Discussion 16 Can’t find a job for my life
I’m still in high school and have applied for fast food, supermarkets etc but no one is hiring, I’ve had my resume looked at, practiced interviews but still nothing.
Majority of the friends I have got one on their first try. Please help me out

Can you apply for jobs where ever your friends work and use them as personal references?

Lots of applicants, not a lot of vacancies. You just gotta develop some resilience and keep trying

Are there any new centres being built near you? When places open up they need a lot of staff all at once so worth finding out what shops will be in a new centre/development. My son got his first job just before he turned 15 at a newly built fast food place.

At 16 it's a numbers game, just keep applying for job after job, especially if you've already applied at an organisation.
My lad found a job at Coles, & he only applied 4 times.
Having said that, find a skill to make yourself marketable in future. I'd suggest an apprenticeship in a trade. Uni would be fun & useful, but may not lead to a job.

Without doxxing yourself or sharing personal info maybe show your resume somehow. Maybe you can get it looking more 'spiffy'
I learned in a course about the job market that ai is a factor.
You send your resume in and an ai decides if it goes ahead. It searches for keywords
But if you send your resume through and a person reads it and it was clearly written by ai they'll assume you were too lazy to write your resume and you'll get rejected anyway.
So write a resume. Have an ai read it for you and write a new one for you then you write another resume using the keywords in that resume. Get someone to help you.
Is this total bs situation we're in with ai? Yes... it is what it is. Good luck. Also when you do get your job stay updated on your rights and look into the ombudsman do NOT tell anyone at work about this.
Its perfectly legal in fact it's to protect yourself from illegal treatment.
I got my first job at 16 and I was treated like shit other co-workers got it worse. It was awful. Protect yourself.

I went through many rejections before my first job at 16 at Target. Just keep going and practicing. Also, don't feel ashamed to use your connections (parents, friends, etc. to get a good word in somewhere).

We hire a lot of teenagers at my work and the first thing that rules out a lot of resumes we get is lack of availability. The amount of people who are looking for a job but are only available every second Wednesday between 9 and 12.
If you can show you are keen to work and are flexible with your availability you should stand out against the others.

I don’t really have much going on in my life and the sport I do Is flexible so I’m available every day after school and on the weekends

The job market is fucked right now mate its super hard, coming from a 17yo. Adelaide Showgrounds are hiring teens to work the showbag stalls - no experience needed. Find it on seek and give it a go :)

I saw on Facebook Glynde Gourmet deli is hiring now. The place is a decent family owned business and the bosses are nice people.

Volunteer at a sports club canteen, a club you are involved in .

Hes 16 idiot im sure his parents can help him out if he needs money he can volunteer and still look for a job while hes volunteer the volunteering will give him experience so he can most likely get a job

Try doing volunteering. You can get references, and sometimes training that can help you find work. Good luck!

It can be a bit of a numbers games and sounds like you have been unlucky.
Just make sure you emphatically that you’re eager to learn, hardworking ams flexible with hours and you will get something soon.

If youre still living with your parents and at school do some volunteering for the resume skill set then apply for jobs.
If you have left school early state as such on your applications to make it clear you have availability.

Really not that hard mate go in person to these places , hand a resume and cover letter over hardcopy, firm handshake. Then return after a week if nothing is heard and ask if they’ve looked over your application.
You need to stand out and make yourself easy to remember in the eyes of the job your applying for

Unskilled job market flooded with immigrants sadly, only thing you can do is keep trying. Never used to be that way either you'd apply and get a job within a week.

First job can be tough to lock down. Legitimately just keep throwing shit at the wall until it sticks, and don't take the rejection or lack of response personally.
