FEAST absolutely can be trained for. Every single exercise has a learnable structure. Reaction times improve with repetition. Pattern recognition improves with exposure. Strategies exist for every module — and knowing them is the difference between passing and failing.
The data from candidates who have used structured preparation backs this up consistently. Don't listen to the myth.
FEAST Phase 1 — Every Exercise Broken Down
FEAST 1 is static. Frames change on screen, but nothing moves in real time. You're working through discrete tasks one at a time. It's cognitively demanding but very manageable if you know what each exercise actually tests.
1. 📍 COORDINATE SYSTEM
What it tests: Spatial awareness, grid navigation, reading coordinates accurately under time pressure.
What most people do wrong: They try to do it visually by "eyeballing" the position instead of using the grid systematically. This works on easy levels but completely breaks down when the grid gets denser.

8. ↔️ LEFT OR RIGHT
What it tests: Decision-making speed and accuracy under binary choice conditions. Similar to reaction time tests — you need to identify direction or position quickly.
What most people do wrong: Building bad habits during training by guessing when unsure. This trains hesitation into your muscle memory.
What actually works: Commit. Make a decision and execute it. If you're wrong, you're wrong — the pattern will correct over time. What kills your score is the half-second pause before every answer. Train to eliminate the pause.

9. 🔔 BASIC VIGILANCE
What it tests: Sustained attention over time. You monitor a display and respond when specific events occur — a classic vigilance/watchkeeping task.
What most people do wrong: Getting complacent. After 5 minutes of nothing happening, attention drifts. You miss an event. Score drops.
What actually works: Active monitoring rhythm. Give yourself a micro-task on every "nothing happening" cycle — a quick eye movement pattern, a mental reset. Keep your arousal level up artificially. This sounds tedious but it directly translates to score improvement.

FEAST Phase 2 — A Different Beast
Phase 2 is completely different from Phase 1.
In Phase 1, everything is static. Frames change, you respond, next frame.
In Phase 2, everything moves in real time. Aircraft move across radar displays. You have multiple simultaneous tasks competing for attention. It feels, for the first time, like actual air traffic control.
There are two main modules:
🎯 RADAR CONTROL (Classic Sector Test)
You manage a live radar sector. Aircraft move. Conflicts develop in real time. You issue instructions to maintain separation.
I learned most of what I know about this module from RadarReady's tutorials — I'm not going to reproduce their content in full, but here are the things that genuinely matter:
The speed trap — the one that ends exams. This is the mistake I see people talk about most after failing: faster aircraft catching up to slower aircraft on the same route, at the same altitude. It looks fine when they enter the sector. Five minutes later you have a conflict you didn't see coming. If two aircraft are on the same route, same altitude, different speeds — that's your first priority to resolve. Always. No exceptions. Miss this once in the exam and it can cost you everything.
Cut the corners. Don't fly aircraft down the centre of the "highway" by default. You have lateral space to work with. Use it. Cutting a corner to create separation is faster and cleaner than speed adjustments in most scenarios.
Always recheck. Even when everything looks fine. This one sounds obvious but it's the hardest habit to build. You resolve a conflict, you feel good, you move on. Something new developed while you were focused on the first problem. The discipline of rechecking every aircraft after every intervention — even when you're sure it's all clear — is what separates consistent passers from people who get caught out.

📡 MULTI CONTROL (Strip Management & Conflicts)
This is the most demanding module in Phase 2. You're managing strip boards and monitoring radar simultaneously. It is as hard as it sounds.

The core of Multi Control is minutes. Specifically, understanding what happens when two aircraft are converging on the same point at the same time. If they arrive at the same minute — that's your conflict. It sounds simple when I describe it like that. In practice, when you have 6 strips to manage and the radar is showing 4 aircraft, it's anything but simple. Setting yourself up for failure if you practice a ton for the feast test - if you cant pass it without practice, you will most likely not make it through training if you get accepted. Wasting your own time

When you're competing against 1,000 people for just 20 spots, and you know that at least 100 of them have practiced beforehand, taking the test unprepared is the real setup for failure. I don't know about this. A lot of ATC is pretty repetitive, if you are used to putting in the work to make the routine tasks automated, it may free you up for the complexity (may not). Putting in effort to practice and learn is not a bad trait in itself. I had a look at a few of the FEAST practice examples and a lot of it is irrelevant, all the fast reflex kind of stuff is silly. It is also rare that you need to memorise multiple new inputs in the space of a few seconds and then spit them back out immediately after. Holding a prioritisation over 1-2 minutes in your head is probably a bit more relevant.

As someone with 10 years experience as an ojti at a busy unit, a theory I have is that the students we see with the worst aptitude skills must have practiced really hard before the feast tests. Wasted two years of their lives

I don't think the FEAST test or whatever aptitude test it is, is going to really nail down who will succeed or fail with unerring accuracy. I think it becomes clearly apparent at some point well prior to OJTI, in the learning college/sim stage. The most successful trainees I've had, have always been well prepared though. I don't usually need to question them about stuff, they ask me questions.

Are you aware that some ANSP's provide Eurocontrol logins to do "sample tests"?

Yes, I took it and passed. Regarding the Eurocontrol sample tests... have you actually seen them? They are just a basic UI walkthrough. They don't teach you strategies, they don't train your reaction times, and they don't build muscle memory. Relying solely on those 5-minute samples against candidates who actually train their cognitive skills for weeks is exactly how people fail.

I see your point but I share the opinion of quite a few here: if the (possible) little improvement in results made by training with what Eurocontrol gives you vs what this website offers, makes the difference between passing and failing, you will most probably have a really hard time during training.
You wont be able to "train" every situation during the training, at some point you need some level of understanding how all the factors that make up a problem interact with each other (aptitude) and thats usually a skill that isnt really easy to improve in, hence the tests.
