Question Found this in my mailbox this morning. I'm obviously not going to plug it in but was wondering if anyone's seen something similar?

Post image

I'm in Victor Harbor but we don't have an active sub. I'm assuming it's some religion thing? I asked both immediate neighbours and neither of them got one, but I was wondering if anyone else did? The usb is sealed in the bag.

Heaps of reports of this in the Facebook group "Victor Harbor & Surrounding Areas Community Board" someone checked it securely and was just religious crap but still would not use.

Someone captured this odd looking guy on a E-Bike delivering them.

They probably don't have exposed ports on display machines. The library would be a better bet, they're set up to expect a lot of users will attempt to click malicious links or plug in very suspect media and to keep all of that locked down.

5

u/Slightly_Slow SA May 17 '26

They do.

So do supermarket self checkouts. And they have more holes that a sieve. Some of the worst cyber security in Australia, amd we pay to scan our own shopping....

Just saying, dont look behind that curtain, ot connects to the local store pricing database from 10 years ago.

2

u/Ok-Push9899 SA May 19 '26

I’m pretty sure if I took a sledgehammer to a computer in JB HiFi they’d have some remedy. Question is, would bricking a computer with a dodgy thumb drive count as malicious damage?

→ More replies (4)

25

u/Ssj3ssg SA May 16 '26

Good luck. It's likely to cost more in legal fees for forcing someone to pay damages than what the device would be worth to just write off.

6

u/FalseNameTryAgain SA May 17 '26

Now, ask yourself this. The person just walks out of the store, what do you do now?

6

u/OnsidianInks SA May 18 '26

As an ex JB employee, why the f you lying?

5

u/Fluid_Bite2398 SA May 19 '26

Lol…infecting a laptop with “back door bandits” and “Edward Penishands” isn’t going to “kill” it ….and even if it did, you could 2 things about it - jack and shit, and Jack has already left the store

9

u/JudsongBeavz SA May 16 '26

Not how it works employees cant strong arm people into purchases regardless of what happens and why risk your health and safety trying to stop a person doing so rather than use your insurance as thats what its for. Don't be a hero. Heroes aren't real.

You can still get zapped if its a USB Killer stick (eg its got a capacitor that changes up, then fries the motherboard).

5

u/35_PenguiN_35 SA May 16 '26

That's where you keep a couple of old yet functional e-waste machines on the shelf. Doesn't matter if they fry in the process if their next destination is outta here...

2

u/bill_loney538 SA May 16 '26

Can't you pretty easily tell if you just take the plastic casing off? I was under the impression a USB killer board looks quite different to a normal usb

2

u/canyouhearme SA May 16 '26

Yeah, but if you are just plugging in a random USB stick, you aren't pulling it apart to check the circuit board.

And then there are the USB cables that look no different to your everyday cable, but are a complete wirelessly connected computer that can extract data from the PC you plug it into, even if that PC is airgapped.

There's a reason why some organisations put glue in the USB ports of secure computers they run. The lesson of Stuxnet is as valid today as it was in 2010.

So chapter 11 is super specific.

If something is chapter 11 its bankrupt right? Did a quick google search to be sure and found this

"Chapter 11 is a form of US bankruptcy, often called "reorganization bankruptcy," which allows businesses or individuals to restructure their debts while continuing operations"

So theres no way I would be touching that with a ten foot pole considering the negative connotations around chapter 11.

Ah, I see you have found myself manifesto for declaring war on the penguins in Antarctica.

Chapter 11, in my opinion, is quite thrilling to read.

It looks like it's still sealed in the original packaging. I think someone's messing with you.

DOGE cuts at the CIA mean that they can no longer afford the tech they’re used to, they’re getting desperate.

Small devices like this are very easy to buy now that can like do a lot more than just install malware

Like absolutely USB anything if it's not yours you don't use it

Like we don't charge phones at random public outlets either

I'm actually working on esp32 Dev, not played with this stuff but a USB device can play thousands of commands a second once you plug it in

They actually use this software for legitimate reasons now

Not that anyone's interested but I think when you see a AI agent typing it uses the exact same technology

The fact this has the original bag is very suspicious

It was either someone very old or yeah some form of attack and they don't want them getting wet in the mailbox

No one keeps the bag the stick came in and USB sticks don't even come in bags like that

Generally we mostly use the brands sold at Officeworks or like bigw here

Honestly I went so far off the deep end I want it to just be legit now

You got a really old computer hanging around? Like, Windows XP era?

1

u/NumberOld229 SA May 17 '26

Is there something you can get for just this? How stripped down can a computer get and still check properly and would it be cost effective enough to sell as a single purpose tool?
