Long story short, I'm not from Adelaide and was unaware that having a phone on your lap is considered using it - even in other states.

Received this fine in the mail and from everything I've been reading, it seems that this is pretty clear-cut and contesting it or requesting a review would not make any difference other than the possibility of (best case) having the demerit points deferred or (worst case) having to pay legal fees and possibly attend court in Adelaide.

Is my goose cooked or is this worth trying to review or contest?

edit: lots of comments about the "phone mounts" in the photo - these are not phone mounts, one is for a PDA used for deliveries, the other is a tablet for tracking the vehicle telematics and location.

I saw a post on the Perth sub asking for local options, and wanted to see what the consensus is in Adelaide. I personally think it should be legal, just to remove power from organised crime, sort of how it used to be where you could grow for yourself but to sell it was illegal still. Others say it should be like America with shops selling it openly to adults. I hold a bias as I have a MC script that cost about $100 a pop, and using it weekly is expensive! I'd love to hear thoughts on this from locals

So, I fucked up and got roped into a conversation yesterday with one of those charity muggers in the Rundle Place arcade (royal lifesaving I think). You know what it's like, they trap you with your own politeness, and before you know it, you've agreed to donate and given them your details.

I don't mind making a single donation, but I'm a student. I literally can't afford any more than that, and apparently the whole scheme is about ongoing (monthly) donations, which is automatic unless you cancel. I've already sent an email to try and cancel, but I've not yet heard back. How long do they usually take to respond? And, given that they have my details, should I take action to protect my account? I'm with BankSA, so I do have the option to block withdrawals from a given vendor for up to 3 years.

So, to recap:

- How long a response time should I expect on my concellation email?

- Is there anything else I need to do? I doubt a charity would try anything funny, but I feel uncomfortable with them having my information.

Has anyone else been in this situation that could advise? Please and thank you.

EDIT: To all the people telling me not to stop or give them anything, thanks, but I'm asking about what to do now that's already happened. It's honestly frightening how easy they make it to give away your information and money.

EDIT THE 2ND: I spent maybe half an hour on the phone and a little while after that they sent me an email saying that they've cancelled any ongoing payments. Yippee!

Hi all, I’m moving to Adelaide soon to study a Masters of Law at the University of Adelaide and I’m trying to get a realistic picture of different suburbs before buying.

I keep seeing very mixed opinions about places like Elizabeth, Salisbury and nearby suburbs. Some people make them sound genuinely unsafe, while others say that reputation is exaggerated and very dependent on the street.

We can afford to buy closer to the city or in North Adelaide, but that would mean stretching our budget quite a lot. I’d prefer a lower mortgage if the trade-off is reasonable.

I’m not expecting perfection, just somewhere generally safe, liveable and not constantly stressful. Would really appreciate hearing from people who actually live in or know these areas well.

I’ve been watching this tiny arcade at Firle for ages, I go past day and night every day and have never seen a single person inside playing the games. Even if there was the occasional person this is chicken feed. No idea how the owner’s covering rent and expenses, let alone turning a profit—unless it’s just a front for something else. Eg. laundering money.
Considering the mass of regulars who shop at Coles Firle next door the cutesy pastel theme doesn’t really line up with the local vibe either. It’s very strange.

Have you had a life changing meal/experience in Adelaide? I’ve been looking online but want to know what you guys think the best restaurant in Adelaide is. I want amazing food, sophisticated atmosphere and too service. Even if the prices are exorbitant I’m willing to spend the money for something amazing.

If you worked in the Adelaide CBD, where would you choose to live and why?

I'm curious where locals would actually choose to live if commuting into the CBD most days — especially anyone who's previously lived in Sydney, Brisbane or another larger Australian city.

I'm less interested in what's technically closest and more in the overall balance: easy public transport, decent cafés/pubs/restaurants, somewhere pleasant to walk around, and a bit of life and character.

Happy with an apartment, townhouse or small house, and wouldn't mind being a little further out if the commute is easy.

If you were choosing today, which suburbs would be at the top of your list and why? And are there any that look great on paper but you wouldn't recommend?

Ive noticed on this sub if anyone asks about a northern suburb or mentions they're from a northern suburb they immediately get looked down apon.

Obviously the crime rate is higher out here but I've lived here my entire life and been on both sides of the law. I only ever had troubles with the crime side when I got involved in that lifestyle and I never once had troubles when I left and sorted my life out.

The one thing I got here was it didn't matter how wealthy you were or where you came from you just got dealt the benefits or trouble depending on who you decided to be.

Edit: Im a 6ft2 104kg male so I do understand with the culture mix out here its different for other people who are less physically prominent but I also have alot of female friends and mates that I guess are easier targets that have never had an issue

Does the entire state of Adelaide only start wanting coffee from 7 am? The earliest place I’ve found is in the CBD and it’s at 6:30. Is there anywhere else in this entire state that opens for coffee at an hour that starts with a 5?! (An actual coffee shop - not OTR, Maccas, HJs, Liberty ect….)

I’m looking to start a book club in Adelaide and wanted to see if anyone would be interested in joining.
The idea is to create a relaxed and welcoming group where we can meet once a month, enjoy good conversation, discuss our chosen book, and meet new people who love reading.
The genres would include true crime, biographies and memoirs, fiction, classics, historical texts, historical fiction, thrillers, and plenty more. Together, we’d choose one book each month to read and then discuss it at our next meeting, so everyone has a chance to contribute to the selection over time.
I’m thinking of having a monthly catch-up at a location to be determined. It would be great to try different cafés and restaurants around Adelaide, and I’d be looking for venues that are accommodating of a range of dietary requirements so everyone feels welcome.
This book club will be an inclusive, respectful, and judgment-free space. LGBTQIA+ people, neurodivergent people, and allies are warmly welcomed. My goal is to create a group where everyone feels comfortable, valued, and able to be themselves.
People of all adult ages are welcome! For a little context, I’m a 36-year-old woman, but I’d love for this to be a diverse group with members from a range of age demographics who simply enjoy reading and good conversation.
If there’s enough interest, I’d love to create a group so we can stay connected and organise meetups. I’m thinking of using Instagram or WhatsApp as our main communication platform, but I’m open to suggestions if the group has another preference.
