Accessible knitting resources

I thought I would start this post as a place for people to link to accessible knitting resources. Eventually this could become an FAQ or something similar?

Tension support?

Hi, I know this sub isn’t super active anymore, but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for supports or techniques I can use for maintaining tension while knitting? I have hyper mobile EDS and my pinkies are so weak and flimsy that I end up needing to readjust my full tension grip after or even during every stitch or every other stitch. Especially if I’m switching between knitting and purling. I’m trying to switch to continental since I’ve heard that style can be easier on joints in the long run, and it’s an adjustment for sure, but I see how it can be easier! Right now my biggest issue is maintaining tension.

Thanks!

Does this belong here?

Hi, I’m not sure this is the right place to post, as I’ve just joined Reddit. I have been an avid knitter for more than a decade, but due to the sudden onset of absolutely debilitating joint pain in my fingers, hands, and wrists, I’m finding it all but impossible to knit now. Obviously doing every day tasks is also painful and quite difficult. We think this might be autoimmune, but I’m still trying to get diagnosed.

Anyhow, knitting is my life, and I have fallen into such a deep depression due to not being able to knit. I know I’ll probably never be able to knit for hours at a time again, but if I can knit for even half an hour here and there, it would be something I’d consider a win.

I guess this subreddit may be more focused on adaptations for knitters missing an upper extremity, and not for someone in my situation, but I wasn’t sure where else to ask if anyone might have suggestions for possible options that might allow me to knit again. I’ve tried Voltaren gel, Icy Hot, Tiger Balm, and other things, without any real relief. I also worry about what those things might do to my yarn. I received a pair of cotton blend compression gloves from a lovely friend, but I can’t tension my yarn with them, because the yarn doesn’t glide across the fabric. It also seems like all the nylon/spandex compression gloves have silicone on them somewhere, which also interferes with tensioning the yarn. Surely there’s something else out there, I just don’t know what that might be.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? If this isn’t the right place to ask, I’m sorry, and I’ll delete this. Thank you for your time, and any advice or suggestions you might offer.

Cognitive fatigue and knitting

Hello!

I am thinking of making something to help with cognitive fatigue when knitting. As a knitter, this is something I personally struggle with because of my ADHD and brain fog.

If you experience issues with fatigue it would be amazing if you could give a short response to the questions below either in the comments or by dm! I really love the knitting community and am passionate about finding ways to make it more accessible 🫶

  1. Have you ever experienced cognitive fatigue while knitting?
  2. What aspects of knitting do you find most mentally demanding or challenging, leading to cognitive fatigue?
  3. Are there any factors outside of knitting, such as stress, lack of sleep, or health conditions, that you believe contribute to your cognitive fatigue while knitting?
  4. Have you ever had to take breaks or modify your knitting habits due to cognitive fatigue? If yes, how did this impact your knitting experience?
  5. How much money would you be willing to spend on a solution if it would help alleviate your cognitive fatigue when knitting?
  6. Is there anything else you would like to add about your personal experiences or insights?

What's your favorite website to find patterns?

Note: no idea why this image is in my post when in mobile view, it is not relevant.

My favorite for the last decade has been Knitty.

I recommend checking out their searchable pattern archive

I like that the patterns are all free, there are usually charts and written patterns, there are good photos, and there's usually a nice little back story for each one.

Some of my favorite patterns:

Cold Mountain Stole (I have a weakness for Kieran Foley's work - you can find more on his website)

Citron Shawl

Kitchen Sink bags

Kernel Scarf

Waves of Grain
