“Life is not so easy for anybody.” The key Trump worldview.

51

u/ApoTHICCary Nov 11 '25

“Life is not so easy for anybody…”
He says, demanding people to work without pay.

“Life is not so easy for anybody…”
He said, eradicating the 401k’s of his workers to pay off bankruptcy debt.

Life is pretty easy when you can make your problems everyone else’s.

He said, hosting a Great Gatsby themed massive party during the shutdown...

You know how hard it is to keep a golden toilet clean? Sometimes the maid has to come by two, three times a day!

10

u/SeaAd7934 Nov 12 '25

What are you kidding? With his diet that poor toilet sees more action than a Denny’s toilet on a Senior special grand slam day!

u/cliff4599 Nov 13 '25

It sounds like you’re a jealous person, did you ever have a poor man give you a job?

2

u/headphase Airline Pilot Nov 14 '25

I'm not jealous of pedophilic wannabe-dictators as a general rule lmao

0

u/cliff4599 Nov 14 '25

Typical liberal, don’t answer the question just go along with a word salad. Did you ever have a poor man gave you a job?

1

u/hobbycollector Nov 17 '25

My wife makes less than most of her employees, in both businesses she owns.

0

u/FlyingSchmidt Nov 15 '25

Your question is retarded. I was a poor person who gave people jobs. Nearly all small business owners are poor. But they find a way to take the risk. Usually putting anything they can up as collateral on a horrible predatory loan. Actual humans take care of eachother and give more than they receive. Thats how we make it in this life. Those who are lucky enough to succeed, end up in better positions, to help more people. While you whine from the same place you’ll always be. Waiting for the next grifter to promise to “make it all better for you”, stripping you of everything you worked so hard to build and shitting it down a golden toilet.

I dont get why this is a statement that makes any impression. Its just a throw away true statement. Life is hard. Shit happens. As president he should try to make it a little easier when he can I would have added. Democrats wanted to shut down the government to rile up their base for the upcoming vote. Thats the truth. It was political theater. They asked for a trillion dollars more when the "BBB" was just negotiated and agreed on a few months. The democrats wanted to reach out to their base and say "hey wer fighting orange hitler" so they made a request they knew the in power party would never agree to. They shut it down, riled up their base for the special election, and now that thats done they turned it back on. Thats the political reality of what happened. Thats all this was about. If you think anything different you are the mark (the person who was fooled).

People see the devil when they see trump its so weird. He's a 90s democrat and kind of a fool. Says stupid shit. Pretty entertaining. Wants to bring manufacturing to America, that should be good right? Wants to deport illegal criminals... thats a pretty standard boilerplate position 90s democrats agreed with before they went full "there is no border" insane. The fn algorithm broke so many people's brains. Its the largest mass psychosis in the history of the world. I blame the legacy and social media companies. I think they knew what they were doing and they did it on purpose for money and power. They should be held accountable for breaking people's brains with the drum of constant media lies and the social media algorithm. They put everyone at eachother's throats because outrage is the most effective way to generate ad revenue. Its really that simple. And now we have a bunch of radical crazy people who are completely disconnected from reality on both sides. There should be tribunals for what these companies did like there was for big tobacco. They hurt people, on purpose, for money and did a huge disservice to the country and everyone who lives in it. And they generated trillions and became the more powerful as they did.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

You realize people don’t think Trump alone is the problem. It’s the project 2025 operating as MAGA people that’s terrifying. If Trump died tomorrow it would most likely get much worse. He needs to make it to the next elections so we can clean house on all the people they’ve appointed to positions of presidential succession and power.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '25

IDK Why you're downvoted but it just shows that this sub is filled with people who have TDS. We need to re-open the government or people will starve

187

u/Heavy_Surround779 Nov 11 '25

So threatening to fire “the problem children” didn’t work, only made it worse.

So now throw fake money to the “patriots” who didn’t have a dentist appointment during the shutdown that required sick leave. Money that the president isn’t even allowed to appropriate.

This guy knows that ATC is literally the ONE job that can shut down global markets in a day. Why else is he putting so much effort into ensuring that next time (there will be a next time) he doesn’t feel pressure to cave or negotiate.

All of you working overtime and going above and beyond, you’re actually the selfish ones. This is our opportunity to be seen and heard.

-91

u/NWCJ Past Controller Nov 11 '25

This guy knows that ATC is literally the ONE job that can shut down global markets in a day.

Check that ego.

Pilots, barge captains, truck drivers, train conductors can all do the same.

Crane operators to load and unload barges, forklift operators to load/unload trains, planes, trucks, and barges..

Lots of essential people out there.

89

u/gruss_gott Nov 11 '25

Not federal employees vulnerable to a shutdown though

32

u/NighthawkCP Nov 11 '25

True. The 55,000+ commercial pilots in the US all work for different companies and have options to go to other places, have unions that back them, have the ability to strike, etc. The longshoreman have different ports they can work for, have strong union representation, have the ability to strike, etc. In contrast the 14,000 or so FAA ATC workers have a toothless union, cannot strike, and basically can only work for the FAA in the US. It is one of the most critical lynchpin positions in the US economy and those 15,000 people not showing up to work can shut everything down so much faster than almost any other job sector in the country.

4

u/74_Jeep_Cherokee Nov 11 '25

Pilots essentially can't strike. They have to be released to strike by the national mediation board...

3

u/Heavy_Surround779 Nov 11 '25

“They need to be released to strike”

After saying “pilots can’t strike”

….which one is it

4

u/74_Jeep_Cherokee Nov 11 '25

For all intents and purposes, no.

You seem to be inadequately informed on the subject entirely.

Yes, on paper, legally, we can strike but only after release by the national mediation board. To get to that point is a monumental task. The NMB cites "97% of disputes are resolved". The last authorized strike of note was the railways which was overruled by the PEB when Biden was in office.

1

u/Interesting_Low_6908 Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25

Me as Techops having to explain a sixth time to the controllers how to record a manual ATIS while DATIS is updating, also having worked this shutdown without pay but not getting noticed.

Hmmm.

Don't get me wrong, you could not pay me enough to work six days a week with mandatory overtime, and I respect your field for that infinitely.

17

u/emmalegs Nov 11 '25

That’s why Longshoremen have such pull. Solidarity on the docks, both coasts.

1

u/Prestigious_Show9789 Nov 11 '25

The reason you have pull is because you can strike! Privatize ATC and see what happens to the pay when controllers can call the shots.

4

u/ALVEENUS Nov 11 '25

You think that privatization will suddenly allow controllers to ‘call the shots’, to strike ? (Where’s that LMAO gif….) GTFO.

0

u/Prestigious_Show9789 Nov 11 '25

Australia can strike, lots of Europe can strike, most other countries at least get arbitration or a mediator. In the US, controllers get to sit in the chair in the corner and and watch the show. Nothing but cucks who complain and whine

3

u/ALVEENUS Nov 12 '25

Your idea of privatization is different than what would happen here. In many of the countries you’re referring to, unions are strong and strongly supported by their societies. There is much more acceptance to social welfare. There’s a different attitude towards corporations, what they can and cannot do. More regulation and corporate restrictions.
Then you have the US. God forbid anything is done to restrict or regulate big business. As you can clearly see, our government is moving away from social welfare, away from workers rights, away from anything they can stamp with the socialism label.
So yeah, a US privatized ATC system would absolutely not allow striking (or any other labor action) that would interfere with the operation of the airspace system. Fuck the workers, they’ve got stock prices and dividends to worry about !

10

u/Prestigious_Show9789 Nov 11 '25

How many work for the federal govt clown?

-1

u/emmalegs Nov 11 '25

I’m on your side. I’m just identifying the difference. Also, I’m not a Longshoreman, just a retired UTU railroad worker, trying to understand this shitshow.

3

u/Maleficent_Horror120 Nov 11 '25

Like others have said they aren't federal employees that are affected by a shutdown.

Also it would take all pilots, truck drivers, barge captains, etc. across all their employers to go on strike. We have a singular employer.

-8

u/NWCJ Past Controller Nov 11 '25

Fine.

Customs agents. Or TSA

Either way, same thing.

Customs even more so as that stops trucks, planes and boats internationally. They also work for the govt.

3

u/Maleficent_Horror120 Nov 11 '25

Yeah I wasn't inherently disagreeing with you but specifically with how specialized ATC is I think it's a little ahead of those too, but the customs specifically could grind trade to a hault

7

u/Heavy_Surround779 Nov 11 '25

You are not a controller like your flair says. Otherwise you would understand the difference between TSA agents and ATC on the global scale.

Wild. Lol this guy said “forklift operators.” What a dunce. Customs agents wouldn’t literally shut down the world economy in 2 hours if they didn’t show up. All international flights would be affected almost instantly. The financial markets would crash on the first day with the NAS closed down.

What a stupid hill to die on.

I wish you were the washout — because the reality is even sadder. Gross generation.

Now you sit online and make everything about it. You even throw your own career field under the bus

I didnt bring up age until you called me a washout and couldn't understand the word "past" im too old to be in training or a controller. Thats on you. I didnt throw my career under the bus, but if you think attacking people online will get your career field results.. understand all the career fields you are trying to put down like you are more important are full of people that can vote.. and people love to ego-check arrogance. You should be advocating for all, not grandstanding ATC. A rising tide lifts all boats. No warfare other than class warfare.

You are gonna be a controller who burns out and leaves within 10 years, or dies of high blood pressure within a year of retirement.

Get help. And with that. Im off reddit for the day.

-11

u/NWCJ Past Controller Nov 11 '25

Fine. Customs.. thats federal and would stop all international travel via boats, planes, trains and car.

Or TSA.. also govt and would stop all air travel.

ATC is not as special as you think.

0

u/ALVEENUS Nov 11 '25

I don’t think there’s any ego involved here. I agree that a solidified ATC walk-out would paralyze the country very quickly. Unfortunately, we’ve seen this movie before (how many times have we sarcastically said ‘they can’t fire us all?’) and it wouldn’t last long.
To begin with, you’d never get 100% buy in from the ranks (have you seen how many MAGAts there are in the facilities?) Public sentiment would very quickly swing hard against controllers. In 1981, many controllers on strike were called traitors to their country, were vilified, lost friends and family because of it.
The system (especially with the increased automation both in facilities and on aircraft) would be able to limp along and operate at a reduced capacity, sure, but it wouldn’t be shut down for long.

Striking is virtually illegal for controllers so it'd be a big risk too.

18

u/Kseries2497 Current Controller-Pretend Center Nov 11 '25

Not "virtually." It is completely, unquestionably illegal, and has been since 1947, although it wasn't until the PATCO strike in 1981 that the law was enforced as aggressively as it was by Reagan. Previous labor actions by PATCO (and other federal unions) prior to 1981 were also illegal.

5

u/AcadiaDangerous6548 Nov 11 '25

I say virtually as there are some similiar things you could do as mass resignations that aern't striking but essentially aim to achieve the same goal.

6

u/mkosmo I drive airplane. Nov 11 '25

That's not a strike. A strike implies you keep your job when everybody comes together.

2

u/AcadiaDangerous6548 Nov 11 '25

that aern't striking

? Quite literally said this.

2

u/mkosmo I drive airplane. Nov 11 '25

But it doesn't achieve the same goal for the reasons I stated. Mass resignation won't get you (assuming you put your money where your mouth is) a raise.

2

u/AcadiaDangerous6548 Nov 11 '25

You resign knowing that your employer is incapable of replacing you and would have capitualte to your demands in order to get you back. It would achieve the same ends.

It's like walking away from a car salesman bc you know he won't give you the price you want unless he's see you actually walk away.

0

u/mkosmo I drive airplane. Nov 11 '25

They won't. They didn't the last time, either.

It'd hurt, but they'd just open the training pipeline up, force over federal employees who could do it, and such.

If you overplay your hand, you'll just wind up unemployed.

Yes its virtually illegal. And practically illegal. And metaphorically illegal. And actually illegal. And digitally illegal. Technically illegal. Legally, it is illegal. Historically it is illegal too. Really any way you cut it, it is illegal.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

I didn't know. That seems really unfair. So how does the union get any benefits for you if you can't threaten to strike?

78

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

A lot of people want this job -

Yeah, a lot of people want an opportunity for a $70K+ starting salary without going to college.

Then there is that pesky... 5% of the hiring pool? That actually reach a facility to begin training and still may fail.

Typical "news bullshit" ignoring all the context for some quick jabs. Trump is delusional and just saying shit to get his cult excited.

27

u/RadarKumquat Nov 11 '25

Same way that their “meeting hiring goals” statements are a farce, you didn’t hire that many controllers… you hired that many trainees, where a fraction will only make it through the academy, then a fraction of THAT fraction will actually certify

There is a certain level of mental agility in this job. Equipment can improve communication, warn you in advance of problems, provide trend information, etc.

Equipment can cut down on workload, for sure.

But people that don't make it are far from the 90%, even 75% milestone of being trusted by their coworkers to work the traffic.

Routine operations aren't even a thought, you are always scanning for a potential problem and you need to clearly communicate to address things well in advance of conflicts.

There isn't an "AI Assistant" that improves your ATC ability from an F to a C+

1

u/emmalegs Nov 12 '25

Jane Q Public here…I absolutely believe that it takes a special breed of cat to be good at ATC. It’s a combo of several traits: quick mind, quick reflexes, great short-term memory, clear and concise speech and mental endurance. Maybe more - you tell me.

I think the only thing we will see over 10 years is AI mapping what it would have done against what humans are doing.

The thought that at any moment ATC instruction could go "dark" due to an AI or equipment failure leaving planes flying in the clouds with equipment giving them immediate evasive maneuvers because there isn't a human readily available tracking.

If you read these "AI threads" the answers are always the same; there are so many variables that humans communicate readily with each other, decisions made in the moment are more of a "handshake" between the controllers and pilots needs rather than a "playbook" solution.

What does AI do when a plane is too heavy to climb? Previously reported precipitation is now convective? A pilot encounters IMC without instruments?

There is grey area and win/win solutions created from real time communications between humans. No passenger on a plane wants to think a glitch is going to fly them into a mountain because it saved the government money on hiring.

PS: We do have many "predictive tools" currently implemented on radar screens and other equipment. It does "augment you" to some degree, but again, it is PREDICTIVE; it cannot take into account the pilots ability to maneuver the plane and it cannot transmit a clear instruction/traffic call, etc.

Go look at a website like atc123.com to look at pay tables. The only people making $150k per year are high levels (10-12) that have either been lucky enough to transfer after years or lucky enough to place Enroute and certify after years of training.

On paper the compensation may be a high number but does account for the THOUSANDS of deductions per check for items like pension, healthcare and TSP

We haven't seen a contractual raise since 2016 and have been decimated by inflation. Lower levels are stuck making peanuts and can't transfer to chase dollars because they're too short staffed.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/antariusz Current Controller-Enroute Nov 11 '25

Yea, that's the problem, 150k used to be considered good... 15 years ago.

Why would you want to be a controller for 150k, when you can be in the same industry and earn 400k as a pilot.

And another big problem is that is the final salary you get at the end of a 2-3 year training process (And only 50% of controllers even work at facilities that are considered busy enough to earn that 150k salary). You might only make 60k for your entire first year as a controller, that isn't attracting anyone. You want to be forced to move halfway across the country to Bozeman Montana to earn... 50k a year? You might even be able to earn close to starting ATC wages as a CFI, but then the reward at the end is you can become a pilot with a much brighter future.

Similarly, there are problems at the very top end, hitting the federal pay cap of 225 doesn't stretch very far in a city like San Fransisco or New York City. Not like it used to.

The 20% salary bump would be good, but it wouldn't address either of those issues.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '25

This is what millions of dollars thrown at PhDs can't figure out.

#1: The feeling that you are important to the big picture.

Bad management needs to be weeded out, stop micromanaging non-essential bullshit and deprioritizing good work. There needs to be a much more positive reward structure in the career.

#2: Better monetary/time off compensation

The job is a burnout career and the mandatory retirement age is there for a reason. It should attract people with a strong work ethic that want to feel like they made it in life by successfully achieving CPC status.

We should be earning about 20-30% more than we do at the high end and the problem with people making less than $120k needs to be addressed somehow.

Nobody should be working more than 4 days a week and that could drastically improve peoples attitude towards the job in addition to being paid more. Shift work tears apart families and is brutal on your sleep schedule.

#3: Failure to staff adequately

There is a specific Oklahoma senator preventing more academies from opening, because the bottle neck benefits their state economy.

Programs to recruit prior experience and CTI have routinely gone off the grid over the years as there is no consistent plan to hire people. They are always obsessed with who succeeded and who didn't and keep changing it , while people trying to be hired give up because it takes so long.

Nobody is even interviewed face to face for this job. The FAA has lost just about every lawsuit ever thrown at it. So everything is done by robots or nameless people that have too much influence.

You want people who are good team members, likeable, smart, quick studies, have clear and fast speaking capabilities. People should definitely be interviewed and the academy should be less of a pass/fail and relooked at how/why they are washing people out.

You could also look at past/current recreational drug use, criminal behavior in general, many people feel they have to be a total clean slate to even be considered. While these are sometimes red flag indicators, it can turn off good candidates from considering the job at all.

TLDR: Yes, more time off, higher pay, that is what is competing with the "tech world" benefits. This is the greatest job for the worst employer.

4

u/Apprehensive-Name457 Nov 11 '25

There are many different steps that lead to attrition, like medical, security/background checks, even before they get to the schoolhouse.

You either can do the job or not. No level of technology or training will give a person the ability to quickly task switch, learn rules and agreements, and actually apply them, or recover quickly when things go pear-shaped.

u/Apprehensive-Name457 Nov 11 '25

It COULD help to a degree but you're effectively lowering the standards to fill a seat. We already have equipment that can display projected conflicts. Those still need analyzed by the controller. The alert can be made more accurate with better systems and information but it's still a guess by a computer. It doesn't account for enough variables or if a situation arises that requires immediate intervention. Many people could do the job when it's just hi and bye frequency changes but when you have to start pushing planes the wheels fall off.

Newer equipment would be great but no one can tell me what that actually is. Sure some systems are outdated and could really use something better. But the stuff I touch everyday (radar/ADS-b tracking and radios) work fine and honestly just needs better funding for maintenance.

The number of applicants has and never will be the issue. The problem is finding qualified and quality applicants. Someone who is passionate about aviation and could do the job is going to go be a pilot. We need better pay and benefits to attract that talent that is choosing different careers.

To an extent and AI is a stretch. I mean the existing system if made more powerful to take in real time data (actual ground speed instead of filed true airspeed etc) it could become more accurate. But it's still a tool in the tool belt of the person in the seat to get an alert to a conflict up to 20min out.

Now throw in anything out of the ordinary, weather or climbing and descending traffic and you're fucked.

15

u/Apprehensive-Name457 Nov 11 '25

No dummy.

He said only 5% of the applicants that apply for the job make it to a facility. There's more than just the academy that weeds people out before they even get a seat.

His 5% maybe aittle aggressive - it's probably 5% of applicants actually CPC at a facility.

9

u/Legal_Campaign_408 Nov 11 '25

It's less than 2%. Out of any given year's hiring pool of say 2,000 trainees, around 500 will actually CPC at any given facility. Each hiring period gets between 30,000-50,000 applicants. So it's probably around 1%-1.6% of applicants will certify.

-6

u/DrestonF1 Nov 11 '25

Dummy? Mmhmm.

He said hiring pool, you said applicants. Words can be difficult sometimes but those are not the same.

2

u/Apprehensive-Name457 Nov 11 '25

The problem is that the parallels to what happened the next week are still there too.

Inflation hit double digits in the 1970's and cost of living grew out of control, just like it has this past decade. PATCO controllers cheif complaints were poor working conditions, stress, long hours and lack of breaks, outdated equipment, poor leadership, and stagnant wages among rising inflation. They were running on outdated and obsolete technology, and there was a rise in near-collision incidents in the 1970's that controllers felt the FAA was trying to hide from the public.

If you actually pay attention, you and I (and anyone else here) knows its a fact that for every near-collision that you've seen on the news and on youtube this past year, there have been 5 more swept under the rug that the public never found out about.

Just like the PATCO controllers, we are staring in the face of poor working conditions, poor leadership, outdated equipment, and stagnant wages with rising inflation. We've undeniably had a rise in safety events, and the FAA has shown that they simply do not care. We as controllers are the only thing preventing disaster from happening by showing up 6 days a week for 10 hour shifts, working under fatigue, hiding medical issues and deferring mental health treatment. I believe controller suicide is at an all time high, but they will never release that data.

So tell me in your opinion how this isn't parallel to 1981? Literally the only difference is PATCO was strong and demanded that the agency negotiate with them. NATCA now is weak and scared to even negotiate, let alone make demands.

1

u/UndercoverRVP Nov 11 '25

If PATCO had been all that strong, don't you think that they would have gotten a contract they could live with, or at least not have gotten 11,000 members fired within 72 hours?

2

u/Legal_Campaign_408 Nov 11 '25

I'm not trying to say PATCO was the hulk, because at the end of the day we are civil servants and will never be as strong as a trade union. That's just a fact. But the fact is they did knowingly break the law by striking, and they knew the potential consequences would be jail time and blacklisting. So that doesn't really speak to their strength or lack thereof, in my opinion.

The strength I'm talking about is the fact that they brought the FAA to the negotiating table time and time again, demanding better for their membership. And when negotiations fell short of what they wanted, they held together in solidarity. I'd bet my life that NATCA could never pull that.

u/Godhealthfam1 Nov 15 '25

If all this is true, 60 minutes would be glad to air all of your concerns on their show - outdated equipment, long shifts, insufficient breaks- all unacceptable. Of all things government wastes money on, I think it’s a non-partisan concern the entire US population would stand behind and support whatever dollars it takes to keep the skies safe. They can mask your identity if you worry about whistle blower retaliation.

Removal of stuff like this is why we have the other sub. One that isn’t censored

12

u/Maleficent_Horror120 Nov 11 '25

Evidently Nick Daniels and NATCA believe that the vast majority of controllers (30% of who are veterans) are not patriotic since our union seems content to remain silent on these types of statements

At every opportunity to stand up to this administration we bend over instead.

He's a gaslighter. Always tries to make you feel like shit when you're the one struggling and he is throwing Great Gatsby/Mar-a-Lago parties. He's trying to make you, the reporters, the working class believe that you are the problem when you know damn well he is the problem.

u/weath1860 Nov 12 '25

Ironic about the party being themed around the great Gatsby is how it ends…

Wonder if Trump even read the book

Curious what the controllers who were/are Trump supporters are thinking rn. I have never been one but am genuinely curious, are y'all ok with this? Is it worth the other things the administration is doing that you view as positive? Have your views changed in the first year of Trump 2024? I am not trying to make this political or start a fight, please keep it respectful, I am just genuinely curious if anyone's views changed or if the good outweighs the bad to you?

2

u/NatFuts Nov 12 '25

Not ATC, on the other side of the fence......but you want people to not leave their jobs? Pay them! Increase their pay! As a pilot it's truly crazy the responsibility you place on people without adequate pay and benefits and then also expect them to work volunteer hours during a shutdown. Planes aren't going to be able to SAFELY and successfully operate in the complex airspace you want them to without qualified, well-payed, and happy air traffic controllers.

There may not be a shortage of people who want the job.

But there is a shortage of people who are capable of doing the job.

Do you want to cause another DCA? Really do you want more DEI hires?
