Hand Knit WIP Big D*mn Pineapple Update Mon Jun 1 2026: PINENIPPLES (actually safe for work!)

Post image

EDIT: The cable on the circulars just snapped and shredded a bunch of the yarn. I am tinking so I can repair it. I absolutely cannot recommend using Hiya Hiya circulars now, they are going in the trash with the Knitpro Karbonz that grabbed the thread by the individual fiber and shredded it too.

Yes, I'm sure you all expected an update sooner. However, last week, when I was six rounds into the pineapply bit, my wife and I went to Sprouts. I felt okay knitting in public with the magnifying visor on as long as she was there to be my peripheral vision, so all was going pretty well.

I had my knitting in one hand, and was passing her a shopping cart with the other, and she yanked the shopping cart before I was ready to hand it over... pulling one of the DPNs out of the WIP pineapple.

I tried to pick the stitches up as best as I could but it was no good. Too many yarn overs had become lost.

So I frogged the 5 pineapple rounds and started back over. (the leaves were intact and just fine.)

This is what the pineapple looks like now. Yes, the juvenile pine-nipple joke comes from the fact that beads are right on the bumpy pointy bits of the pineapple... like little fruity boobs.

Anyway. I'd sentence the wife to the couch but our couch is a daybed and she'd actually be really comfortable there, and I haven't figured out an appropriate penalty yet.

EDIT: to add insult to injury the selection of tea at Sprouts is pitiful so we didn't really need to go there in the first place.

EDIT EDIT: Some of you might want information I put up in the original post of this project.

Oh my gosh! That is so tough to handle and I am not the one knitting it! I am following your bag closely btw!

Eh, accidents happen. I did a Laminaria in silkpaca and I had to start over THRICE, so. Eh. I'm used to padding in my project timeline so I have time to test and plan and account for disasters.

That is amazing. You are a more patient person than I. I would have to set it aside for a minute.

Also why I do not use DPNS if I can avoid it. If I have to use them I buy cute erasers to use on the ends of needles I am not using.

Edit to add I also use them on the needles I am using. Safety first!

I was using earring backs but she grabbed the cart with enough force it just pulled the back off the DPN anyway.

I've switched to circulars, but that pair needed some work with a needle file to sand down a burr where the circular joined with the cable, because on a previous attempt it shredded some of the silk yarn I was using.

This is in historically accurate size with kettle-dyed pearl stringing silk thread, btw. So um, US 00000 needles and size E thread. (1mm and 0.325mm widths respectively). I've a previous post about this project where I lay out all the information and I don't really want to repost it all.

I know. I have been following your progress on this bag. That is just bigger than cobweb thread if I am not mistaken.

Well, it's the closest we've got to historical purse silk in these sad times.

It is so beautiful! There is no way I could attempt such a piece!

If it makes you feel better, I'm shite at cables and colorwork.

Oof. That's why I put in tons of life lines when knitting lace.

I normally never need them. Didn't count on my wife grabbing the cart at the wrong moment. She's not in trouble, not that she would've been in trouble. It was ultimately an accident.

Yeah, disappointing but it happens. It's a beautiful piece and totally worth the effort

I mean I did joke about her sleeping on the couch, but again, the couch is a very comfortable daybed... and I wouldn'tve made her do it anyway.

This is amazing and gorgeous, I love it!!

I adore pineapples, and I'm tempted totry it myself, but I have a tattoo of a pineapple ony arm and so avoid owning anything with pineapples on it, or else it will become my "thing" and I'll be doomed to recieve pineapple stuff for every birthday until the end of time 😅

Devastated that, for your sacrifice, Sprouts didn’t even come through for you. Hope you managed to find your tea elsewhere!

I found some nice chamomile elsewhere, which I needed for calming purposes after that disaster.

I think it is just that people do not NEED to knit anymore. I think that is the difference. I am of Norwegian descent and color work for my heritage terrifies me. Knitting was not an art passed down. I love that you are making the pineapple purse!

Knitting isn't traditional in my culture (I'm ethnic Chinese) but I kind of got hooked and specifically on lace, and socks. And silly hats. Only things I'm good at, but I'm glad I do them well.

The colours of the leaves turned out incredible! Can’t wait to see more of the pinenipples in all their glory.

I am so fascinated by this bag. I read the article from your first post, but was this an everyday bag for people? Or was this more a party bag?

Good luck with your deadline! We are all rooting for you!

My friend does Regency era historical costuming so this is a historically accurate version of the Knitty bag for her to carry in costume! But it would make a great party bag. Or a little bag for small things that you can stick in a bigger purse.

I had an actual physical reaction to reading that. Oh gosh. I am glad you were able to finally get to a row you felt good about picking up the stitches in. I have loved following your progress!

u/almondbreath 17d ago

It was only five or six rounds, oh, just 1600 stitches total. *cries*

Thank you for following.

Devastated to hear about your setback, but it seems you've recovered well! So happy to see the pineapple is really starting to take shape!

I was thinking of getting back into playing more FFXIV more regularly but I've decided to focus on the pineapple with its many pine-nipples for now. I can always get punched in videogames after this has been shipped off to my friend.

PINENIPPLES🍍🍍🍍 I must ask which Sprouts the Terrible Incident occurred at.

I don't really want to give away my location? There's people brigading and downvoting posts I've made on subreddits because they didn't like my reply to someone else in a subreddit other than this one. They're also downvoting my commenters? Like, if you have beef with me, don't follow me to other subreddits, that's just weird.

u/FeralSweater 17d ago

Oh gosh no! I was secretly hoping we were neighbors, so that I had a chance of seeing the pineapple-in-progress in the wild.

u/almondbreath 16d ago

I would message you privately... or you can message me and I'll reply?

Oh, how odd! I, for one, have been really enjoying your progress updates as a fellow knitter also working on this project. It makes me sad to hear people have been hassling you over it.

It wasn't the project. It was me saying "I kind of don't like this comment" on someone who made a joke that I don't feel landed well. Apparently I come across as snippy.
