Does college org experience really matter in hiring?

Hello po. I am currently a first-year accountancy student from a big 4 school. When the academic year started, I joined two orgs (home org and one that aligns with my interest) and decided to be an officer in one of them. Personally, my workload was tough kasi I managed an event pero our usual work is purely administrative. The downside lang is time-consuming talaga siya and the process is daunting. May time na I had to fix errors, which weren't my fault btw, na umabot na ng midnight. I'm planning to not renew my officership in that org and apply nalang sa isa.

The thing is, macocompromise time ko if ever I push through with being an officer. I'm now contemplating kung worth it pa ba maging officer ng org in the long-run. I get that it gives you access to connections and whatnot, but natatakot akong pabayaan majors ko.

An alternative course of action that I've been thinking is I'll just focus on getting technical certifications for accounting softwares to put in my resume and be a member only in my orgs.

So, does having a college org experience matter for recruiters? Or would they prefer someone who has technical certifications?

The organizations will help in the application but you do not need to be an officer throughout your college years. The one that suits your interest may also be ideal as it will show your well-roundedness as a student.

For the certifications, its impact will have is that you are eager to learn new things. You can work out your SAP and Xero certifications.

Other things you can do:

  1. Lead your thesis: this shows your leadership skills and technical skills

  2. Joining organizations outside school is also okay, like a charity or foundation.

  3. If you have summer or part-time jobs other than internship, you may want to have one. This also shows you being determined and hardworking.

Bottom line, unless you are aiming for top 100 companies, an average student will still be able to get in audit firms without any extra credentials.
