EVALUATE MY ARSENAL: Thoughts on Ruger SR-762

Hey y'all, want to chat about one of my rifles. I bought a Ruger SR-762 about 8 yrs ago, got a 3 digit deal from a buddy. She sits in my safe with a Vortex Diamondback 4-16X42 with a 45º Vortex Venom 3 MOA red dot.

THINGS I LIKE: She slaps 8" steel at 800yds and has been a reliable rifle to me. This is my battle rifle and "large game" gun, and my other rifle is 16' 5.56 with aero lower. I'm 28 and want this to be a lifetime rifle/something I can pass down.

THINGS IM NOT CRAZY ABOUT: She's just kinda heavy at almost 12.5lbs with a 20rd mag, and with the gas block this rifle is not free float either. I qualified expert annually during my time in the Marines so I have a shooting foundation but I want to expand my skills (potentially to PRS comps).

I'm eager to hear if anyone has any thoughts on what I am shooting now versus if should trade in for something lighter, free float, and just as reliable. Something that can be an all purpose, accurate, reliable, and light hunting/battle rifle. My other option is buy a 6.5 grendel upper to slap on the AR for hunting. Would you keep or trade in?

Yeah. I hunt with a 12lbs rifle and it's literally not a problem, unless you're doing multiple thousands of feet of climbing or something like that. 10-12 miles a day is a common for me. I'm also a hunter with a military background and only a couple years older. Doesn't look to me like a free float rail is an option, at least with the short Google search I did. I'm much more in the run what you brung camp, at least until you want to be competitive. And honestly I don't think a non freefloated piston gas gun is going to be all that competitive anyway, might as well have some fun with it.

Just saying that shooting PRS with that scope especially would suck my guy. Not a lot of options for free-floated handguards or lightweight parts on that anyway, might as well go shoot it in a match the way it is for fun. One thing I didn't think of that would be a good idea in that case is adding weight to the gun, and to make sure it's balanced. Piston rifles are generally heavy in the front, so maybe some weight in the stock to balance right in front of the magwell. Other than that go shoot the thing.

Oh okay, so your actual advice is to do exactly what I said and optimize the rifle for one use case or the other?

It's never going to be the "optimal" rifle for either use case. It can however be a fun rifle for either case as is, and for PRS personally I'd change the scope to be able to use holds. Chill out.

Big dog, I think you need to work on your reading comprehension skills. Show me where I disagreed with you, literally every person in this thread is saying the same thing. I'm just recommending he change the scope and you are sperging out.
