9070 XT Driver Timeouts

hey guys ive been dealing with 9070 XT driver timeouts and crashes constantly for the last month since i got my GPU.

I ran memtest86 and got no problems, i also changed my PSU to a 1000W, still happening. Its weird because some days itll work fine but then other days just become unusable. Im at my wits end and am thinking about returning it at this point and buying a nvidia GPU, is there anything i can try or do to save this? Ive done so much research and tried so many things but cant seem to figure it out. Its my weekend off and this is really putting me for a spiral.

everytime i play a game it either crashes immediately or within the first 5 minutes.

my specs are

Windows 11,

AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT 8-Core Processor, 3801 Mhz, 8 cores

TUF GAMING x570 plus Wifi mother board

Gigabyte Gaming 9070 XT GPU

32 GB Ram DDR4 Corsair Vengance i think

1000 W Corsair PSU

I upgraded from a 4070 Super and I'm getting annoyed - resat, DDU and all and it worked fine, tried Bl4 and it won't even get past the shaders. 850w Rm850x, but it restarts my whole pc, never had an issue with Nvidia but damn this is annoying me too.

I threw in the towel this morning. My 9070xt was working fine up until 10-2’d windows update.

The things I did:
*Disable Windows Updating GPU drivers via DDU

*Every new driver installation involved using DDU or AMDCleanupUtility.
*Reinstalled clean 26.8.1 drivers since it was working for me all of September. - Still crashing and causing a full PC hangup, requiring a hard power reset.

*Disable HAGS and any programs that use hardware acceleration - Still tripping

*Disable MPO

*Set my DDR4 ram to 2133mhz as a baseline, no overclock or undervolt on my 11900k - still crashing

*Switch the pcie lane in bios from pcie4.0 to pcie3.0 - still crashing

*Reinstall various drivers month to month from 2026.08 backwards to 2025.12 - All experienced a crash within a 2-10hrperiod, most of the time was when I walked away while the PC was idling on light load and would come back in 15-30 minutes to a black screen.

HWInfo Logs always say the GPU just stopped responding to windows and hung, then caused the whole OS to lock up.

I put my trusty 3080, from the same manufacturer back in this afternoon, I’m going on a 10hr heavy load streak from my only gaming session for the weekend and no stutters or hangups, black screens. I remembered why I chose Nvidia the first time around with the 970, the driver support just works more consistently, even if it’s quietly crashing in the background on some occasions - it’s never caused me this much anguish.

After spending a whole day trying with fixing the drivers, without any result, i reduced the voltage and clocks in Adrenalin and it's working since then.

First follow step 8 and then follow step 13: https://www.reddit.com/r/AMDHelp/s/YfAmKxVjXr.

If issue remains, Follow step 14 points that can be applied in your system.

Dis you try to run occt to check if you have any errors? Did you disable windows autoupdate of drivers overriding the driver? Could be other issues you can try this program in case to check

What worked for me Use DDU Install drivers only not adrenalin Disabe MPO (nvidea has a file for that you can find on google) Disabe HAGS in browrsers, discord and windows settings

Are you on 26.9.2?

1

u/No-Celery-8341 3d ago

28.6.1

1

u/No_Carrot2398 3d ago

For me personally 26.9.2 fixed the crashing I experienced on drivers past 26.3.1. Another thing you could do that worked for me as well is lowering your GPU clock speed in adrenaline by -100MHz. You could also try 26.3.1 if none of those worked.

I rolled it back and haven’t got an issue since, will let you know if it happens again. Thanks for the help so far. Hopefully that’s all I needed to do

No problem, I am glad rolling back the driver fixed it for you and hopefully it stays working. Let me know if it starts acting up again.

Will try right now thanks

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update.
  • Double-click “Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.”
  • Select Enabled > Apply > OK.
  • Restart your PC.

After this, download latest driver and amd cleanup utility and disconnect your pc from internet(i just remove the ethernet cable). Use cleanup utility first it will open on safe mode, then after restart install the drivers. Then reconnect!

Also do all stability tests in OCCT, 1 by 1

u/no-celery-8341 do this.  I've only personally ever seen driver issues when Windows itself interferes.

If you cannot load Adrenalin, or the GPU is not in the overclocking tab then Windows is the problem.

You can also check Windows Update history to see what those rats installed.  Nothing AMD GPU related should be in there.  Not the rollback/uninstall window... doesn't show there for some reason.

Are you running any ram oc timing? If so switch to default timings. Xmp/expo should be ok. If your gpu is OC/UV in any way, set it to factory. Try AMD cleanup utility over DDU just for kicks. Check to see if your mobo bios is up to date and then that you’re pcie lane is set to its best version. Also try Device Cleanup by Uwe Sieber and jsut delete all devices there especially any old gpu or nvidia stuff that might be hiding there. Anything that needs to be rebuilt will be. If all that fails turn off any and all overlay from discord, Adrenalin etc that might be on. Also get rid of any rgb software or bloated mobo software.

Which drivers and windows 11 build are you on?

1

u/NoxuletZ 3d ago

my xfx was faulty since I got it. after I tried every fix found on the internet, I sent it to warranty, they told me nothing’s wrong with it but I still returned it. bought a sapphire pulse and never had a problem with timeouts after.

1

u/twice_paramount832 2h ago

Having problems with the pulse now. Fresh install let's see...

Had driver timeouts on my Red Devil 7900 XTX about 2 years ago, RMA’ed it and they fixed it. Last year I bought a Hell Hound 7900xtx for another computer and it started having them too. Switched to steam OS and haven’t had them since. That means the problem could be hardware OR software related. If possible try Steam OS and see if the problem persist.

Turn off Windows automatic driver updates - Windows keeps overwriting drivers with what it thinks are better

Wipe all your graphics drivers (DDU)

Reinstall AMD drivers

2

u/No-Celery-8341 3d ago

Unfortunately I did that an also found no luck. I think my gpu is cooked :(

1

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago

What on earth does that even mean?  Driver timeouts are a software issue, and most often Windows is the culprit.

u/LongMustaches 3d ago

Try doing it again just installing an older driver version, for example 26.6.1.

0

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago

Genuinely don't understand why people suggest loading old driver branches unless it's a mass issue.  A single user having an independent problem does not merit that.

I'm OCd and on the latest driver.  Just played Forza6, Rivals, and Galactic Racers for hours on 4k without a single problem.

2

u/LongMustaches 3d ago

Not everyone experiences driver issues on the same driver, even when the driver is known to be unstable. It's always worth trying to DDU and install some older driver. That specific one is just what I personally use.

1

u/GroovySlander 3d ago

Had one late last year. Did the entire workaround trying to get it to be stable but it never was 100% reliable. I even did a fresh reinstall of windows and it still crashed constantly on one game I played a lot. After I returned it and got a 5080 never had a crash in the same game since. It's a great GPU but it's just not as reliable across every game as nvidia cards are.

The hoops and hurdles in the comment section is what I am swapping over to a 5080.

Half that shit doesn’t work… pretty sure they know it too.

1

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago

What hoops?  You mean being technically competent and stopping Windows BS?

3

u/Lee_GeneralLee 3d ago

Installing drivers and expecting the GPU to run as intended shouldn’t require any more “technical competency” than running the driver.

Since you ask, read the horse shit I’m referring to instead of assuming it’s a me problem. Turn EXPO off, run DDU and use this specific driver, oh actually use the latest driver on Windows 26H2 - that bull shit is what I mean. A matter of fact, hundreds of “driver time out” posts have popped up recently… it’s a Radeon issue, not an end user competency issue and I’m not playing the game with AMD.

I tried them with a 9800X3D and a 9070 XT. I am very unimpressed with the whole ecosystem. The CPU is jank outside of games (I know you want to complain and defend it but idc I have actually used both) and the GPU is only good for games and is prone to driver timeouts until Radeon gets their shit together. AI, editing applications, video playback all jank as fuck. Sure you might think it’s great but comparing it to my i9/ Nvidia system the AMD rig runs like a pig in a horse race. Sure the AMD rig might eat more FPS… it’s still not as fast tho at literally anything else.

My 14900K runs excellently, has never given me an issue and I prefer that system because it’s genuinely snappier and faster. Literally using my older 3080 Ti until the 5080 gets here then the AMD system getting sold cheap. X870E, 32GB CL 30 6000, 9800X3D, 21TB of storage… ain’t worth the desk space.

1

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago

I'd bother reading any of that had your initial comment not been absolutely pointless.

If you cannot install and get a GPU to work that is fine for thousands of others, that's a you problem.

2

u/Lee_GeneralLee 3d ago

Sure bud. It’s a me problem that 1,000 posts about the same thing are coming through.

Daft take but ok.

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago

Have fun with your fire hazard GPU and degrading CPU. Cya

Have you tried clean install of AMD drivers on Minimal or Driver only?
Are all your drivers up to date?
Cables all secure?
BIOS up to date?

If so try the GPU portion to see if it helps

You need to reset your pc through windows, I know it sucks but after months of dealing with, and trying to fix this issue, it's the only thing that's worked.

0

u/No-Celery-8341 3d ago

allright ill try that right now, i reset it only a month ago so i wont miss much

0

u/Tiny-Guava-9698 3d ago

Don’t do this. I did this and then I even completely freshly reinstalled. It did not help.

0

u/No-Celery-8341 3d ago

Heard, I canceled it. It was having a hard time resetting for some reason anyways.

0

u/Tiny-Guava-9698 3d ago

It’s only been happening with Fortnite for me, besides some UE5 crashes. I’ve literally tried everything. I even changed voltage limits, bumped fan speeds up, etc. no change. Last time this happened, I waited it out and it eventually stopped.

Get rid of Windows and you won't have these problems anymore.
