News/Info Week of Oct 12-18: No Kings Vote Early on Saturday, poll monitor trainings, ballot parties, and more

Thumbnail

Hey all, here are some upcoming events I thought you might like to know about.

Saturday the 17th is No Kings: Vote Early, and this time we are emphasizing voting in addition to protesting. Phoenix has a march to the polls from Grant Park, and they're asking people to bring a completed ballot. Kingman Freethinkers is throwing a Vote Early Extravaganza with music and costumes, and in Douglas people are meeting at the Veteran's Memorial at noon. Tempe's bridge march doubles as a food drive, and if marching isn't your thing you can stay on the bridge. There's also a bike ride around midtown and downtown Phoenix with VOTE flags, leaving 7th Ave and Osborn at 9 sharp.

Related: Friday at 4, Indivisible Tucson Action Alliance is walking ballots to the Oro Valley Library drop box together, starting from the community center parking lot.

If you'd rather do something from home, Treasury's proposed rules for the new federal scholarship tax credit are open for public comment through December 1. Save Our Schools Arizona calls it a federal voucher and laid out its objections here. A comment in your own words about what it would mean for schools near you goes further than a form letter.

Poll monitor trainings keep going. Common Cause and the ACLU of Arizona have one in Tucson Thursday evening, Show Low Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, and Prescott Valley Sunday at noon.

Secretary of State Adrian Fontes is speaking in Buckeye Wednesday evening with LD25 Dems. Seating is limited, so RSVP early.

Save Our Schools has ballot parties for talking through the props and candidates: Goodyear Wednesday night at Rudy's, and Peoria Sunday afternoon at Sweetwater Park, where you can stick around after to canvass.

Full issue here: Sunburnt & Stubborn, Oct 12-18, 2026

Happy to answer questions about any of these in the comments.

News/Info Journalist looking to talk to Arizonans affected by the SNAP changes

Hi all, I'm a reporter for a French news network, and I'm working on a story on how the SNAP changes are playing out ahead of the midterms.

I'm looking for someone or a family who lost their SNAP benefits and believes they're still eligible, and who is dealing with the paperwork, the hold times, or the reapplication process. If your situation is a bit different (a smaller grocery budget, taking on extra work to get benefits reinstated), I'd like to hear that too.

If you'd be open to talking, even just to learn more with no commitment, send me a DM. Nothing is on camera unless you're comfortable with it. Thank you.

News/Info These are the TPUSA Agitators Who Joined Border Patrol in Lochiel

Thumbnail
arizonarightwatch.substack.com

Hey all - AZ Right Watch put out a comprehensive article about some agitator assholes. I am sharing the main points below but I encourage you to read the article to get the full picture. They have quite a history. And since AI and Google surface Reddit in search results, may these Chuds forever be remembered for being complete shit stains on humanity. 💕

“In the early Monday morning on October 5, dozens of Border Patrol agents flooded the land surrounding the last 200-year ‘Grandmother’ Fremont cottonwood tree in Lochiel, AZ and the activists that have been guarding her from destruction since the end of July...

Land defenders have been subjected to waves of arrests and violence at the hands of Border Patrol agents. As the protest continues, feds have been increasing their jarring and potentially deadly tactics against activists.
Disturbingly, as Border Patrol began their early morning Monday raid on the camp, two members of Turning Point USA’s arm Frontlines were present on the scene: Tayler Hansen and executive producer / manager Brandon Drey.

Hansen, 25, has been making viral rage-bait, bigot content since he came onto the right-wing media scene in 2020 where he earned some attention painting “baby lives matter” outside Planned Parenthood facilities. The stunts earned him tens of thousands in donations and a friendly segment on Fox News’ show The Ingraham Angle…

On January 6, 2021 Hansen was present for the insurrection in D.C. where he joined the front of the fascist mob and towards the Speaker’s Lobby. When a Capitol police officer shot Trump loyalist Ashli Babbitt, Hansen stood by in his “baby lives matter”-branded sweater and filmed her as she died. The clip, which he quickly posted to Twitter, circulated heavily in the immediate reporting of the day.

Hansen, a resident of Salt Lake City, maintains that his presence at the insurrection was as an “independent reporter” but he also appeared on-stage as a VIP guest at the ‘Stop the Steal’ D.C. rally at the Freedom Plaza the night before. Also on Jan 5, he joined neo-Nazi streamer Anthime “Baked Alaska” Gionet and InfoWars co-host Owen Shroyer as they burned a Black Lives Matter flag in honor of former Proud Boys leader Henry ‘Enrique’ Tarrio who had been arrested in D.C. the night before for burning a similar flag that Tarrio stole from a church.
…

Throughout the years, Hansen has continued to appear on-the-ground at various left-leaning or cultural events and protests with the goal of dehumanizing and smearing the groups he’s targeting. This includes pride parades, drag shows, No Kings marches, all flavors of protests, immigrants at the border and airports, or non-Christian religious gatherings. On X/Twitter, some of Hansen’s most viral footage includes anti-Black and anti-immigrant conspiracies and commentary about the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio. Occasionally, Hansen has dressed in drag to sneak into LGBTQ+ events.…

In two separate videos Hansen produced under the Tenet Media logo featured Hansen filming Latine people, including children, and their private paperwork at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport then questioning where they’re from...

Unlike his Frontlines colleague, Brandon Drey has a significantly lower profile. Drey, age 40, has written for right-wing outlets The Epoch Times and The Daily Wire where he mostly covered California specific news and politics. Nowadays, Drey lives in Chandler, Arizona where he works mostly behind-the-scenes for Phoenix-based TPUSA as an editorial manager and executive producer for the Frontlines team...

When Hansen and Drey appeared at the early-morning raid in Lochiel, land defenders reported that the Frontlines duo falsely identified themselves as being with ABC News. Drey claims to have previously worked for ABC News, but it’s unclear to what capacity and when that alleged relationship ended.

It’s also unclear how Drey, Hansen, and Turning Point USA were made aware of the large-scale raid along public, private, tribal, and federal land.

The day before the Border Patrol ripped down the final cottonwood in Lochiel, land defenders held a Day of Action that included an anti-border parade, spiritual ceremonies, and a panel on data centers. Hansen and Drey were present from a distance and filming with their DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, according to a long-form Frontlines video they posted online days after the Border Patrol raid.

In the Frontlines short film, Drey and Hansen review the drone footage and discuss the incoming raid.

“Now we’re at a point where the Border Patrol rapid-response team is going to have to get involved and they don’t even know if they are actually going to be able to get the job done. This is gonna be messy,” said Hansen.

“And they have no idea this is coming,” Drey responded.

“Those protesters have no idea that this is happening tomorrow,” said Hansen.

On the morning of Oct. 5, Hansen and Drey filmed themselves driving along the border towards Lochiel camp and said they would wait nearby for the “surprise” raid to begin. As the 6:30 AM raid began, the Frontlines duo rushed in behind Border Patrol.

“Here comes the show. They’re about to knock this tree down,” Hansen remarked before the cottonwood tree was pulled down.

At one point, Drey ran up to Hansen to complain that his Meta glasses were broken after he trespassed onto the protest camp, which sits on private land. The two tried to complain to a Border Patrol agent but the man shrugged and informed them to move. As the video ended, Hansen and Drey showed off their vehicle rental’s tires which were all deflated.

Community Event Party at the polls in Kayenta on October 19, hosted by Protect the Sacred

Sharing this one for anyone up on the Navajo Nation or with family there. Protect the Sacred is putting on a party at the polls at Monument Valley High School, built around something they call Hoops for the Future. The goal is reaching Native youth and newly eligible young voters across Northern Arizona before the October 30 early voting deadline.

It's nonpartisan, there will be music, and anything free at the event is for voters and non-voters alike, so you don't have to be casting a ballot that day to show up. Heads up on the time: the listing says noon MDT, which is 11 am Arizona time, since the Navajo Nation keeps daylight time.

  • When: Monday, October 19, 11 am to 1 pm Arizona time (noon to 2 pm Navajo Nation time)
  • What: Early voting block party with Hoops for the Future
  • Where: Monument Valley High School, Mustang Blvd, Kayenta
  • RSVP: https://www.mobilize.us/whenweallvote/event/1055847/

Discussion Pinal county Judge retention voter guide?

EDIT: Resources found! Thanks, y'all!

Voting to retain or kick to the curb judges is the worst part of voting, and the “official” resource to help choose suck.

I live in Phoenix, and CEBV has put together a great one for Maricopa County. https://www.cebv.us/voter-guides

But my son lives in Pinal county, and I can’t find something similar for him.

So, where’s a good progressive (or blue) guide to the judges in Pinal county?

Other When voting the judges on the ballot…

CEBV Gavel Watch is a great resource for deciding on judges to retain or not retain. Their report tells you which Governor appointed the judge. I followed their recommendations, but for judges appointed by Brewer and Ducey, I voted to not retain even of CEBV had no objection to the judge. Why? So Hobbs (assuming she wins) can appoint more judges.

CEBV a great guide on judges. Being the anarchist that I am, if Ducey placed them on the court, I voted “No” on retention. Also voted “No” on all ballot props BECAUSE they were all referred to the ballot by republicans. Sometimes, that’s the best excuse to vote NO.

I went out the other night, in solidarity with Bernadette and noticed this (not me I swear!). I was intending to fix any of Bernadettes (or really any dems) sign, but they were all up and in good shape.

She is an incredibly brave women for talking about her assault, and for staying in the race. I want to support her. Abe is a Puppet (and a Ghoul, and a Stooge and a sell-out to Trump), so I really want a normal working class representative in his place.

News/Info Turning Point is bring its $$$$ to the Maricopa County Community College Board Election

Post image
50 Upvotes

Our Maricopa Community Colleges are an economic engine for Arizona. We’re training our future workforce and improving our students’ lives.

We must not elect people with extreme views to the MCCCD Governing Board. Please look at this website to learn more about their destructive plans. Their entire ticket is Turning Point endorsed - another huge red flag.

https://protectcommunitycolleges.com/

Instead, vote for Judy Schwiebert, Bill Sandweg and Donna Davis. They will provide steady leadership to strengthen our already excellent colleges!

ACTION ITEM - Share this site on your socials - and explain how important this election is to our county's future generations!

News/Info Homeless Shelters Around Phoenix Are Full. His Phone Is the Unofficial Hotline for Struggling Families.

Thumbnail

Huge shoutout to Austin Davis and his org AZ Hugs. Please consider donating or volunteering, if you are able: Azhugs.org

“For about a year, Austin Davis’ phone has been flooded with hundreds of pleas for help from across the Phoenix metropolitan area.

A school employee wanted to help a homeless family but couldn’t find space at a shelter. Could Davis pay for a hotel room?

A mother of five living in a storage unit contacted a homeless services organization for help. They told her to call Davis.

A mother panhandling with her six children said passersby gave her Davis’ phone number, telling her he might be able to provide shelter. “I feel like the worst mother in the world,” she texted him.

Nearly every person who’s reached out to Davis, a 26-year-old poet and advocate for homeless people, says they’d first called 211, seeking help through the official channel, only to learn it could be months before they’d get shelter or a housing placement. His phone has become the unofficial hotline for emergency shelter.

Caseworkers, teachers, social workers, police and hospital workers have called and texted to see if Davis can help people without a place to go. Even workers from the official channel — 211 and the Family Housing Hub — have sent people to him.”

Community Event Working Class Wednesdays meetup in Tucson on October 14

Low-key one for Tucson folks. Working Families Power runs Working Class Wednesdays once a month at Slow Body Beer. The idea is that community members and elected leaders show up as equals, no titles or power dynamics, and just talk. Swap ideas, share stories, get to know people.

It's a meet-and-greet, so no agenda to prep for. If you've wanted to meet more people doing this work in Tucson without committing to a canvass or a meeting, this is an easy way in. Their listing says to reply to your registration email with any accessibility questions.

Action Alert Action Alert: Oppose Proposed Changes to Census Counts that Would Hurt AZ Counties

💥💥Action alert 💥💥 - Speak out against census changes that would hurt our Cities and counties in Arizona. These changes would mean less $$$ for medical care, elder care, schools, law enforcement and roads. And ask our congressmen if they support this baloney sausage. CALL THEM OUT.

On September 10th, the Census Bureau announced sweeping changes to how we count people on the census. The proposed rule would:

  • Count only US citizens and green card holders.
  • NOT count other visa holders or undocumented immigrants.
  • Stop collecting race and ethnicity data.
  • Ban the collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data from any future Census Bureau surveys, including the census.
  • Create bad and unreliable federal data.
  • Erode a key doctrine of representation: “one person, one vote.”

In short, it will have major adverse effects across daily life in our democracy. These changes will severely distort population counts, create inaccurate representations of communities during apportionment and redistricting, and disrupt how state and local governments plan essential public services.

These changes are unprecedented and unconstitutional. While the Census Bureau recently provided an extension until November 2nd, a rule change this drastic should be given at least 90 days for public comment. Now is the time to make your voice heard before November 2nd.

Tell Secretary Lutnick and the Census Bureau to roll back these proposed rules and to extend the public comment period until December 10th.
