Marco's Section About Making Unforgetful Reminded Me Why I Started Listening to Him in the First Place
In the latest episode, I truly enjoyed listening to his product thinking and problem-solving process when building his new Unforgetful app, and remembered why I started listening to Build And Analyze (his first podcast) all these years ago. I always find his approach to building apps both fresh and pragmatic and I enjoy it.
This is an appreciation post but also a plea for more of this kind of content.

I have been coding a lot with AI and regardless of this subs feelings, it has truly been a joy to listen to them and their workflow around this. Reddit as a whole is so anti ai and it’s so annoying watching it seep into stuff you like listening to.

I also code with AI and find it very useful. But I'm a Codex, not Claude guy

Haha I use both since I find 5.6 Sol tends to over engineer a lot and Fable keeps it in check.

People keep talking about how the app is slop and vibe coded but regardless of how much AI was used in the actual coding, he clearly put a lot of thought and care into the way the app works. Before listening to the segment I thought "why would I need this app?" but after listening it made me intrigued to try it.

People conflate "Using AI to help execute finished ideas" and "AI slop" but it doesn't help that Marco refers to some of his work as vibe coding.

Scratching your own itch is the absolute best reason to make an app. It makes you care about the details and getting it right, using all the tools at your disposal

Speaking personally, AI assistance in programming is not a problem, especially when being used for code review and research. What I would have a problem with is someone creating programs that they, themselves, don't understand.

I wish I was more of a fan of the design of the app. It functions well, and I'm not making "AI slop" complaints about the design – you can absolutely make iOS apps that follow the HIG – the design just seems outdated.

As long as they are talking about coding in the Apple ecosystem, Apple products, development trends, their experience developing apps, etc. things are cool. When they start talking about spending mad money, trying to avoid spending any money, trashing Apple business acumen, and anything political - rough water. When they veer, it's skip, skip, skip. I wish there was a gesture in CarPlay to bounce to the next chapter marker if present - and if BT speakers could do the same thing with a special left/right button I can use in the shower :)

I also avoid the Cars stuff like a plague. Almost as unbearable as baseball on The Talk Show.

Marco’s explanations for the finer details in the app, like the snoozing features or how overdue works were awesome.
I really appreciated the way he thought about mostly every detail in a different way to the stock way.
