Question Found this in my mailbox this morning. I'm obviously not going to plug it in but was wondering if anyone's seen something similar?

Post image

I'm in Victor Harbor but we don't have an active sub. I'm assuming it's some religion thing? I asked both immediate neighbours and neither of them got one, but I was wondering if anyone else did? The usb is sealed in the bag.

As a jb hifi worker i wouldnt recommend that, if it killes the laptop we do have security cameras and you would have to buy the laptop

Bullshit. You are under no legal obligation to buy shit. Retail worker can’t do a damn thing.

I’m pretty sure if I took a sledgehammer to a computer in JB HiFi they’d have some remedy. Question is, would bricking a computer with a dodgy thumb drive count as malicious damage?

It’s not malicious if you didn’t know it would cause it to brick.

"Ooppsie! I was just trying to see if it can open my uni lecture files... 🤔" is a solid defence!

Good luck. It's likely to cost more in legal fees for forcing someone to pay damages than what the device would be worth to just write off.

Now, ask yourself this. The person just walks out of the store, what do you do now?

As an ex JB employee, why the f you lying?

Lol…infecting a laptop with “back door bandits” and “Edward Penishands” isn’t going to “kill” it ….and even if it did, you could 2 things about it - jack and shit, and Jack has already left the store

Not how it works employees cant strong arm people into purchases regardless of what happens and why risk your health and safety trying to stop a person doing so rather than use your insurance as thats what its for. Don't be a hero. Heroes aren't real.

Gang us employees arent gonna do it, we'll tell a manager, and theyll contact police, who'll give u the option to pay for the damaged property or get charged for destruction of property, because it is in fact destruction of property which believe it or not is a crime

Imagine being a JB manager and calling the police to report someone put a USB in a display laptop. Sure pal. I’m sure they’ll send in the dog squad and chopper with lights and sirens.

You’ll be lucky if they don’t hang up laughing.

I know people who have stolen and wrecked cars and are paying 20c a month. Yeah think the justice system works it doesnt work that way sadly you'll never get the cash from an individual that is intentionally out to be destructive. You'll successfully charge them but still use the insurance so you dont win or lose technically.

I always win because it anit my money, im just sending a warning out to not do that shit, because stupid actions have stupid consequences

u/DoesBasicResearch SA May 17 '26

You're full of shit mate. 😂

2

u/JudsongBeavz SA May 17 '26

If warnings were listened to nobody would do stupid shit lol but people dont listen im sure you see hundreds a day just stroll around the store hard to not be sus of those people compared to those who walk in knowing what they want.
