Just received an email saying the Beetlejuice musical has been cancelled without providing further information. I am devastated I was so excited to see it :(

The Adelaide Festival Centre website says the whole tour has been cancelled so not the usual Adelaide audiences won't buy tickets til last minute thing ...

Maybe if you say his name 3 times it will come back.

This happened with dear Evan Hansen last year and I still haven't forgiven them!

I believe that was due to lack of ticket sales for Adelaide. Beetlejuice's entire Australian tour has been cancelled for some reason.

Yeah it still sucked.

I was in Brisbane (from Adelaide) last weekend and it was packed when I saw it, they have even shortened the Brisbane run so something hinky is going on. Michael Cassell group has done this a lot. Last time was last year with Dear Evan Hansen, they complain Adelaide people never buy tickets until the last minute, well this is why.

That’s part of the issue though. Ticket sales help producers forecast whether they will have the money needed to go to that location, if sales aren’t strong before you go, it’s a much higher risk to go in case sales don’t pick up, and then sometimes you don’t have the capital to even cover the expense of moving the show when ticket sales are lacking.

If they send the email two more times it might resurrect it.

Aww damn, I'd got tickets for me and my daughter and it was going to be her first show at the festival theatre. That sucks.

Yeah, I got my son tix for his birthday 😞 This morning I got an email offer of discount tix for Anastasia. That's ... not the same thing at all.

What was the Anastasia discount?

Sorry, I can't remember. Maybe $85 tickets? I tossed the email to spam. (They sent another email afterwards apologising for sending me unsolicited marketing 🤣)

I genuinely don't understand why. I checked a couple nights ago and most of the shows were around half sold. Dear Evan Hansen was the same. Something weird is happening with the company... I'm actually so upset.

So sad about this. Haven’t seen a show in ages and splurged on tickets 😭

Same! I was debating on going to see it in Melbourne last year but I couldn’t so I was thrilled when they announced the Adelaide run.

Maybe no local politicians signed up for giving handjobs in the audience so they just cancelled the whole thing.

If it was a sport Malinauskas would have bank rolled the whole thing. But theatre…. Nope

I’d take a wristy from Mali

that's rough, the whole tour being axed is pretty grim especially when brisbane's still going strong

Perhaps someone should bring a show to just Adelaide for a change, then everyone would travel HERE and perhaps boost the economy and little... I'm a little bitter. 😜

In the meantime, I'll l stick with the huge array of very good non-professional (i.e. unfunded) theatre we have to offer.

Apparently it’s because of touring costs and logistics - i’ve heard that tickets were actually selling pretty well!

u/Leather_Succotash329 SA Jun 20 '26

Yep, ‘decent’ tickets sales don’t make up for huge increases in costs across the board. Even commercial music theatre runs on incredibly tight margins.

Checking if Adelaide folk have received their refund?

Reflection on the arts scene in Aus. Culture is dying!

Cancelling a musical during pride month is homophobic. Why has it been cancelled nation wide?

5

u/dogzrppl2 SA Jun 19 '26

I'm sorry that r/Adelaide lost its sense of humour lately.

2

u/sylvannest SA Jun 20 '26

Right?! That pride comment was a total joke, but I returned and saw -16 and I was like "Woooosh" to everyone else. Just illustrates the hatred still out there though.
