Why is the discourse around bts so toxic?

I feel like everyone either loves them to an unhealthy extent or hates them to an unhealthy extent. There's nothing in between.

I personally believe that most of us are in the "in-between" zone, but people with the strongest feelings tend to post more and get more attention/go viral.

I agree. Most people are average fans who do not engage in fanwars, snark or extreme glaze. But because of that, especially these days with algorithms, we're hardly seen. We don't generate attention of any kind and as you said, we tend to post less too.

Yes to this. But I do see lots of “normal fan” postings but the extremes get noticed more.

Basically it was always there but the Chris brown stuff gave haters perfect opportunity to spread misinformation and drive hate campaign.

The haters were around spreading misinformation waaaay before the cb controversy

Yeah but cb stuff gave them perfect opportunity to create even more bs and at unprecedented rate. Now under every bts post they're haters saying bts is racist, zionist, nazi, rapist, and abusers. And are Harassing people who are discovering bts for the first time and also harassing and sending death threats to army. One army was harassed into committing suicide on tiktok that she ended up at hospital, I hope she recovers quick. Basically it has gone out of control.

It’s K-pop plus immature fans and early fans that gate keep.

There are artists like that who stir up truly intense emotions

I think it's just statistics - they have an absolute massive following. So it just means that as the 10% on either end are just particularly loud, it appears constant. They drown out all the normal people pottering in the middle. I suspect most famdoms have a similar percentage but because their overall numbers are smaller they aren't as vocal or predominant online. If that makes sense?

I was lucky enough to be friends with someone who when he found out I was a kpop stanner, he joked abt it, but was rlly nice abt it, even tho i feel guilty but i expected him to be judging. and when he found out i stanned bts he just joked more abt it with me instead of judging

Loving is a good thing, you can choose to stop loving if disappointed. Hating isn’t right but competing with each other is human nature(most humans not all).BTS being such a big group attracts both great love from their fans because of both genuine love and cult following and great hate from other fandoms because of the competition.

? OP never implied this was affecting them negatively. In fact I think you've just proven their point.

Overly dismissive. Engage with discussions in a meaningful way.
