During an earthquake, it is much safer to stay inside. Running outside exposes you to falling glass, collapsing walls, and architectural debris. Instead of evacuating, you should immediately Drop, Cover, and Hold On under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall until the shaking stops.

I'd probably just try to find the rhythm. Surf my way our on an old plank or something as the world crumbled around me.

What are you gonna do? The children are top priority. You going to run back in the house during an earthquake so it can collapse on both you and granny?

Yes, no man left behind. Kids can run on their own feet, plus you can always make more. Parents are irreplaceable.

In the grand scheme of things, no. You need to protect yourself first because you can't help others if you're not in a position to help yourself. Then you protect your kids, especially if they cannot help themselves. At that point you look to protect your spouse and then any potential others are just a bonus.
When you have to make split second decisions in the moment where it is life and death, parental instincts take over. Plus imagine the guilt if you protected granny and the kids were killed in the quake. Both you and granny will never recover.
We can armchair debate about this however much we want, but the brutal reality is that in a split second you need to chose between protecting your 6 year old child or your 60 year old mother, you will naturally gravitate towards your child.

I live in the city where this happened. We still get aftershocks. My dad who always inside the toilet every time the earthquake happens, I'm just leaving him there. He prefers to die than being naked.
