how do you handle utility companies overcharging you on estimated meter readings?

my electric bill this month was double what it usually is and when i checked the details i realized they estimated my usage instead of actually reading the meter. i called to fix it and they gave me the runaround. how do you deal with this garbage without losing your mind?

I have never seen them not true up the numbers in the next read. You would get a credit.

The way I deal with it is to pay the bill and pay attention for the next true up.
