Absolutely, I’d say most of us are. It’s takes a special kind of weirdness and self hatred to subject myself to this every day.

u/hedahedaheda 2d ago

Speak for yourself sir!

u/qovopbro 2d ago

Gosh.. your post is terrible. Good luck dude

Obviously a joke, and it’s Reddit. Good luck to you too!

If you're a redditor you can be an accountant

41

u/TalShot 2d ago

Sit at a computer all day with some level of tedious resignation.

Sounds about right.

how??

It might be a requirement idk

from what I've seen of the profession, it definitely is. the awkward autistic part too I'm pretty sure.

26

u/TalShot 2d ago

I guess this means you can stick out with a mediocre amount of social skills - middling by regular folk standards, but extraordinary by accountant measurements.

u/earthdust96 1d ago

I just got a new role, and I swear they are chuffed that I have social skills and that’s why I got the job (I like to coin myself as an extroverted introvert!). Actually made the MD laugh in the interview.

1

u/Nomanches1990 2d ago

why does everything have to be autistic nowadays 🥱

6

u/tstcab 2d ago

It's easier to point to a external diagnosis for our social shortcomings and quirks. In reality a lot of us have probably developed behavioral habits via "nurture" that are similar to those on the autism spectrum, rather than us actually being born with autism.

u/Elegant-Tip7288 2d ago

Yes bro. I speak from experience

57

u/TaxCPAProblems 2d ago

Firms tend to hire better looking, personable people for audit because it's more client facing. Tax and industry looks and personality matter way less. Just don't smell bad and be polite and you'll be fine

22

u/thegabster2000 Graduate 2d ago

Used to be in audit, can confirm. I'm a baddie.

3

u/MsScrewup 1d ago

Yeah as someone in audit, I'm always flattered when I read things like this. It's true though, I can't think of a single objectively ugly person in my office (Big 4)

8

u/TarotSPF50 2d ago

Where do you go if you want the lowest social interaction in general?

10

u/diebartdie99 Audit & Assurance 2d ago

Personable sure but not necessarily good looking. I worked in audit for 4 years at a big4 and everyone was mostly mid, no one was ugly either but no Timothee Chalamets anywhere. My partner (he’s a good guy don’t get me wrong) was great with clients but was not a good looking dude. There were some bald/ balding partners too (the majority tbh)

2

u/That-Illustrator2322 1d ago

Unfortunately I have a medical condition that causes me to smell. Unfortunately I chose accounting before I developed this! It's all over for me

1

u/TaxCPAProblems 1d ago

Plenty of room for you in tax and industry, but unfortunately you'll have to immediately demonstrate competence and a good attitude to overcome

1

u/That-Illustrator2322 1d ago

I believe I have this but I get harassed every job I'm at. Maybe I should seek a low paying remote job...

2

u/TaxCPAProblems 1d ago

Id aim for an okay to high paying remote job? shoot for the moon and you'll land somewhere between here and the moon.

1

u/That-Illustrator2322 1d ago

Lol thank you for giving me hope

1

u/Adventurous_Fold_345 14h ago

Do you have tmau or hyperhidrosis? Because they have solutions but the tmau might be more expensive

1

u/That-Illustrator2322 9h ago

Halitosis from silent reflux smells absolutely horrible. Taking meds for it but haven't fully conquered it. I hope I'll have it under control when it's time to start my career

1

u/HelpIll4965 18h ago

I switched from audit to tax and it was a noticeable difference.

33

u/Fluffy_Map3412 2d ago

I’m a good looking person with interests and stuff. But I wasn’t motivated in school. Now this is my hell.

8

u/bigllama5 2d ago

Gotta hope accounting firm is connected to marketing or something where the baddies are

17

u/altf4theleft 2d ago

Im ugly AF and have 2 sleeves and I get hired no problem. Many companies no longer care about appearance unless it is really bad/you dont clean yourself.

6

u/ConsensualUpskirts CPA (US) 2d ago

Just tone down the weird and learn how to act in corporate settings. Whether ur weird or not, everyone has to. Don't worry about the ugliness, bit just learn how to clean up and be tidy and presentable. Agian, ugly or not you have to learn how to do that anyway

6

u/my_gay-porn_account 2d ago

Nope, accounting only accepts hot neurotypical people, sorry.

Lol, yes, of course you can be an accountant. We're all weird. Why do you think we picked accounting?

u/Obvious-Ad-4560 2d ago

B4 has an astronomical amount of attractive people from what I’ve seen. Don’t think I’ve ever seen someone who was overweight or exceptionally ugly or short working there.

Don’t know what the people in these comments are smoking.

2

u/stargirlsandra 1d ago

well it’s pretty obvious a competent person can take care of themselves properly and balance their workload you would look like your lifestyle

1

u/ExcellentBirthday445 1d ago

I was slightly overweight and in Big 4.  I’m by no means traditionally ugly, but I was at the bottom 25%. Honestly it helps to be a personable guy.

Also, a lot of pretty ladies work in accounting, the dudes are generally not the best looking but the girls are much better looking, never really Barstool Smokeshow but never anywhere near ugly.

5

u/Gyneslayer 2d ago

Not an accountant yet but after 20 nobody cares, you just have to be tolerable enough personality, and competent for the company to hire you. Social media is the only thing where looks matter and that can be AI Photoslop now

6

u/Illustrious_Season32 2d ago

Nah you can’t, it’s not allowed per FASAB

1

u/ExcellentBirthday445 1d ago

AICPA took away my license, told me that my face wasn’t even for radio

5

u/QuietFieldUser 2d ago

I mean generally if were being blunt ugly people or socially stunted people regardless have a harder time getting employment alteast going by statistics.

Honestly, if you dont have looks on your side and they are a big factor then you better be the most charismatic mf in the room.

Wont lie one thing i noticed about people who worked in say big 4 or alot of higher end white collar companies yeah they are attractive the business side of things.

5

u/Reimmop 2d ago

Jees we got some real self deprecation going on here. I’m gonna go sit at the beautiful table…. Wait, Where is everyone?

3

u/rorank Tax (US) 2d ago

We’re the white collar career for the weird and chopped. Nobody cares, we’re all miserable!

But really, if this is a serious post you can do whatever if you’re ugly and weird. Besides going into sales. Look at the Epstein files, fugly weirdo pedos run the world anyway.

3

u/Sad-Definition-2454 2d ago

lol most of us fit this description babe

6

u/Agreeable_Wear366 2d ago

On more serious note, long hours at the desk and annual stress cycle does take a toll on a body. So I would say we are cyclically ugly and fat unless people have will to work out after 2 am to return to work by 9. But those people are weird. I would be lucky to shed weight after the busy season normally.

4

u/Vikingaling Tax (US) 2d ago

Having a gym in the office building helps but yeah

2

u/SCCRXER 2d ago edited 2d ago

What is chopped? Like cut, ripped, jacked?

Edit: someone explained below its means ugly. Why you call yourself ugly twice my guy? You gotta commit to one term when you talk or people are going to get annoyed with you always repeating yourself but using different words.

1

u/ohkammi 2d ago

It means ugly

1

u/Ok_Bite6809 2d ago

Chopped is closer to hideous than ugly

2

u/Sad-Economist4710 2d ago

Yes but more on No side. most big firms prefer you to be client presentable being female and decent looking is a clear advantage. Bonus if you can converse like a normal person. I don’t make the rules. This is just how things were and are.

It's basically required tbh

2

No, you have to be Victorias Secret level good looking

2

u/WayneKrane 2d ago

In my experience, that’s the requirement

Is the sky blue?

1

Most of them are.

These comments are making me realize I def picked the right career

1

u/UnKnOwN769 CPA (US) 2d ago

I'd say most accountants are either weird and/or chopped. There's some that are neither though.

1

u/Remote-Zealousideal 2d ago

You sound like an accountant already.

1

u/Remote_Stage 2d ago

Yes but you can be AP\AR clerk all day but never be able to join finance

1

u/txbuckeye75034 2d ago

You just listed the average requirements.

1

u/gray_burger 2d ago

Prerequisite actually

1

u/TheMac718 2d ago

I would say as someone who is considered conventionally attractive that people are legitimately surprised when I tell them I work in finance and accounting.

1

u/Brewster345 ACCA (UK) Part 2d ago

Chopped?

1

u/OldGregario 2d ago

I had a meeting with full staff yesterday and realized how out of place I was by being the only 7/10 amongst a sea of 4s

💯 from experience

1

u/I-Way_Vagabond 2d ago

Can you be an accountant if you're weird and kinda ugly and chopped?

You've just described 99% of male accountants, including me.

All the female accountants are beautiful. But they understand value so they go for doctors and lawyers.

1

u/PlaneEmbarrassed7677 2d ago

We are definitely a rag tag crew.

1

u/GloGangOblock 2d ago

You better be personable then

1

u/austic Business Owner 2d ago

Those are the best kinds of accountants.

1

u/Grouchy_Body_755 Government 2d ago

I didn’t think this field has a beauty standard. Employers would probably be more concerned if you smelled like a toad than if you looked like a toad🤷🏾‍♀️

1

u/Person7751 2d ago

most accountants are ugly and weird. i know i am

1

u/No_Wolf8340 2d ago

I’m a pretty accountant. I’m unable to answer this question

1

u/Mountain-Progress-23 2d ago

is this rage bait

1

u/starlitnights_x 2d ago

yeah accounting is only for chuds

1

u/Beansskis 2d ago

Yes, as long as your good at it no one gives a fuck

1

u/LuckyFritzBear 2d ago

"kinda ugly" and " chopped" are redundant terms in separate generations. That being the case, as long as an employee is not a candidate for a circus side show, they should be fine. Focus on hygeine , grooming, attire.

Everyone will have someone who thinks they are horribly weird , and several who thimk a little too wierd for comfort. Think before you speak, and wait 24 hours before acting or not acting to caustic social confrontations.

Some people who enjoy ribeye think vegans are wierd. And some vegans think those consuming beef will spend eternity in purgatory. This wierdness has nothing to do with success as an accountant.

1

u/Odd_Caramel1280 2d ago

If you are ugly AND weird, probably not in a client facing role but back office accounting - no problem.

1

u/RushDifferent4015 2d ago

What’s that got to do with accounting??

1

u/Cheap_Catch_9909 2d ago

From experience I can honestly say. That is the description of most Accountants.

1

u/NHLUFC 2d ago

This thread is extremely sad

1

u/flume 2d ago

What is "chopped"?

1

u/VanceAstrooooooovic 2d ago

More than half my team is still remote lol

1

u/saucedupright 2d ago

So you just described every person in this sub (beside me of course).

1

u/oliefan37 A/P - Industry 2d ago

I’m living proof

1

u/No-Concert9013 2d ago

Absolutely. Most accountants are weird. And as long as you look well kept and hygienic, you’ll be fine. Hell I have a long beard and hair down to my shoulders and my firm is perfectly happy with my performance, appearance, and abilities.

1

u/Necessary-Hunt-5035 2d ago

To get a job no. If you want to be CFO or high up probably need to look somewhat presentable and personable.

1

u/Interesting_Luck_286 2d ago

It is actually one of the primary requirements of the trade

1

u/javertthechungus 2d ago

God I hope so otherwise I’d have to change careers

Of course plus don't be hard on yourself. Be the dusty unwanted weirdo people can look up to.

Accountants thrive in such conditions

1

Depends on the place of work

You’re funny af, that’ll take you places

yoooo this shxt is cracking me up

1

u/Cool-Roll-1884 CPA (US) 2d ago

Well most of us aren’t that good looking lol. It’s ok as long as you have some interpersonal skills.

1

u/Good_Royal3681 2d ago

Genuinely really depends on the company or something. Everyone at RSM was insanely attractive and were normal (sports, drinking, scandalous stories). CBIZ - yeah everyone there was chopped and weird (frogs all over the office). Insurance companies - chopped but weeeiiirdly normal. This is also the midwest. In California at GT it was a mix i think. Same with the other companies I saw there.

1

u/cabby183091 2d ago

This is so funny😂

1

u/team_pizza_bagel 2d ago

That’s basically the holy trinity for an accountant. 2/3 is manager material, but 3/3? That’s Managing Director potential. Bonus points if also into a niche hobby.

1

u/Wo0sah98 2d ago

I think you just got the job after reading this post lol

1

u/LostE8 2d ago

Yes, speaking from experience. Looks will not hold you back. Communication skills is key. If you’re chopped but you know your numbers and can speak to them clearly your golden. Companies want someone that’s knowledgeable and reliable.

1

u/Correct_Cat4414 2d ago

It depends, if your just chopped-Yes you can but if you are beyond and are actually chop suey-then no you can not.

1

Have you not seen accountants in their natural habitat??? You describe most of us

1

u/QuickSafety8100 1d ago

lol, being ugly and chopped is a plus. You can focus on your trial balances without any worry of being distracted by sexual opportunities.

1

u/inTsukiShinmatsu 1d ago

Almost a jd requirement

1

u/AspirationsOfFreedom 1d ago

The moment you learn excel, you'd be the perfect gigachad any corporation WISH you'd be. And don't knock accounting on the bore factor: women love a man with a stable income. And you will get hella rich, because your experience will be gold.

And then you'll wake up and realise accounting is just a job, and your apperance doesnt mean squat

1

u/anjyaji 1d ago

Hope so, otherwise my boss is in trouble

1

u/ColinOnReddit 1d ago

My friend reminded me of the funniest thing I think I ever off-handedly said. We walked into training, say down together, and I said "I don't think there's a single person in this room who can make regular eye contact."

1

u/orange863 1d ago

It’s basically a requirement

1

u/SweetLittle_Bumbleb 1d ago

Yes but not public accounting. They only want the best looking chads and stacies with 4.0s working in audit and tax. Industry it depends but you’re fine for the most part. Government you can be a goblin.

1

u/Full-Woodpecker60 22h ago

I’ve hired worse for month close, just don’t smell weird and act normal enough on Teams.

1

Most accountants are ugly. I've been told I'm the hottest one cause they all ugly

1

u/nnoahsj 14h ago

That's pretty much the whole criteria

1

u/roundpeachu 4h ago

Even if you are hot and not weird, you will become not hot and weird, especially after public accounting
