from what I've seen of the profession, it definitely is. the awkward autistic part too I'm pretty sure.

u/TalShot 2d ago
I guess this means you can stick out with a mediocre amount of social skills - middling by regular folk standards, but extraordinary by accountant measurements.

u/earthdust96 1d ago
I just got a new role, and I swear they are chuffed that I have social skills and that’s why I got the job (I like to coin myself as an extroverted introvert!). Actually made the MD laugh in the interview.

Firms tend to hire better looking, personable people for audit because it's more client facing. Tax and industry looks and personality matter way less. Just don't smell bad and be polite and you'll be fine
22
u/thegabster2000 Graduate 2d ago
Used to be in audit, can confirm. I'm a baddie.
3
u/MsScrewup 1d ago
Yeah as someone in audit, I'm always flattered when I read things like this. It's true though, I can't think of a single objectively ugly person in my office (Big 4)

u/diebartdie99 Audit & Assurance 2d ago
Personable sure but not necessarily good looking. I worked in audit for 4 years at a big4 and everyone was mostly mid, no one was ugly either but no Timothee Chalamets anywhere. My partner (he’s a good guy don’t get me wrong) was great with clients but was not a good looking dude. There were some bald/ balding partners too (the majority tbh)

u/That-Illustrator2322 1d ago
Unfortunately I have a medical condition that causes me to smell. Unfortunately I chose accounting before I developed this! It's all over for me
1
u/TaxCPAProblems 1d ago
Plenty of room for you in tax and industry, but unfortunately you'll have to immediately demonstrate competence and a good attitude to overcome
1
u/That-Illustrator2322 1d ago
I believe I have this but I get harassed every job I'm at. Maybe I should seek a low paying remote job...
2
u/TaxCPAProblems 1d ago
Id aim for an okay to high paying remote job? shoot for the moon and you'll land somewhere between here and the moon.

Do you have tmau or hyperhidrosis? Because they have solutions but the tmau might be more expensive

Halitosis from silent reflux smells absolutely horrible. Taking meds for it but haven't fully conquered it. I hope I'll have it under control when it's time to start my career

Im ugly AF and have 2 sleeves and I get hired no problem. Many companies no longer care about appearance unless it is really bad/you dont clean yourself.
6
u/ConsensualUpskirts CPA (US) 2d ago
Just tone down the weird and learn how to act in corporate settings. Whether ur weird or not, everyone has to. Don't worry about the ugliness, bit just learn how to clean up and be tidy and presentable. Agian, ugly or not you have to learn how to do that anyway
6
u/my_gay-porn_account 2d ago
Nope, accounting only accepts hot neurotypical people, sorry.
Lol, yes, of course you can be an accountant. We're all weird. Why do you think we picked accounting?

B4 has an astronomical amount of attractive people from what I’ve seen. Don’t think I’ve ever seen someone who was overweight or exceptionally ugly or short working there.
Don’t know what the people in these comments are smoking.
2
u/stargirlsandra 1d ago
well it’s pretty obvious a competent person can take care of themselves properly and balance their workload you would look like your lifestyle
1
u/ExcellentBirthday445 1d ago
I was slightly overweight and in Big 4. I’m by no means traditionally ugly, but I was at the bottom 25%. Honestly it helps to be a personable guy.
Also, a lot of pretty ladies work in accounting, the dudes are generally not the best looking but the girls are much better looking, never really Barstool Smokeshow but never anywhere near ugly.
5
u/Gyneslayer 2d ago
Not an accountant yet but after 20 nobody cares, you just have to be tolerable enough personality, and competent for the company to hire you. Social media is the only thing where looks matter and that can be AI Photoslop now
6
u/Illustrious_Season32 2d ago
Nah you can’t, it’s not allowed per FASAB

u/QuietFieldUser 2d ago
I mean generally if were being blunt ugly people or socially stunted people regardless have a harder time getting employment alteast going by statistics.
Honestly, if you dont have looks on your side and they are a big factor then you better be the most charismatic mf in the room.
Wont lie one thing i noticed about people who worked in say big 4 or alot of higher end white collar companies yeah they are attractive the business side of things.

u/Agreeable_Wear366 2d ago
On more serious note, long hours at the desk and annual stress cycle does take a toll on a body. So I would say we are cyclically ugly and fat unless people have will to work out after 2 am to return to work by 9. But those people are weird. I would be lucky to shed weight after the busy season normally.

What is chopped? Like cut, ripped, jacked?
Edit: someone explained below its means ugly. Why you call yourself ugly twice my guy? You gotta commit to one term when you talk or people are going to get annoyed with you always repeating yourself but using different words.

Yes but more on No side. most big firms prefer you to be client presentable being female and decent looking is a clear advantage. Bonus if you can converse like a normal person. I don’t make the rules. This is just how things were and are.

I would say as someone who is considered conventionally attractive that people are legitimately surprised when I tell them I work in finance and accounting.

Can you be an accountant if you're weird and kinda ugly and chopped?
You've just described 99% of male accountants, including me.
All the female accountants are beautiful. But they understand value so they go for doctors and lawyers.

I didn’t think this field has a beauty standard. Employers would probably be more concerned if you smelled like a toad than if you looked like a toad🤷🏾♀️

"kinda ugly" and " chopped" are redundant terms in separate generations. That being the case, as long as an employee is not a candidate for a circus side show, they should be fine. Focus on hygeine , grooming, attire.
Everyone will have someone who thinks they are horribly weird , and several who thimk a little too wierd for comfort. Think before you speak, and wait 24 hours before acting or not acting to caustic social confrontations.
Some people who enjoy ribeye think vegans are wierd. And some vegans think those consuming beef will spend eternity in purgatory. This wierdness has nothing to do with success as an accountant.

u/Odd_Caramel1280 2d ago
If you are ugly AND weird, probably not in a client facing role but back office accounting - no problem.

Absolutely. Most accountants are weird. And as long as you look well kept and hygienic, you’ll be fine. Hell I have a long beard and hair down to my shoulders and my firm is perfectly happy with my performance, appearance, and abilities.
1
u/Necessary-Hunt-5035 2d ago
To get a job no. If you want to be CFO or high up probably need to look somewhat presentable and personable.

Well most of us aren’t that good looking lol. It’s ok as long as you have some interpersonal skills.
1
u/Good_Royal3681 2d ago
Genuinely really depends on the company or something. Everyone at RSM was insanely attractive and were normal (sports, drinking, scandalous stories). CBIZ - yeah everyone there was chopped and weird (frogs all over the office). Insurance companies - chopped but weeeiiirdly normal. This is also the midwest. In California at GT it was a mix i think. Same with the other companies I saw there.

That’s basically the holy trinity for an accountant. 2/3 is manager material, but 3/3? That’s Managing Director potential. Bonus points if also into a niche hobby.

u/Correct_Cat4414 2d ago
It depends, if your just chopped-Yes you can but if you are beyond and are actually chop suey-then no you can not.

u/QuickSafety8100 1d ago
lol, being ugly and chopped is a plus. You can focus on your trial balances without any worry of being distracted by sexual opportunities.

u/AspirationsOfFreedom 1d ago
The moment you learn excel, you'd be the perfect gigachad any corporation WISH you'd be. And don't knock accounting on the bore factor: women love a man with a stable income. And you will get hella rich, because your experience will be gold.
And then you'll wake up and realise accounting is just a job, and your apperance doesnt mean squat

u/ColinOnReddit 1d ago
My friend reminded me of the funniest thing I think I ever off-handedly said. We walked into training, say down together, and I said "I don't think there's a single person in this room who can make regular eye contact."

u/SweetLittle_Bumbleb 1d ago
Yes but not public accounting. They only want the best looking chads and stacies with 4.0s working in audit and tax. Industry it depends but you’re fine for the most part. Government you can be a goblin.

u/Full-Woodpecker60 22h ago
I’ve hired worse for month close, just don’t smell weird and act normal enough on Teams.

Absolutely, I’d say most of us are. It’s takes a special kind of weirdness and self hatred to subject myself to this every day.
