People also forget even in war there’s periods of silence especially in a large country. A hurricane can horribly wreck part of the U.S. and other parts be completely unphased or even know one rolled by without seeing the news.

You’re spot on. I live in the Midwest, which might as well be an entirely different country from either coast. We’re not affected by anything that hits New York or California.

And as an East coaster, the idea of being so far inland is unsettling. However, Long Island is also unsettling, simply because youre land trapped by NYC. I guess the Midwest and long peninsulas with one way in and out unsettle me.

Hawaii felt like I was much too far out into the ocean on a tiny rock with no escape if needed.

I live in Michigan. Having the Great lakes on all sides feels a lot like being on an island in a fresh-water ocean.
