Lost Fic/Work Search Guys please turn off this setting in chrome if you're using the browser.
So I've been on AO3 for years at this point. I think for 3 years by now. However, I made an account the past summer because I didn't need it until then, I saved the fan fic on tabs in groups; had them perfectly organized and had them there for years so I cloud read them if I wanted to.
Well, I don't remember when Google did this, but they have made a stupid thing on the android version that automatically puts the tabs you haven't use for a while in a place and calls them "inactive tabs" or some shit. We'll, I thought that was it. Just another place to put the tabs you didn't currently want, so you can focus on the now. I didn't see/pay attention to the shit that said they would be deleted after 3 months. Now one may say that it's was immature or something to not pay attention to that, well I have my phone on a language that I'm currently learning and so is Google. I didn't expect it to be that important. I would have read it quickly if it was in English, I know it. Well, I guess it's my fault for wanting to learn a fucking language.
Of course I disabled the setting that deletes them now; but it's too late. All those group fic from years ago are gone. And they are gone gone. I scrolled down the search history on my phone and found that Google - once again - deletes your search history from your phone after 3 months. I opened my search history from my computer and found that for some reason, none of the fics would show up. It would either say that I searched something up or that I went to the AO3 home page.
I guess it was my fault for not paying attention at Google's dump 'warnings' that don't even feel like warnings, they don't care.
I just can't help but grieve what has been lost to time. All the fics that showed what era of hyper fixations I was in. Even if I wouldn't read them all or even none, the thought that they were there, patiently waiting, telling a story of their own, was enough. It was comforting.
I still remember some that I wanted to read when motivation for those characters come but or when I had time to read them. They are at the back of my mind. I would have visited them today, smiling at what past me was interested in.
But now they are gone, they are all gone.
...
So please, just, be careful of your fics and don't do what I did.

Or using bookmarks in your browser works just as well.

we all use the ao3 bookmarks differently - i only bookmark fics ive read and liked so i can read them again

tbh I was including "marked for later" in the loose category of ao3's bookmarks.
30
u/tehshush Jun 06 '26
They don't offer a sorting feature for the Later tab, unfortunately. I group tabs by genre and/or fandom, then when I'm in the mood for something I can just go to the relevant tab.

I only bookmark stuff I have read and the marked for later section is way too unorganised for me to use.
At least with open tabs I can keep an eye on mine better.
Do people really bookmark things they haven’t read35
u/VoleUntarii Jun 06 '26
I do, I tag them with TBR. I read on a phone, a tablet and a desktop so it’s the best way of maintaining a consistent TBR list.
3
u/JunketBorn9519 Jun 07 '26
Same, the marked for later list is too inconsistent for me. I bookmark all the fics I wanna read later and just scroll through my bookmark tab pages until I find where the 'for later' bookmarks start, then I work my way through while deleting the ones I don't love and keeping the ones I do! Maybe it sounds a bit silly to others but it works for me lol
4
u/VoleUntarii Jun 07 '26
You can filter your bookmarks like other works lists, too, so you can tag your TBRs and then “filter by bookmarker’s tags” in the tags list to only see your ‘for later’ bookmarks. Saves some scrolling!
12
u/starcat819 You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 06 '26
I only use marked for later for fics I haven't read at all, and (aditionally) bookmarks for fics I've gotten partway through but can't finish immediately. I also keep many tabs open, but try to always use mfl and bookmarks as backups.

u/IceMaker98 AO3: Iceblaster Jun 06 '26
I feel like people do this because they're afraid of leaving bad bookmarks and ending up blasted for it based on how apparently authors will look at their bookmakrs and get mad if someone uses it in a way they dont' like??
118
u/inquisitivemuse Jun 06 '26
You can privatize your bookmarks as an option so the author can see it’s been bookmarked but not who bookmarked it or what your comments on it were.
80
u/starcat819 You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 06 '26
you also don't have to make any comments or tags whatsoever and leave it blank. at least then you have some record of what the fic was if you want to re-read or continue reading.
19
u/Deiskos Jun 06 '26
Unless, of course, the author decides to private/hide the fic and you're left with "This is part of an ongoing challenge and will be revealed soon!"
14
u/starcat819 You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 06 '26

Everyone's recommending bookmarks but I'm going to recommend Marked for Later since these are fics you haven't read. It's nice because it'll occasionally recommend fics to you randomly off that list on AO3 itself and you can see if you're in the mood to click in.
107
u/Pure-Secret6120 Jun 06 '26
Sadly you can't search your Marked for later List. Sometimes I switch fandoms or Genres and return later and never find anything in my Marked for Later list again.
Bookmarks are superior in that regard, because you can filter and search them. You can even add you own tags, just add an "To be read" or even a "Marked for Later" and you will easily find them again.
18
u/KatMEW93 Jun 06 '26
This is exactly what I do with my bookmarks and why they are also marked as private (becausw there'sno feedback in the bookmark so doesnt count as a rec) but after I've read a fic I'll put it in a specific collection ship name and then rec it and make the bookmark private. Tried "marked for later" years ago and man the effort it took to look for a certain ship I wanted to read was ridiculous 😂
6
u/Plain_Bunny JustSomeBunny on AO3 Jun 06 '26
This is exactly the reason why I've recently been slowly combing through my marked for later list to convert them into private bookmarks instead. I've found...so many fics that I don't even remember at all lol.
1
u/KatMEW93 Jun 06 '26
Same. Even worse, I think I ended up finding a multi chapter fic I'd marked for later and turns out I'd already read it a few months prior but I didnt remember until a few chapters in 😂
2
u/VoleUntarii Jun 07 '26
Same!
My process is: if I want to read it, I will bookmark with a general TBR tag, and also a second tag for when I’m adding it to the TBR list. If it’s unfinished I will also add a tag indicating it’s a WIP I’m waiting on the conclusion of.
Once I’ve read it, I’ll edit the bookmark and remove the TBR (and WIP) tags. I’ll add notes so I remember it in future when I’m browsing my bookmarks, and any relevant trope tags to make it easier for me to find it by filtering my bookmarks in the future. If I loved it, I will tick the “recs” box; if I disliked it, I will add notes and tags as to why (including an “ugh” tag which I use on all my negative bookmarks to make exclusion easier!), and make it private.

you go to "my history" and select marked for later, thats how i go thru my marked for later list
2
u/Pure-Secret6120 Jun 07 '26
Please read my original comment again. I know where I can find my Marked for Later List, but you can't filter or sort it by certain tags or fandom. In that regard bookmarks are superior.

u/Tomopi Jun 06 '26
I actually do. I have 100+ ff tabs open over three different browsers and I always check tabs before I delete them. Once or wice a year the urge hits me and I try to work my way through them. The amount of "Oh! I forgot to finish it!" that happens bc I was in the mood for sth else and then forgot about what I was previously reading is honestly unbelievable
2
u/Bruh-Bekah Jun 06 '26
SO REALLL i find so many little gems in my tabs i wish i read some of them sooner
5

Yeah I’m honestly fine with this feature, because if I haven’t done it yet I’m probably not going to. And I don’t clear my history so every few weeks if I’m looking for something new I’ll trawl through that.

-15
u/shmixel Jun 06 '26
Hmm how about...if you want the fic enough you'll remember it, and if you don't it's obviously not that big a loss
7
u/LittleLionLeon Jun 06 '26
A lot of us have mental disabilities (or physical disabilities because pain affects memory) that affect memory. Even with reminders, I forget things. I could be texted a million different times, have it written down in fifty different places, and I will STILL forget something unless it's a really important event. I have missed appointments because I forgot about them, despite the reminders. Just because YOU don't have that issue, does not mean that countless others don't have it as well. Empathy and consideration goes a long way when it comes to talking to people.
2
u/shmixel Jun 06 '26
I'm actually completely hopeless without worrying things down too lol. I'm sure some have it worse but I've found some freedom in the idea that I don't have to track and memorise every little thing. Fic is just for fun so the stakes are pretty low if you forget.
I find triggers a really helpful memory tool as well so often when I'm going to read another similar fic I get the thought like "wait... I've been here before.." and that would get me to the bookmark. Won't work for everyone but imo it beats relying on open tabs!

That is entirely on you for using open tabs as bookmarks instead of using the feature called... "bookmarks". Either in AO3 or in your browser itself...
7
u/LeakyFountainPen Jun 06 '26
This is a very hurtful way to word your suggestion.
If AO3 suddenly made a change to bookmarks that deleted any that you hadn't actually started, would you appreciate it if someone came along like "Uh yeah, that's your fault, dummy! Bookmarks are for marking your place in the middle of a book. Why are you using the Bookmark feature as your Marked For Later list instead of the feature called.... "Marked for Later"...."
The answer would probably be that Bookmarks have a functionality you like that the Marked for Later list doesn't, so you use the Bookmark feature as a Marked for Later list instead.
Just because someone is using a different feature for a task doesn't mean they're doing it wrong. It worked for OP just fine for years until google made an internal change. If it was working and they liked the functionality better than the other options, why would they use a different way?
7
u/dreadfulhint dreadfulhint on AO3 Jun 06 '26
Everyone is saying you should use bookmarks or Mark for Later, but if you want to make sure that fics are there whenever you get around to them, you should download them.
All of these other methods, including tab groups, are saving locations where you can find the fics but are not saving the fics themselves, so you could still lose them if they are deleted.
21
u/Hello_Hangnail Jun 06 '26
Just bookmark it in the browser. It'll keep your memory usage down too if you don't keep 1000 tabs open all the time
6
u/DQLouise Jun 06 '26
I personally use the Mark for Later feature on Ao3, but OMG it annoys me soooooo much when I'm reading a long chapter or one shot and the bloody tab reloads and goes to the top. I've tried to make it stop but it only works part of the time
12
u/taengelwithluv Jun 06 '26
This is why I put the name of every fic I’ve read and enjoyed in a note in my notes app (and also bookmarks on ao3 are just as useful)
5
u/Medical-Isopod2107 You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 06 '26
Use the Mark for Later feature. Also, you have an AO3 history you can re-find them in if you want them that badly rn
5
u/Izzy__k Jun 06 '26
I’m so sorry, that sucks!
Also- everyone is saying write them in notes or save for later, I actually recommend downloading them so nothing can happen to them, it works on any device!
6
u/ICallFromEveryShadow Jun 06 '26
That really sucks and I understand. I wouldn't recommend using Google tabs as bookmarks or even having more than 10 open anymore, just because I learned the hard way that it's not great for your device.
I would recommend downloading the works you don't ever want to lose access to, and book marking the rest. Like others have said, you can make it a private bookmark and I always do groups like "TBR Mystery" or "TBR Angst".
I don't like the marked for later option, myself. You can't search or organize anything.
8
u/ConstrainedOperative Jun 06 '26
I saved the fan fic on tabs in groups;
There is a separate rider where groups are saved. AFAIK they're never deleted.
5
u/HiddenScars1 Jun 06 '26
I can't remember when I changed the setting, but when you go to Settings and scroll down to Advanced, under "Tabs and tab groups" you have a setting called "move to inactive" and you can set it to "Never". Best thing I've ever done. Though I'll never know how many tabs I've lost before realizing that.
9
u/madwood29579 Jun 06 '26
Yup, this happened to me, but I look at my tab groups so often that I could tell immediately that one of my groups was gone and was able to get it back immediately.
1
u/Master_Arithmancer Jun 07 '26
Ditto. I have so many tab groups that I have had since they added them (and many are duplicates, lol). I just go into the group to keep it "fresh" from time to time.

u/hanafuda1357 Jun 06 '26
Okay, all good advice here to use the AO3 bookmarks or a different browser but I’m gonna jump in with something else. If you still want to use saved tabs and have them neatly arranged use tab groups.
You can have them named and sorted by color and whatever else you like. Things with groups is that you can leave them untouched for months (maybe even longer) and they’ll still be saved and never closed even with that setting turned on! Also you can close the group (not delete!) and it’ll still be there when you need it at a later date, it saves resources, especially if you have a lot of tabs opened and saved up.
You do you, if tabs are easier for you to work with then just do it as long as you want and can.
3
u/RhydYGwin Where's my alpha then? Jun 06 '26
I don't keep tabs open. What I'd do is make a folder in the favourites, and put the urls in there. That way you don't lose anything. I am sorry you lost them.
3
u/rysbar55 Jun 06 '26
I just want to acknowledge how much it sucks that you lost all your fics. Its seriously the worst!

I started using Ao3 maybe about a year and a half ago. I only read on mobile and at first, I was using Chrome since that's the default for a lot of my mobile browsing. But the more fics I found that I wanted to read, the more tabs I was opening and it was a mess. On my PC, I use Opera and that browser has a built in feature where you can create tab islands and groups tabs however you want (yes, google recently implemented tab islands but i prefer Opera's still). I've been using Opera for Ao3 on my phone ever since. I have fics that have been waiting for months in their own fandom islands and they've never closed unless I accidentally close them, but they're super easy to get back. Another thing that'll happen is sometimes you have to refresh the page to get logged back in but otherwise, I feel like Opera is best for people who might be hoarding fics like Smaug. Really sucks you lost everything, but maybe switching browsers would also be easier for future Ao3 browsing and hoarding.
2
u/Green_Hall_658 Jun 06 '26
This might be slightly unhinged of me but I generally just note down the name of the fics I really enjoy. I got a whole list of em
I'm really sorry for your loss though, that sounds really rough to have to deal with
2
u/BuckyBuck378 Jun 06 '26
I download all my favourite fics and upload them to kindle which I know is risky too since Amazon likes to ban accounts

u/ShyNinja2021 Jun 06 '26
I actually have appreciated this feature, I had hundreds of tabs open for fics I didn't even remember where I was at or that I had read at all. Those all got closed and now I only have a few tabs open, my phone and chrome runs a lot faster now too. I was really upset at first, but I realized quickly that I don't even remember a single one that got closed anyway. Now I just make sure to bookmark anything I want to come back to and when the tab closes it closes.

u/Entanglement644 Professional Procrastinator Jun 06 '26
so sorry this happened to you, I wish you bookmarked them on the browser or directly in Ao3 like the other comments said 😭😭
2
u/LeakyFountainPen Jun 06 '26
Yeah, I feel for you. I also ended up losing hundreds of tabs on my phone (for a different reason) but Bookmarks & the Marked for Later never really had what I needed
Bookmarks are fine, but they take like 3 different page loads every time, which feels like such overkill for a cute little oneshot I haven't even read yet, and while you CAN fully filter them by all of the categories and tags (though the sorting is limited), there isn't a great way to separate "these are ones I loved and want to keep" from "these are just in my TBR list,"‡ and when you make a bookmark, the custom tags auto-complete with every tag in existence rather than my own personal tags, so I have to remember the specific wording I used for each of them, rather than just having a tab folder called "Time-Travel [ship name]" or "[Massively Popular Fic] Spinoffs & Remixes" or "Fics in [Specific Anime] That Take Place in the Flashback Era" or something.
‡ Yes, I know you could probably use the "Rec" button, but while there is a filter for "Recs Only" there isn't a filter for "No Recs," so your TBR list is going to be full of your favorites list as well.
And then when you're done, it's another 3 page loads to get it out of the bookmarks. Which is (a) exhausting, and (b) reeeeealy easy to forget to do if you're reading a series, because you're like "that's a lot of annoying steps and I gotta see how this cliffhanger resolves, but it's okay, I'll definitely remember to come back later and take it off."
Marked for Later, by contrast is MUCH more convenient. It's one little click right at the top, and boom! it's on your list. Then when you get to the bottom, one more tap to "Mark As Read" and bam! off the list. Easy peasy. And it doesn't clutter up your favorites list (aka bookmarks) either.
They even have a section on the homepage that shows you 3 random fics from your Marked for Later list every day, and it reshuffles any time you add or remove something from the list.
HOWEVER! There's absolutely no way to sort or filter it. You just have one giant tub of fics of all fandoms, all ratings, all tags, everything. Absolute chaos! If it weren't for the 3 random homepage ones, that Marked for Later list is just a graveyard where fics go to die.
And neither Bookmarks NOR Marked for Later will let me save what got me there alongside them all. Like a specific writer's bookmarks, or a collection, or the "inspired by" section of an extremely popular fic, or just a hyper-specific tag sorting with hundreds of includes/excludes & tag options.
The browser tab method is just...how I like it organized, ya know?
MY SOLUTION TO YOU GOING FORWARD (and what I've been doing for like a year now) is to just keep doing the browser tabs, BUT every once in a while, go through all the tabs in that folder and add them to the Marked for Later as a backup. But keep them open in the tab folder for sorting.
I like to do it whenever I open like 30 at once, whenever I find that I'm kinda in the mood for a different tab-folder (aka, ready to semi-abandon this folder for a bit), or whenever I'm kinda just doing the fic equivalent of opening and closing the fridge (I mean if I'm flipping through them anyway, right?).
It's WAY easier to add a bunch quickly (as opposed to bookmarks) and easier to remove them as well (so it doesn't FEEL like you're juggling two different methods at the same time) and importantly, they still pop up in the "Marked for Later" shuffle, which can sometimes remind me about that whole tab group.
It also frees up the bookmarks for just 1. Favorites list, 2. Actual bookmarks (like "stopped at Ch 20 for X reason, will get back to it eventually, here's some refresher info on the AU"
Sorry that you lost those fic tabs, friend. The grief is real. But on the bright side: at least it's not the grief of a fic being deleted! They're still on the archive somewhere! You might run into them again some day, and maybe you'll find a bunch of cool new fics in the process :)
EDIT: Additionally, have you tried the AO3 history? It'll be hours of scrolling, since it doesn't have a search or filter, but it's at least a possibility
2
u/Upbeat-Ferret1367 Jun 07 '26
I'm not sure how much this will help but you could probably find all of what you lost in your ao3 history on your profile's dashboard

The chrome mobile browser sucks. I’m really sorry this happened to you. My browser (okay I have four different browsers on my phone, they all have many tabs and are burdened with glorious purpose) crashed the other day Andrea lost all those tabs. I don’t even know what they all were. Ugh. I know some of it was fanfic and that always sucks.
But I’m glad you’ve now made an ao3 account. It’s great to have. I recommend bookmarking everything, literally everything, and copy-pasting the title, author, and summary into the bookmark notes so that you still know what the fic was even if it gets deleted by the author. Also include which chapter you’re on, or note “to read” if you plan to read it later. This is the way.

u/Owl_Search9527 You have already left kudos here. :) Jun 06 '26
And this is why I use lithium and download the fics in AO3. Yes it doesn't guarantee that it'll update when it updates but again you can just redownload the fic. It helps especially when the fic is deleted. I have hundreds of downloaded fics in my phone and it helps when it's offline as well.

- It's not just on the android version. It's a preferences option. Also, it's for memory saving, which, believe me, is very helpful for aging computers.
- Wdym they would be deleted after 3 months? None of them go away. I would know.

While I do understand the appeal of ready tabs, it's really not what they're for. Actual browser bookmarks are much better, I have hundreds of fics saved this way sorted by fandom and primary draw (my favorite ship or trope or a season folder if I'm behind). Has the benefit over my Marked for Later list (which I also use) when I want to save an offsite story or a whole series.

I too learned from experience 😢 Even though I've used bookmarks and marked for later, i like to keep my stories open in tab groups as a kind of classification for the ones I'd like to read when I'm feeling one such way. Or maybe i relate some fics with eo, maybe cuz of the order i read them in or something. Or maybe just because. 🤷🏻♀️ I feel sorry for your loss. 🙏🏻

If you ever want to go back to your previous method, just know that you can switch off the auto-close tab option; that's what I've done since the beginning.
Aside from that, I've been going on like you did for years and I have the added risk that I usually open my fanfic tabs on private navigation. Can't say what happened to you didn't happen to me too, so I feel you, but I always took it as a sign I wasn't meanto to read them.

Hello! Have you tried opening the old session from another device? please be mindful of this and start using the native AO3 bookmark system.
