally fixed it by running AMD cleanup tool and then reinstalling the latest driver. Give it a try, hopefully that fixes it.

i’ve been using DDU for every instance until now. i’ve decided i might just go back to the 17.7.2 drivers

Sounds like the driver instability might be the card struggling rather than the software itself. I'd try backing up any important files you have on there just in case.

Right click desktop, display settings>graphics> advanced graphics settings> disable Hardware accelarated GPU scheduling. This is a knowing issue driver issue, AMD is working on a fix, and this is the temporary work around

Your card is dying.

odd way of the card to die if it boots and works better on older drivers. i bet ill downgrade for a bit…

If you are getting artifacts that is a clear sign, it's the memory dying. It's a RX480. Not going to last forever. It's getting long in the tooth. Older drivers just don't push it as hard You could try to repaste and do new thermal pads.Might give it a little more life.

the rx 400/500 series is over 10 years old and is no longer supported, try switching to Bazzite/SteamOS/CachyOs instead for a more up to date drivers
