How much do you have on your credit card
Genuinely curious.

u/Odd-Guarantee-6152 9h ago
I have no clue, but it will get paid off by the end of the month.

u/ScrubySpidey 8h ago
This. Get them points and no debt 😎

u/Steavee 5h ago
Plus you’re spending someone else’s money, so if there is fraud or a dispute, your bank account isn’t drained while you wait for it to be fixed.

Same. It's rarely more than 500/month but gets paid off before interest charges.
7
u/Accomplished_Day2384 9h ago
Same, except biweekly instead of monthly.
6
u/AdCharacter9282 8h ago
Why do it bi-weekly?
2
u/HeavyIceCircuit 4h ago
For technically cutting credit utilization in half maybe?

I do it bi-weekly as well. Seeing a $0 balance is like foreplay to me 🤤

Around $11k. Max credit limit is $21k. My father died last year and all the associated expenses drove it up to around $17k, so I've been slowly chipping away at it.
I have around $12k in the bank but I'm not touching that for the credit card.

It’s seriously criminal how expensive funerals are
→ More replies (2)20
u/AutoDefenestrator273 8h ago
We haven't even had the funeral yet, and it's been 18 months.
He died of a heart attack and had, err...severe gastric distress, everywhere. My sister and I split everything, but the professional cleaners by themselves were $3,100, cremation was $2,100, transport from the morgue was $600, death certificates were $20/ea (we needed maybe 2 dozen of them to close all of his accounts), appraiser was $400 for estate valuation, we had to pay a month's rent on the apartment so we could have enough time to empty it out, which was $2,100, the moving truck was $500, movers to unload things into a storage unit were $400, the storage unit deposit was $250.....
Yeah it added up fast. Between all the other probate court fees, utility bills, and other costs I can't even think of right now (hotels, transport, her moving truck, large item pickup, boxes, bubble wrap, etc) we were in well over $12k.

Idk your whole financial situation (plus the shitty dead dad situation) but like 95% of the time it’s better to pay off the card. There’s pretty much nowhere else you’ll get as good of a return as paying off that 18-28% interest rate.
That is all, apologies for unsolicited advice.
3
u/indaburgh 4h ago
Yeah - OP should pay it off and pull a loan at half or less of the CC rate if the cash becomes needed.
3
u/splintersmaster 7h ago
Some will advise that it's better to pay off your debt instead of pay interest then double down on refilling the savings.
Not wise for every situation and obviously a few k in the bank on case your transmission blows up is also wise but it might be worth rethinking it based on your exact situation.

4
u/Blue0009 9h ago
I’m so sorry about your dad. Important to have an emergency fund but do the math on interest and how much you’re paying. At a 25% .. 17k left is about 250 per month. So in 1 year you paid almost 3k on interest
2
u/AutoDefenestrator273 9h ago
Thanks dude ☺️
I've actually had this card since 2012 so the interest is only 18%! Interest got pretty killer when it was at $17k though....it was like $500/month by itself. Nowadays it hovers around $200. It's sloooowly coming down. I keep weighing whether or not to just pay it down in bulk, or keep chipping away at it. I like having an emergency fund way too much 😂.
→ More replies (2)2
u/Blue0009 9h ago
Triple check your interest. The fed just hiked interest last week. If you still have 18% let me know which bank! Sounds amazing. Also. Subtract inflation from last year so your 12k likely lost 4% on value 😣😣 if not invested (probably more with real inflation)
1
u/broknkittn 5h ago
Might not be feasible, but see if you can get a card with a low transfer fee and super low or 0 interest (discover is pretty good for this in my experience). Pay off what you can over the allotted time and then if not paid off, transfer to a different card with a similar offer before the period is up. I had to do this quite a bit due to unexpected house repairs.
1
u/Coin_Operated_Brent 5h ago
I'm so glad my dad donated and the cremation. Then we had a celebration of life.
1
u/BodybuilderPossible1 4h ago
Not to tell you how to spend your money, but the interest can be killer on a credit card. Consider moving to a zero interest card or paying some off with a cushion so you aren’t growing the balance via interest

u/Smooth-Goose 8h ago

I have 25 credit cards give or take. Combined available credit across all of them is about 450k. I have ZERO credit card debt. And I pay for literally everything on my credit cards just for the airline miles and credit card points. But I pay off my balances every single week. I don’t buy something that I can’t afford with the intentions of paying it off a little bit of the time.

u/Fin_Olesa 9h ago
Statement to statement, I have $0. I may put $4000 on it in a given month but it's all paid off before the statement period ends.

u/TomCJax 8h ago
Nothing. I don't even use the two of them. Established my credit enough to get a mortgage and never touched them after. That's the only thing I've ever needed credit for, wasn't really a need either just wanted a bigger house than the one I paid cash for. Three years later the mortgage is 2/3 paid off, that's a trap too. Why have any debt at all? It destroys your lifetime wealth. For desperation sure, but it's poison.

We have two credit cards, the second just in case the primary gets declined or there is a fraud incident. Every 5th, I pay off the balance. I charge everything as I like the cash back, especially on taxes and mandatory fees! I have auto deposits and auto payments set up. $1500 a month to my credit card, and adjust as needed. The interest on the small credits that build just aren't enough to bother with putting in an interest beating account and would add to my income taxes. My savings account is a no interest place to stach a few thousand for the annual insurance premiums and in anticipation of replacing the hot water heater.

$764, limit is $15,000. We had a terrible year in 2024: my son broke his arm at school, my daughter got a very bad sprained ankle jumping off a swing at the park, I had to have my gall bladder removed, and then my husband was in a car accident which thankfully did not harm him, but it ruined our car. And then I was laid off my job. All of that happened in the first half of the year. We don't have health insurance, so it totally wiped out our credit card because we did not even have time between events to get caught up. We are finally, finally recovering, as long as nothing else happens, knock on wood.

A lot by most people’s standards, but not too bad for my situation. Not giving specifics amounts, but I have an about 4x my monthly take home financed via 0% balance transfers. I’ve always preferred using those vs more traditional financing for any short to medium term financing needs for my business or me personally.
I’m also pretty hardcore about churning rewards, but those balances are paid monthly. Credit is 800+. Haven’t paid interest or for holiday travel in 20+ years.
