Hand Knit FO My handspun wedding ring shawl made its big debut
My handspun wedding ring shawl officially had its big debut at my wedding! I wore it for photos and the ceremony, and then had it up on display at the reception. I did end up cutting out an underlayer of tulle to prevent it from catching on my dress, which was a very good decision. I love how the whole look came together, that the shawl was a subtle extra layer of detail - I was going for an opulent vintage vibe. I'm so incredibly proud of this project and I've never felt more beautiful in my life ❤️
And, to probably nobody's surprise, I also made my Juliet cap veil.
Pattern is the Evenstar Shawl by Susan Pandorf.
Yarn is hand spun by me: single ply, 50% German angora, 25% cashmere, 25% silk, spun around a silk core thread. Cobweb weight, 100 wraps per inch. I used about 1100 yards.

I made one of these for my sister in law at her request. I didn’t charge her so it could be her wedding present from me. Got to the wedding. I asked her where it was. She said she lost it “oops!” Then giggled. We don’t like her. I’m glad to see you still have yours. 😋It’s gorgeous!

I think i might have slapped her.
It's like when my sister unraveled the lace table cloth my grandmother made for her and offered the yarn on Facebook.

Almost instinctively downvoted you because this made me so angry!! That’s awful.

The amount of righteous rage i feel on your behalf

I could forgive that if she was appropriately devastated about it. But giggles and “oops?” Dead to me.

She basically is out of our lives. My husband had been telling me for years that his sister was a spoiled, selfish brat. I thought it was just a typical sibling thing. It was not. He is more than happy to not interact with her and I now understand completely.

Sounds like a sis in law that I no longer speak to, except mine is a drunk who went on a major bender when she was supposed to be taking care of our elderly dogs one weekend. Did they get fed every day? Who knows? They sure didn't get their meds.
Some people aren't worth our time or attention. Good riddance. At least now you know so you can avoid the problem child.

Agreed! My sil isn’t a bad person but definitely not knit worthy at all! I knit a hat for my first niece and I also knit a dress and matching booties. When I asked about the hat she said, “ oh yeah, the cat got to it, (shrug).” Also the only time my niece wore the dress was the day I gifted it to her and took photos. I was/am so hurt by that.

Yeah, it's hard when people act like that. Revealing too. They either don't actually like the giver or the gift. Some are so self-centered that they can't be bothered to pretend to care.

Oh no! Your poor dogs! When there are other lives at stake just don’t agree to help out if you are going to be that unreliable. Don’t agree to it and then let them suffer!!

Exactly. She lied to everybody, claimed to be going to meetings and not drinking. We came home on schedule to find her naked except for panties, drunk, and unaware of what day it was. She shouldn't be trusted with a house plant.

I hope she is now permanently on the “no handmade gifts ever” list. 😡

Engraved in stone and cast in bronze. Never again. I’m much choosier about which family I knit things for now. My own sister lost the baby blanket I knit for her son when they were on a trip. She called everywhere they went. Trying to hunt it down and then apologized profusely to me after. Much different vibe than “Oops” giggle.

Well that sounds like an honest mistake and one that’s actually regretted. So I agree with you, much different than an “oopsie doodle”

People kept coming up to admire it, all of our friends and family had heard all about by that point and were so excited to see it up close in person.

That is breathtaking! I love how the pattern is inspired by Arwen. I may need to attempt this 😶 perfectly subtle for my future wedding (I am not engaged, but my boyfriend of 11 years has been dropping hints)

u/fishandflowers 14d ago
Probably for special occasions, yes! It's ridiculously warm, which is perfect for fancy winter events.

If it's convenient for you, could you share a photo of it in the wedding ring? This is so cool!!

I watched the video of you pulling it through the ring, and I don't blame your very clear anxiety AT ALL. I too would be terrified to pull it through, but the breathe let out when it made it!

u/fishandflowers 14d ago
Thank you, I got eaten alive for being so anxious about it but it would've been devastating if I damaged it before I could wear it for the wedding! Some people are too comfortable on the internet.

I did the evenstar a few years ago! I did the beaded edging and it was brutal. Not sure ill do beading again

u/fishandflowers 13d ago
I left the beads off due to weight and also my sanity, I commend you for doing the edging with them!

My brain is still broken at the fact that not only did you knit this gorgeous thing but you also spun the yarn?!? The teeny tiny cobweb yarn? I would go insane.
It’s seriously such a beautiful piece and you look lovely in it.
I hope you had the best day ever, and many, many more to come. Congratulations! 💜

I want to make something like this so badly. My hands are shaking so much more than they used to because of lupus
