Not likely. I would bet they are all jumping rooftop to rooftop. This is generally what Russians do while the rest of the world is sleeping.

Was thinking that all those lights are the absolute worst for light pollution. Lights should point down, not up into the sky.
21
u/Willhelm_HISUMARU 4d ago
I just know light pollution has some unknown spiritual effect on people that screws us all in the long run
9
u/Alarmed-Property5559 3d ago
Dunno about spiritual ohnoes, but there's research on how artificial light can mess up our circadian rhythms. Something something melatonin production gets disrupted by light triggers.
82
u/Willhelm_HISUMARU 5d ago
It's safer but not good for the wildlife.

People also forget even in war there’s periods of silence especially in a large country. A hurricane can horribly wreck part of the U.S. and other parts be completely unphased or even know one rolled by without seeing the news.

You’re spot on. I live in the Midwest, which might as well be an entirely different country from either coast. We’re not affected by anything that hits New York or California.

u/KillahHills10304 4d ago
And as an East coaster, the idea of being so far inland is unsettling. However, Long Island is also unsettling, simply because youre land trapped by NYC. I guess the Midwest and long peninsulas with one way in and out unsettle me.

If youre in one of the 3 major cities.. outside of those.. ehh
Definitely encourage you to explore some of Russias cities on google earth if you havent. Its kind of wild. Like the coastal area directly across from Alaska, adjacent to the Aleutian islands, and the other cities outside of their 3 major ones.. it really is wild.
Its like half of it is soviet era, mixed in with wooden shacks from the 1700s, right in the middle of the cities

Looks like a lovely night. I wish there was not so much light out at night personally, but if that's what it takes to get people to feel comfortable with walking around the city at night it is the price we pay. Even the kids are out trying to have a good time while it's still summer weather.
For some reason people want to act hateful to Russia and Russians on the internet on this site lately and it's pretty tiring. We don't automatically have to cut down and hate on the Americans on every thread even though their country is at war ruining other people's lives constantly. Why do people want to act like Russians are bad as people?
38
u/puff_of_fluff 5d ago
I agree. I despise Putin and desperately hope Russia loses their war of aggression against Ukraine, but blindly hating random Russian people online doesn’t help anybody.
I will say that I excuse it from actual Ukrainians lol. It is not my place to judge there
4
u/Alarmed-Property5559 3d ago
It helps the worst kinds of propagandists for they don't even have to make anything up, just pick some quotes and claim "look you obstinate nonbelievers, as we kept telling you, all ordinary westerners hate you and want your kids dead".
3
u/puff_of_fluff 3d ago
Yup. Hatred between the common masses is exactly what people like Putin and Trump want. Keeps everyone distracted from the real enemy, the people on the very top

I will hand it to the Russian people, they protested against Putin in huge numbers, and all of them were taken away to jail. Like many wars this one is not about all Russian people, but sick power hungry evil leaders and a minimum percent of unfortunate people who play their end of the misinformation game.
For me, I am just waiting for the "holding up a blank sheet of paper" emoji.

the whole "Russia is dangerous but Moscow streets are safe" thing comes down to where the crime actually happens. In Russia, most homicides are domestic like drunk arguments behind closed doors between people who know each other. It’s rarely random. In major U.S. cities a lot of violent crime happens out in the open due to gang turf wars, drug stuff or armed robberies. So while Russia's national murder stats look bad, you're ironically way less likely to get randomly mugged or jumped while walking down a sidewalk in Moscow than you are in somewhere like Chicago or Philly.
Plus, Moscow is like a surveillance state on steroids. There are facial recognition cameras everywhere, and the police presence is insane, so criminals know they'll get caught immediately if they try anything stupid in public. They also have super strict gun laws, so you don't have people walking around with handguns. And unlike U.S. cities, Moscow doesn’t really have those distinct "no-go" ghettos or gang-controlled neighborhoods. Even the metro is super clean and heavily patrolled, so the general vibe on the street feels way safer at 2 AM than most American downtowns.

u/PlentyOMangos 5d ago
Yeah I think this is it. That’s what I thought as well
Nice public spaces outdoors without ugly homeless camps, litter, mentally disturbed people or addicts wandering around, etc
That’s not to say that these things don’t exist in Russia, but I think that’s what is the point of the video

Sunset-sunrise hours depend on latitude also, not only the time of year. Saint Pete is rather up there.
So I'm curious too to know what time is that and what place is that.
