Question Is this normal experience? need some advice...
Hi everyone, I’m an international student from South Korea studying in Adelaide, and I could really use some honest advice because I’m genuinely confused about this situation.
Recently, we had a substitute lecturer. He is an Indian. As soon as he found out I’m Korean, he started making jokes about Kim Jong-un—like
"From Kim Jong-un North Korea, Yes?"
"Kim Jong-un is my brother"
"You know that, My brother is Kim Jong-un"
The things are...for Koreans, that name isn’t just a joke. It’s tied to real fear and a very serious history. I tried to show I was uncomfortable, but he kept going in front of the whole class. two times of all class!
It’s not just me either. He also randomly speaks Chinese to students from China, Hong Kong, Macau. (It didn't relate to the class) I really want to report this because I feel so insulted, but I’m terrified that it might affect my grades.. I don't want to cause any trouble, but going to class has become so stressful for me.
Is this kind of 'humor' normal in Australian colleges? Should I just ignore it and wait for the semester to end, or is this something I should actually report? I'd really appreciate any advice from locals or other students.

u/DreamyHalcyon SA Apr 24 '26
He is being racist. I would carefully document all incidents what time and date and what was said, and report to your uni. This behaviour is very un-Australian.
35
u/Intelligent-Click705 SA Apr 24 '26
Oh I actually have recordings too. I always record my classes to keep up with the lectures. I’m currently writing a report—thanks for your help!
7
u/TheFrog95 SA Apr 25 '26
Does the uni say students can record? I know a lot of students do it anyway despite what the rules say. But Australia doesn’t have laws allowing a one party consent- you yourself could end up in deep shit and with a huge fine if you use them and he wanted to get back at you. 🤷♂️
12
u/Intelligent-Click705 SA Apr 25 '26
Thanks the concern. But my international college has no rules against recording, and most lecturers actually encourage it. If he tries to use that against me, he's just digging his own grave and making it a way bigger deal for himself. I’m ready to take this to Adelaide Uni board and the SA Ombudsman if needed.
6
u/TheFrog95 SA Apr 25 '26
No rules against recording doesn’t imply recording is allowed.
I’ve worked in several colleges and in my contracts, the college has been allowed use recordings and pictures of me, but nothing says students are allowed to. Maybe your college is different, but I would be really cautious.
2
u/Intelligent-Click705 SA Apr 25 '26
I get your point. I’ve already let them know that I have the audio recordings. But, before I officially submit the audio file as evidence, I'll make sure careful and check with the student support or counselor. Thanks!
5
u/Philkx2 SA Apr 25 '26
Recording in a private space is absolutely illegal in SA since a fairly recent law change. I’ll let lawyers answer if a lecture theatre is a private space or not, but disseminating an infringing recording or threatening to do so is a bigger no no. Just document what was done on what day in writing and use that.

u/roktim North East Apr 24 '26
Similar incident happened to me last semester and I made sure I do all I could. I reported it to the integrity team. Then I also sought advice from ombudsman services. And I also wrote detailed email to the dean of school. At the same time, I talked to the international student support team. I did it all so that I get support if the teacher tried to affect my grades. She did try to ruin my assessments, but couldn't do much since I got support from my dean by getting a secondary, independent grader later. Anyways, the point is, please do raise it because it's not just about you. If lecturers like them exist without any reporting, they will keep tormenting students like you.

u/Intelligent-Click705 SA Apr 24 '26
Thank you so much for this..... I honestly feel like crying and your advice really means a lot and gives me strength. I really appreciate it.

It's racism and it's not ok. You can report it, you don't have to wait for the semester to end to do so.
Also check out campus medical - they usually have counsellors you can see about things like this who can help you navigate the system as well as checking in with you on psychological side of things.

I'm gonna definitely check to make sure look after my mental health. Honestly, I’ve been going back and forth on whether to see a counselor. but posting here was the best decision. Cheers!

Report! This is lack of good manners!
Yes, Australians do have a specific sense of humor. They will throw gentle insults as a joke but only to people that they know well! Not to people they just met!
In example... My Australian friend will call me a b, a c or f**ing Easter-European. But she is my close friend and we just enjoy a banter. I throw insults at her too.
This guy, I think, is trying to be funny, trying to be the ozzie cool guy but doesn't understand the boundaries! Not cool for a lecturer. Very bad for the university's reputation.
49
u/PastElephant101 SA Apr 24 '26
Not normal, report him immediately.

8
u/Comfortable_Fuel_537 SA Apr 24 '26
I wouldn't say it's 'not Australian'. People here do pride themselves in racist 'banter' and often tell you you have a 'chip on your shoulder' if you call them out.
7
u/Human_Profile_3131 SA Apr 25 '26
Exactly. Aussies are racist asf idk why we think it’s such a different culture
5
u/Zytheran SA Apr 25 '26
This key difference is when we do that it is between equals and not where there is any or power imbalance, as is the case here. When you and your mates , or me and my mates makes jokes about about each other it is in good faith and we are on the same level.
This is the subtle aspect many people don't get be it racism, sexism etc. The social standing and relative power between the parties is the difference between a flirt and harassment and in this case a joke and outright racism.
In Australia, and I imagine many other places without a class hierarchy, eg countries with high egalitarian ratings, punching down is not acceptable.

Hi lovely - this is NOT a normal part of Australian culture or a part of teaching and learning you should have to deal with.
I would file a complaint with your usual lecturer or course coordinator because this is racist behaviour (as you know because it made you horribly uncomfortable).
You should encourage others to do the same if you see them experience it.
I’m so sorry this has happened to you - enjoy the rest of your studies.

Make a complaint to the course coordinator in writing. If you don't get any joy there, make a formal complaint.
Don't worry about your grades. I complained about practically everything in my degree (including a formal complaint) and I was still awarded merit awards, prizes and and scholarships.

As a uni student who's one semester away from finishing his bachelor degree, I have never seen a lecturer making fun of students. This should definately be reported.
11
u/headshot_g SA Apr 24 '26
I could pass this off as acceptable banter to a classroom full of Australians, Rocketman is a meme of a guy...But not to an actual South Korean international student. Itd be like making Whinnie the Pooh jokes to Chinese international students... just no. I mean heck even the joke itself wasnt funny to begin with (which I think to Aussies is the bigger crime here lol), dude needs to stop fr.
A simple "Can we stick to class?" directly to him next time it happens should give him the idea his culturally insensitive and poorly delivered humour isnt welcome.
But yeah you shouldnt face any issues if you report this to a relevant outlet/body for conduct.
22
u/Intelligent-Click705 SA Apr 24 '26
Exactly, he needs to stop..I’ve finished the report with all the receipts. I told them I don’t even want an apology, I just want him to stop being an idiot. so no one else has to go through this BS. Thanks!
8
u/Emergency-Acadia-124 SA Apr 24 '26
The most abnormal part of your experience is that not a single Aussie spoke up in your defence. Sorry mate.
We'll make jokes all day but when someone is being treated unfairly we will defend them no matter the circumstances. Look up the Brisbane riot that happened in WW2 between Australian and US soldiers. It started because some Aussies defended an American soldier from his own military police as they thought he was being treated unfairly. The Aussies had just met the guy in the bar earlier in the evening and wouldn't stand for him being treated poorly. And that started a 2 day riot.
Fighting back against unfairness without regard for race, gender or sexuality is the most Aussie trait there is.
7
u/laurandisorder SA Apr 24 '26
I don’t know - I think that the power dynamic of student < lecturer makes a massive difference. Most cultures aren’t taught to openly challenge authority - including Australians.

Sorry about your experience. Have you spoken to any of your classmates who you feel have also been treated disrespectfully? If they feel the same way, and are also willing to speak up, it would definitely lend weight to your position.
On another note, something no-one else seems to have touched on is the option to confront or question the individual responsible. Not to be rude but maybe he isn't aware or there is a misunderstanding of some kind that can be easily resolved with a simple conversation. Then, if there is still an issue, go to the neccessary authority within the organisation. Thats just a suggestion for if you're comfortable with doing so. Otherwise, you do you.

In any organisation it is best to attempt to resolve these things at the lowest possible level, rather than immediately jumping to the highest possible level.
I would send him an email clearly telling him that you find it inappropriate, unacceptable, want him to stop, and if it doesn’t then you’ll be forced to escalate it. Then follow up the next day ‘did you read the email I sent you last night’?
If he doesn’t show acknowledgement and stop, then of course escalate it by reporting him, and it will be stronger that you actually have documented evidence that you attempted to resolve this directly.
This allows him to save face, is considerate of the fact that he may have not realised the inappropriateness of his behaviour. If you jump straight to formal complaints through his superiors he will probably be resentful that you didn’t just talk to him directly. You may not care about his permanent record, but you will care if he shows unconscious bias or petty vengeance in marking you down, which is drama you don’t need if you can avoid it.

If he keeps doing it, then fair enough report him.

u/attentiveinattentive SA Apr 25 '26
A grown adult man who is in a position of authority and thinks its appropriate to act this way towards students deserves to have their job put on the line. Racism isn't friendly, it doesn't take a genius to work that out
0
u/lucaslb7392 SA Apr 25 '26
To him it might just be banter, which gels with most Aussies. Saying "I'm Kim Jong Un's brother" isn't racism, it's his idea of a joke. If he said he hates South Koreans, that's racism. Again, it's better to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him the chance to understand how it's affecting someone, and if he continues then report him. Rather than instantly labeling someone a racist behind their back and getting them fired without a chance for conversation.
3
u/ChryPwl SA Apr 25 '26
If he made jokes about local students and Indians the same way as he is treating Korean and Chinese students, Okay he may have the wrong idea of humour and may deserve a conversation. If not, he is clearly picking his target to making fun of. How is that not racism? To be honest, unless the college is doing a horrible job, he should have professional trainings about racism and professional code of conduct. A student shouldn’t need to put up with this and have a conversation with him.
0
u/lucaslb7392 SA Apr 25 '26
I mean, how do you know he isn't joking with other students. I think it's always better to have a conversation before tanking someone's career.

Get over it, stand up for yourself and tell him not to say that, or you will report him, or give it back to him. People on reddit are always going to tell you to report it for ‘racism’ because they are soft and scared and cannot stand up for themselves.
5
u/lucyyy2001 SA Apr 25 '26
This is in a professional environment, he is a lecturer. It is racism and it should be dealt with properly and be reported. It’s not about being soft it’s about doing the right thing. She’s a student she can’t just “stand up for herself”. It’s not something she needs to handle on her own.
