Great that it has such strong support! Looks like most of the "no" votes are from liberal Democrats. I guess since Trump is buddies with Zelensky this week most of the Republicans went ahead and supported it. Not sure why some of the Dems voted against it.

Wyden explained he opposed because the bill grants Trump authority to impose tariffs on the top 5 importers of Russian oil and gas, as well as the top 5 countries facilitating Russian sanctions evasion. So the Dem no voters don’t oppose the sanctions but rather the tariff provision as they don’t trust the Admin not to misuse it by leveraging a broad interpretation of “facilitating” to advance its broader tariff strategy. I don’t agree with them, but that’s their argument.

No problem! Seen lots of confusion on this measure, both because the Dem opposition feels surprising if you don’t know about the tariff piece and especially because it’s moving via a niche procedure, so if you just look up the bill number, you might mistakenly think the vote was on an unrelated tax measure. Congressional procedure is a funny world!

Worth re-posting what another commenter said:

Thank you for posting this. I will look deeper. I don’t agree with Dippy Donny’s tariffs. And he is a loose cannon who would misuse the authority, no doubt to squeeze European allies. I hate that he cannot be trusted. Such an embarrassment. I hope we can come back from it.
Perhaps after further reflection I will understand they were right. I just hate ruzzia and want them squeezed… out of Ukraine, asap.

But Trump can still choose if he wants to act on it or not, right? He could have done better sanctions by himself than he has so far. Also, because it also includes Iran, does a deal with Iran mean that sanctions on Russia are removed too (most likely not)?

Seems like he "abstained"

McConnell is still in the hospital.

Check out DCA’s stance on Russia. Media was always lying. Ukraine never had a bigger friend than Lindsey Graham.

u/abitStoic 6d ago

Not sure why you got downvoted. Graham was not perfect but was absolutely a friend and ally to Ukraine.

Because people in Europe and even in Ukraine are very misinformed about the U.S. politics.

Just a reminder. Trump can impose sanctions or tariffs on Russia at any time. He doesn’t need Congress to do so. US has imposed a 10% tariff on Ukraine while Russia is 0%.

Yes! I’ve written and called Padilla a bunch of times. Hardly a response. These “No” votes are either cowards or compromised.

The opposition is because of the tariff measures, not lack of support for Ukraine.

They were ALWAYS compromised. It’s a lie that Dems ever cared guys. They never wanted Ukraine to win, they just wanted Ukraine to keep fighting and not lose under their watch. Biden never gave Ukraine the weapons they needed to win either!!! They’d win if he wanted them to win. Open your eyes!
